That is crazy. My L&D & prenatal care only cost me 500.00 OOP. You are awesome for doing this. How is baby brother?
Baby Brother looks wonderful in the pictures we've seen lately. He and B-mom are staying with Aunt A, so he's clean and happy. And looking more and more like F every day. It's amazing to look at him and see my baby boy all over again (heart)
I am so glad he's doing well. I think about him all the time.

I'm so sorry that you've been put in this position Jermys but I am so glad that you are able to help her out. You go so far above and beyond that it is an inspiration.

We're all hoping for that outcome, actually (all meaning me, her mom, and her sisters). I don't know if they can do it right afterwards or if they have to wait until she's healed.

Oh good. They probably have to wait until her uterus is back to normal but hopefully she can schedule the appt right when she's there.

Usually they can be placed at the same time, but I'm not sure since she's farther along than an average D&C.
You are good people. It makes me sad, if its this much WITH insurance I can't imagine how much it is without, and the people without insurance are most likely the ones least likely to have the funds to pay.

Am I to understand this is her 3rd child? You adopted 2, and now she is pregnant again? Isn't birth control free now? I guess I'm not really understanding why she keeps getting pregnant when she obviously does not want children, and there are methods of birth control readily available to her?
Is putting this child up for adoption also not an option? Why an abortion for this one? And 16 weeks is well into the second trimester, which makes me really sad.
Can she have a tubal after this pregnancy so it's no longer an issue? Be pro-life, be pro-choice...But using abortions as birth control is just gross. *puts on flame-retardant suit and waits*

I assume this really depends on your insurance coverage. My old insurance covers both OB/L&D and abortion 100%, though you don't see abortion listed in the services brochure. I think they just consider abortion to be an OB expense.
On the flip side my sister paid like 3k after insurance to have a baby, so I'm going to assume if she had a termination there would be some cost associated too. If the person in the OP is paying $570 for an abortion with her insurance, I highly doubt L&D would be less than that (but given politics, who knows I guess).
In my experience, if a plan covers abortion it's covered the same as any other non-preventive service which that means it can apply to your copay, deductible, and/or out of pocket amounts. So then it just depends what your amounts are and what you've already met. So if you've got a huge deductible, for example, and haven't met any or much of that it can be quite pricey. Of course some awesome plans just cover all of that at 100%, but sadly it seems plans that good are getting harder to find.
I thought Planned Parenthood offered them on a sliding scale of what you can afford?
They do. But for an in-clinic abortion at that many weeks, even if you make something like $17k/year, you're still (potentially) looking at up to $700/800 or so.
I know way too much about this, it seems.
None of the PPFA clinics I've worked with cover abortions on a sliding scale. I'm sure there are some that do, but it's likely in conjunction with some other specific funding being done to do so, it's not PPFA-wide.
Around me you can maybe get a small discount (<$100) by working with an abortion fund, but the rates are the same for everyone regardless of income. Insurance companies get $300+ discounts, but if you're coming in with your own money you likely get nothing at most clinics

Jermys, you're so awesome for everything you do.
Deductibles are definitely an issue, but some clinics will only use insurance for a portion of the procedure ie everything except the abortion even if your insurance covers it. It's actually really common the later you get for clinics to either only accept insurance for part of it or to not take insurance at all.

Some PP clinics are sliding scale. Planned Parenthood in my town doesn't do sliding scale but they DO have funds to help out. I was in the first tri when I got mine and looking at $450 but with the help of funding I left paying $250 I think? It was still a ton of money for me (I was unemployed but had a good savings) so I can't imagine how you could make it work if you had absolutely no extra money. Jerm you are a total doll for offering your 'friends' assistance and looking in to options for her.
I believe the IUD can be put in at the same time, but it could be different for that situation. I really hope that's an option for her or she can find something else that will work.
Why is she not taking advantage of free birth control? Why should her insurance (undoubtedly free for her...at the cost of tax payers) pay for an abortion just because she is clearly irresponsible? Pro choice or pro life doesn't even matter at this point. Her history proves her to be grossly irresponsible but yet everyone here believes she should just be provided with free services. How about some condoms?? They're way cheaper!

I think this statement applies to 99% of what you say on this board. Kindly shut your pie hole.

I shouldn't respond, but I will. She is parenting her second child and my husband and I are parenting her firstborn. This is her first and hopefully last abortion. Parenting is difficult under the best circumstances. It's unfathomably harder when you are dealing with developmental delays, poverty, and an abusive/coercive relationship.
Adoption is a viable alternative to parenting. Abortion is a viable alternative to unwanted pregnancy.
And to quote Toledo, "Shut the fuuuuuuuck up, hairbow."

OMG, no one has ever thought of this!
Birth control fails, Einstein. Case in point, my firstborn.

You're good people @jermys. I paid for a co-worker's abortion 10 years ago, and it was $800. She never could have come up with on her own making minimum wage. It's crazy.
DD1's birth mom had 3 abortions before she had her, I have always wondered why she chose to have J. This has me wondering if money was a factor.

Screw her "history". You don't know her personally, this may have been an irresponsible action, this may have been a birth control failure and either way she is still allowed the right to the service if she needs it.

Thanks for explaining the situation. I think what you're doing is completely selfless. But I disagree with you on your last point. Adoption is also a perfectly viable alternative to an unwanted pregnancy. Everyone is entitled to feel how they want to, obviously. But I personally feel like ending a life just because you don't want to have to deal with the goings on of being pregnant, is not okay. But I really do wish all of you the best of luck.

Then feel free to never end a pregnancy. But pregnancy is incredibly hard on a woman's body, and adoption is incredibly hard emotionally and mentally. Adoption is not for every woman, and choosing adoption can be impossible to do twice.
