I've got a couple, anyone else have questions today?
1) What age do I start using toothpaste on my child? I know the fluoride ones are bad, but they make fluoride free infant toothpaste. My pedi told me when she got her first tooth to just use water on the brush (she was 5 months old). She has 8 teeth now. I feel like I should be using something more than water, but is there a point?
2) Is it ok for the convertible car seat base to hang over the edge? I know the infant seat is ok with 80% on the seat, but is a convertible the same? Apparently my Jeep has really short seats, and I just don't know how I'd find one small enough if they have to be 100% on the seat. (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Graco 4ever - there is approx. 1" overhang)

I've always used the child toothpaste ever since B got his first tooth, maybe before that, I forget. We actually just started giving flouride drops too since our water doesn't have any. My pedi said she may reccomend we use adult toothpaste with him soon but she has to look into it more.

DD just had her 18 month appt at the pediatric dentist yesterday and he recommended starting fluoride toothpaste in the next few months. So far we have just been using the training toothpaste. She did get a fluoride treatment at her appointment.

On a related note, when would I bring DD to the dentist? She'll be 1 in a couple of weeks. Four teeth have grown in already and I see another four(!!!) coming in.

No answers, but a question.
What are your tips and tricks to get a three month old to swallow infant Tylenol? She hates it, but is running a low-grade temp (from her shots, I guess - a week ago?). I've tried blowing in her face, but that makes her scream and spit it out even faster. She doesn't really take a paci, either, so one of those medicine things is probably out, too.
MOOKS (or really I guess moms of talkers, lol) - how do you tell kids not to say something without stigmatizing it? For example, yesterday, DS1 told me I have a big nose. This is true. He was not saying it to be mean, just pointing out a fact. My gut reaction was to tell him not to say that to people, but he asked why (because, like I said, having a big nose is not a bad thing in his mind). I don't want him to think having a big nose is a bad thing, but I also don't want him to go around pointing out other people's physical traits they may not be especially confident about.
I think it depends on the situation. Big nose would get a different reaction than big Boobs or butt. I typically tell her that yes, I have a big nose, etc, and that everyone is different. I think she is still a little too young to understand how pointing out differences may hurt feelings. We do steer her away from pointing at ppl in public and talkino loudly about people and say that it is rude to talk about a stranger when they aren't aware.

DS went when he was 3. They don't really do much before age 3 unless there are noticeable issues.

Can I do something to help my baby crawl? He can get on his knees if he can push off my hands or something. Currently he is constantly faceplanting from sitting or pushing backwards on his tummy. He is so so frustrated and I am sick of all the whining and tears

I put M on her hands and knees and I used my left hand to support her belly. Then I'd take my right hand and slide her knee forward in a crawling motion. I'd do that a couple of times alternating knees and then move her hands forward. Just to show her she could travel and get to stuff that way. I don't know that it helped any. He'll get there eventually. Don't rush it, they're a lot more work once they can crawl! haha

I have no idea if this is the right way to approach it, but I would probably tell him that we don't talk about other people's bodies unless we are saying something nice about them (I like your haircut, for example).

Depends on the seat. Some have to be 100% on, but not others. Seats shallow enough to fit in my dad's pickup half-sized backseat included a radian and a Costco scenera. I mostly has trouble with the booster combo seats, which is where the radian was super helpful long after the scenera was outgrown.

I just asked my dentist and he said around 2-2.5 is a good time.

We went through this phase too. Frustrating but it will pass.

How do you know if the seat requires it? I read the instruction manual (up to the forward facing sections) and it didn't mention anything.

I am flying with DD on Saturday. I am planning to bring premeasured amounts of powdered formula in a formula dispenser which should be fine for the day, but we'll be at our destination for a few days. I was thinking of bringing the container of formula we have at home in my carry-on for the trip but I can't find whether a large open container of formula will be allowed. DD is almost 1 so I'd like to not have to buy any more formula ever for her, but I'm wondering if I should buy a small container of unopened formula to put in my bag. Before you laugh and wonder WTF I wouldn't just buy formula at my destination, my sister lives in East Bumblefuck Mississippi where there's no Target, and she drinks Up & Up formula. I guess we could gamble on trying another brand while we're down there; I've been replacing a bottle a day with WCM so worst case scenario, she survives on just WCM and food while we're down there.
WWYD? I think I am making this out to be more complicated than it is.
night weaning question - L is 8 1/2 months and has 2 feeds a night. I know he does not need them but I don't know how to eliminate them since he is EBF. I would like to have him night weaned by the time he is a year in 3 1/2 months. Any suggestions?
Eta - not EBF since has solids now
I would give my daughter some cuddles, give her a kiss then put her back in bed. Sometimes I would also sing one of the songs we sing her at bedtime. I kept everything b deal and as calm as possible. There was some crying and it did take a while. I think in also set a time for when she woke up. Like if she woke up before midnight I wouldn't nurse, but at 12:01 I would. Old aim for later and later times. Now even when she gets up, I won't nurse before 5 or 6 am.
I night weaned when my daughter was over a year though.

Squirt it in the back corner if her mouth and them gently put a finger under her chin so she swallows.
Yeah, just tried it. No dice, lol. Oh, well - worth a shot!

This, but specifically state using "complementing words." Give examples such as "lovely, nice, really like, etc." So it is okay to say "I really like the shape of your nose," instead of just commenting on it like it is an object Using the complementing word is important. If you can't think of a complementing word to use, you shouldn't say anything. We talk about peoples' bodies being different than toys or buildings when we comment on them. It is a tough concept for young kids to grasp at first. We just remind them that people like to hear nice things about themselves. Hmmm...I'm not feeling very eloquent in my description.

Does anyone have experience with steel cut oats for babies (7months)? L had some the other day since I was eating them too. Today... poop is not going well for him. He is straining so much and so sad. He's had like 4 or 5 diapers with just a bit of poop (plopable- don't need to spray like normal). Everything I'm reading says steel cut and oats in general should be good for pooping and not cause constipation. I've given him a bunch of apple and some water today. Oh and took a rectal temp. Anything else I can do to help him?

Wtf wtf wtf is going on with my child. She is whining CONSTANTLY about nothing. She's extra clingy. She's eating like crap. Did I mention the whining? It is making me an insane person.

I found it easiest to squirt a small amount on his cheek. It sort of rolls down and they swallow it without realizing.

Honestly, I'd go ask these people: www.car-seat.org/ because car seats are their world.

But, but, but... it's powder right? Not liquid? So there aren't rules on powders are there?

Right, but it's open food and I have no idea if they make an exception for this. Plus, they better not thinking I'm hiding cocaine in a formula container! But I wouldn't know how alike formula powder and cocaine are, I've never snorted coke off a dick before.
