So you lost on the gummy chandelier right? Did you choose a replacement? If not, have you considered a Chihuly?
I lost. He thought it was "tacky" and it was insanely expensive. He also says I'm fickle about house stuff, so I'd hate it in a year. LIES. We got a Sputnik Elliptical Chandelier from RH instead. I only like it. My heart was really in the gummy bears.
I've never heard of Chihuly, but I'll check it out!
Okay. I think I know what your DH does for a living. Is there no way he could work for 8-10 hours a day instead of 12-16? Does he have to answer to a higher up firm? Did he want to be a school teacher when he started?
QUESTIONS!
How often (if ever) do you take the subway? Who uses the car more, you or DH?
I take the subway often. Anytime I'm leaving my neighborhood during the day, but we do drive or uber to dinner at night. I used our last car more, but H is really excited about the new car so we may battle for it.
Question about your H: With crazy long hours like his, does he ever really get down time? And how is his health/stress level? My H is a workaholic but he goes to the gym and eats mostly health foods during the work week. If he has several crazy weeks in a row, though, he is a tired/bedraggled/5 o'clock-shadowed dude. Your H's hours seem similar to my H's "crazy" weeks. How does he deal?
He trains for and runs marathons. In his spare time. haha. He has run NYC 5 years in a row. Running is his sanity, and if he's had a particularly long day or week or whatever, I text his running coach and tell him to take him out. He comes back a new human.
And we eat pretty healthy. I'd say he was less stressed than a ton of my friend's spouses because he actually likes what he does.
I'm so, so late to this, but 212, is there a reason you don't want to just hire someone full-time? Maybe someone who can do nanny and housekeeping duties, so when you need a kid break you can have one, and when you want to just have fun with your kid you can do that while s/he folds your laundry? That sounds amazing to me.
I'm getting there. Maybe if we have a second. I'm just not used to help and I've never left my kid with anyone except family/friends, so I have to unclench. Also, what would I dooooooo with all that time? I mean, I'd figure it out I'm sure. It just seems, I don't know, as hard to compute as someone having a high HHI.

OK, I'm calling it. Your H is a super human. Dang! He is definitely a driven, focused guy. I love that he loves what he does and clearly works very hard. It sounds like you are incredibly supportive of him, too. Cheers to you both, and I mean that with all sincerity.

I try. But between you and me and an entire message board of strangers, fuck the marathon. It's hard to watch him walk out the door to train, but I know it's what he needs. But fuck. Sucks.
Wow, this thread really is fascinating and you seem incredibly down to earth, which is refreshing. I still have no idea what your H does, lol!
What type of stores do you shop at for furnishing the new house?
Do you plan to go back to work in the future?
We're working with a decorator (another splurge for us) because we have insanely opposite taste. The decorator is our mediator. We go where he tells us! But it runs the gamut-- some pieces are from stores you'd have heard of (RH, Pottery Barn, etc), others are in the D&D building here. Our couch is Baker, our bed is Century. Dresser from Room and Board. Stuff like that. And MM helped us find a table (someone posted and AWESOME video of the Goliath expanding table), and through the table we found stools.
I would love to go back, but change careers. Maybe go to midwifery school or become a doula or something. Something to support women.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?!
You need to get an art edumacashun, and FAST. He makes beautiful glassworks. Like WHOA.

Ok, so I read the post on page 2, Ugh, I had no idea that would make this kind of money. For what age group? Is this a charge hourly type of thing? This requires 12-16 hour days? For rich kids? grad students?
Do you feel like you have to pick up the tab for friends and family? We make more than a lot of our friends and I feel like we pick up the tab a lot - not for normal dinners out, but we will visit and bring take out and not have them pay us back. I'm glad we can do it, for the most part, but sometimes get annoyed that I feel like I "have" to. I realize this probably makes me an asshole.

Ohh, another question if you are still taking them. What do you do for yourself (like alone/me time) since your husband works crazy hours and you don't have help?

Here's one of his chandeliers
Thanks for doing a (keepin it) REAL AMA.
Oh wait, I know people with those. I totally spaced on the name. They're so cool!

There's a Chihuly exhibit at our botanic gardens (Denver) right now. It is SO cool! You should really consider his work. It's amazing stuff.
Is the gummy bear chandelier made out of real gummy bears or is it glass/some other material?
