We got a full on crotch shot, and the tech asked us if we could see it. We told her we could see something, but we had no idea what it was. She then wrote Baby Girl on the screen.

The tech and the Dr weren't even in agreement at first. She had to convince him there was a penis there and he agreed after some discussion. So no, we certainly couldn't tell.
With my daughter, yes it was clear as day, no penis with three lines.
My son....there was a lump but there were also three lines. My Dr. said Boy but I looked at it feeling not 100%. I went in for a 3D scan at 27 weeks and it was definitely a little boy in there.

She told us to close our eyes if we didn't want to know when she got to that area. We didn't want to know, so I have no idea if it would have been obvious.
No. I never knew what the heck we were looking at. I just remember the doctor counting her fingers and toes for me once and I was like "little fingers and toes!" And she often didn't want to move so even the doctors and techs had a hard time seeing what they needed to.
We wanted to find out with our first two, both girls. I don't remember if we knew what to look for with our first, but with our second we saw the three lines and knew it was a girl before the tech told us so. We were team green with our third, and the tech never even had to tell us to look away even though he later said it was clear as day, so I guess after two girls we didn't know what a penis would even look like. I'm actually a little bummed I never got to see it on an ultrasound, although of course now I see it every day. lol.
The first time I just had one ultrasound and she turned off our monitor when she got to that part of the scan.
With DS, I had three ultrasounds thanks to low lying placenta. The second one I wasn't looking when she put the wand on and my H's eyes got really big at that first shot. So I wonder if he saw it was a boy.
The third ultrasound I felt really dizzy from laying on my back and had to be on my side most of the ultrasound. So I only saw him once and then I couldn't see the rest of the time. I was 30 weeks by then and nervous to look anyway and accidentally see something!

We were team green the first time. I don't remember the details as far as looking away. Maybe the tech looked for that first then showed us the screen? I know my chart said something along the lines of anatomy normal. I did not see anything the rest of the scan that gave me a hint either way. It was a girl.
Second time around we found out. Tech asked if we wanted to know and then put up a reveling shot. She asked if we knew and it took me a moment to process it all and respond, but I knew it was a boy. DH was not what he was looking at at first.
Possibly flameful: even when they point things out on USs I can't always tell what it is. Seriously, beyond skull, spine, body in fairly useless at seeing anything.
