I've been buying pull-on style pants for DS exclusively since we're going to start PTing soon. So maternity-like waisted pants. I can't get my POAS phone to cooperate to post links, but they're "pull- on jeans" and "pull-on cargo pants" from Children's Place.
I feel like these would be so much more comfortable for DS since he complains about the waistband/button on his pants but most pull on pants don't have enough waist adjustability.
DS also complains about button pants. The "pull-on jeans" at TCP adjust a little bit. But the "pull-on cargo pants" have a drawstring INSIDE the waistband that is extremely adjustable. You can pull them very tight. Here's a pic of DS's pants. They are soft, comfy, and DS loves to "look like daddy." FYI they run a little big.

I agree with OPs about prices. I see a lot that I like but it's just too expensive. I can find some cute stuff at Carter's but there's a fair amount of eyeroll-inducing stuff.
I suspect J will wear a lot of surfer clothes (e.g., Ripcurl, Oneil) b/c I come from a long line of surfers who live at the beach (including his grandma who loves to buy him clothes).

I actually haven't had an issue with boy clothing. I like Mini Boden (wish they were less expensive and had more sales) we get a lot from a couple local store by us when they have sales. They have some different and unique stuff.
We stay away from clothing with charaters on them or sayings except for some of his old school shirts he has like the one that says "College" and a reference to Tommy Boy- those are all H.
I've been wanting to order from Next Direct, too. I think it's British? I've gotten a few things on consignment and the quality is good, and it's a little bit different and not too expensive.
AmyRI DS also loves orange. Target has a ton of cute orange stuff right now. I just got this orange waffle-knit shirt and striped orange/gray t-shirt.
Out Target is so weird. There is like one measly rack for boy toddler clothes and there is barely anything on it. Then there is 2 racks of baby stuff then 800 racks of girls clothes. It annoys me so much.

Oh those are good. Do you know anything about the weight of the shirts? Like if they are heavier like the gap play favorites, or thinner like the ON ones?

Despite being 2 levels, the Merrifield one is the same way. It's so poorly organized too.

I would guess they're a little heavier, based on the pieces I have. But I have no idea how old the stuff I have is, just that it appears to have held up well enough to make it to consignment!

4T! Whoa! I think I might have some of those at home but I haven't pulled them out yet because they are 2T which still falls off DS. If they have the drawstring maybe they would be ok. Would tying them make it a pain to get on and off for diaper changes?
For people actively shopping for boys 12+ months - if you're looking for better brands at cheaper prices, try ThredUp. I got quite a bit of stuff on there recently for reasonable prices. I can do better if I consignment shop, but lately I have had zero time or motivation to shop consignment sales and go to a million stores. They often run promo codes (and I think you can get 40% off your first order for signing up to their email list, and if you want a referral link I can give you one and you'll get a $10 credit). I've been really happy with everything I ordered and I like the variety they have.
I also haven't read through the first two pages of replies, but did anyone mention Kitestrings for boys' clothing? I love them but they are super expensive, IMO. I try to grab them on clearance at the outlets, but still. Same for Vineyard Vines :-)

I am sure this has all been covered but I hate how girl clothing sections are huge and boys have like two racks. Kohls, I am looking at you. My DS really prefers elastic waisted pants, but he is tall and skinny and most sizes that are long enough, the waist is giant. Same with jeans, but at least I buy gap slim fit jeans. So, more elastic waisted pants. More choices for dressy clothes (for photos, etc).
FTR, I do like boy clothes, I just find I have to be pickier and dig a little harder.
With the recent staining epidemic in this house, though, I think I'm going to have to just buy a shitton of cheap Target t-shirts for daycare and call it a day. I suck at stain removal apparently.
THe staining and trashing of clothes only gets worse as they get older too. I recommend embracing the Target, Walmart, Meijer and Kohls stuff now.

I actually like the simplicity associated with dressing a boy. Need to look nice? Simple collared shirt, chino pants, socks, brown shoes, brown belt, done. Girls need a dress, maybe a sweater, tights, matching shoes. I know you can make things simple for girls but it seems to take more thought than it does for a boy. My boys wear solid shirts and solid pants/shorts with brown shoes so virtually no matching is required and they still look decent.
@vicmo - have you seen these animal sweaters?? despite detouring through the clothing before every grocery trip i have somehow missed these gems. i need to the red one! and i kind of want the reindeer for our hipster-ish christmas party. that could be dressed up so well.
Another silly question for y'all. When do you put your kids in these cute clothes if not for daycare? Weekends only?
DS wears nice clothes every day, even to daycare. I have SHOUT for a reason Today he wore gray chinos and a nautical inspired striped colored block long sleeve T.

Am I doing this wrong? I love boy clothes. Granted, I have limited experience, but there were a couple of Carter's lines this summer that I loved- yellow submarine for one! I should have bought the sleeper in multiple sizes. DS also wears a lot of plaid rompers and cotton rompers, and they might only have a small logo if any. There were some shark things as well, which I much prefer to frogs, puppies and monkeys. I have a lot of bold colors for him too.
I also bought a lot of the paddington bear stuff at gap when it went on sale/clearance. And I have a couple of sweaters I'm dying to put him in! One has elbow patches, and cost me $1.50 on a FB sale page.
Sure, there is a lot of hideous stuff, but there is a lot of hideous girl stuff too. ::shrugs::

I sent DS to daycare in nice clothes up until this summer. He started demanding to pick his own clothing, which is a mix of graphic tees and mesh shorts. Boo. Nice clothes are now collecting dust in the closet since he refuses to wear them unless I bribe him for a special occasion or something.
It is cracking me up that your 3 yo is so particular about his clothing!
I didn't read all the responses yet, but we have lots of handmedowns and some cute boy cardigans, jackets, etc- DH and I both noted how they were probably so expensive when bought new. Never would have been able to get them ourselves.
Dd is 5 and we've survived on lots of leggings and jegging type pants- what do boys do? Obvs. For babies they will still all be elastic waists, but real jeans or pants with the adjustable waist have never cut it for us for long.

This is why we own no graphic tees or mesh shorts Well, that is not true. We do have mesh shorts, but DS knows they are for soccer only lol.
