Heck yes! It makes me feel less guilty about the things I splurge on. Those items that I eye, that never seem to drop in price when I want them. Or items I'm very specific about when it comes to color. It's also another way to save, and is "green".
Today he's wearing a pair of practically brand new Sperry's that I got for something like $10 shipped on Ebay a couple weeks ago. A day or two before that he was in flannel lined Gap khakis that I bought for $3 from a community consignment sale.
This year I splurged and bought him a Patagonia fleece for $59 because I couldn't find one in a solid color, used. But just yesterday I snagged a 2T (same fleece) for next year, for $13!
I learn toward some brands more than others, when it comes to used. At the semi-annual community consignment sale I have walked away with a Burberry polo every time I've been. $5-8! I also score Hanna Andersson jammies for less than $10.
Group FB swap sites for specific brands are great. I get some Mini Boden items that way, and also sell them on that platform.
We buy pretty much all his clothes from Once Upon a Child. Last time we were there, H asked me at what age Fred would start freaking out about us buying him used clothes. I figure when we reach that point I just won't take him shopping with me anymore.

Yep. Dd has on a thrifted sweater and thrifted ( brand new) pink loafers on right now.
I don't do consignment much, because the prices usually even out to super on sale items. I am still sad at the loss of the best thrift store ever when we moved. That store was magic. I would go in looking for something specific and find it almost very time. It also had a basement full of kids clothes. Craziness. It was not an attractive store to look at, but iI never had any bad incidents!
ETA: So I thrifted pretty much all of mine and DDs' outfits in this pic. All in , think I spent $20.
One of my favorite things to do is go shopping at Goodwill. We have an awesome one really close to me that I've bought Marc Jacobs, Chloe, ton of Jcrew, Citizens for Humanity, etc.
Their boys section kind of sucks but I have found some decent stuff occasionally.
I have found kids consignment places to have a shit selection for boys stuff. I do an awesome job shopping sales so most of my kids stuff is new.
If I had a girl though, it would be a different story. So many cute higher end stuff can be found for little money.
I have to admit though that I don't dress the boys in shirts with writing or cartoon characters or sweat pants. If I did, I would never need to buy anything new. I'm picky.
As far as judging I think parents do it more than kids. When DD1 was two a lady stopped me to say "That's a gymboree shirt, right? My daughter wore that LAST year" I said that I had gotten it on clearance to use later on and she replied that she bought her daughter the entire Gymboree collection as soon as it comes out. Good for you lady. I buy on sale.
No. I can get great deals at regular stores. I've gotten stuff from old navy for as low as .47 for long sleeved tshirts.
Same here. So while I don't go to Goodwill, my dad does, and he finds DS a ton of great stuff. More power to him. He found DS a track jacket that works great in this cold weather. I really do not like the musty smell of the STORE. The clothes are fine, but I always get sneezy after I go in there. It's just a ME thing. I really don't have a problem with 2nd-hand clothes. DS wears them all the time.

Oh GROSS.
I think buying ahead (or using hand me downs) is more fun because then he/she doesn't have all of the exact same stuff as their peers each season.
I used to all the time, but not anymore. Not only could I not find cute boy stuff but I didn't think the price was worth it. I'd rather spend a couple more dollars and buy what I want.

Yep. In August my favorite thrift store has a back to school sale and children's clothing is four for a dollar and the juniors stuff is $0.50. They have a facebook page and promote all their sales. All coats $1? I'm there!
The thrift stores near me are not awesome. But I'll give it a shot to find as much as I can. I'll have to start checking EBay. I suspect I'll shop sales too.
For now I have so.many.clothes people have given me.
Yes I shop at consignment stores. If you are a really good bargain hunter you can probably get new clothes for the same price as the consignment stores but I don't have the energy or desire to try that hard.

I am not opposed to thrift stores at all. But our local Goodwill thinks its a department store and charges like it. I get better deals at Kohl's, Target, and Marshal's.

They must've all seen that episode of The Torklesons where Dorothy Jane gets a homecoming dress at Goodwill and the most popular girl in school recognizes it because she gave it away.

Well to be fair, so does this braggy asshole. Gymboree is notorious for 40% off plus 20% coupon stack the first week a line is out.
I buy a lot at the 2x a year consignment sale and a couple local consignment stores. Our OUAC is more miss than hit though. A lot of stuff isn't good quality and faded/pilled.
I did score a Lily Pulitzer winter coat there for $8, I told DH I didn't care it was the next size up, it was coming with me.

I don't have kids yet, but absolutely, I fully intend to.
I love thrift stores and buy clothes for myself there frequently; I think I'm pretty good at finding all the awesome stuff that's buried in there. It is like a hobby to me. And also how I can afford and satisfy my shopping habit, lol.
Also...several of the thrift stores in our area seem to get regular bulk donations from Target, so there is often brand new, fairly current stuff up for grabs (for like a quarter of the retail price, woohoo).
Occasionally but most of the consignment places near us are overpriced. I like to reuse things but I have a hard time buying something used for the same price (or close to it) the item is new.
I've gotten a couple decent things at the Goodwill near us (and fwiw, I find a ton of great stuff for ME.), but yes-- the consignment stores are terrible. I'd rather shop sales at Old Navy and Target than buy used Janie and Jack from a consignment. I've sold a bunch of stuff at one of them, but I'd rather cash out then spend the money at the store.
In fact, this weekend, I cashed out almost $75 and will turn around and spend it next weekend on Black Friday sales.
I will say that a good 50 percent, if not more, of clare's wardrobe is hand me downs from a friend of mine. She has a daughter Henry's age and a younger son. We are just basically swapping clothes at this point.
