I was planning on making the pumpkin gooey butter cake, but my sister just told me (we are hosting down here), that she has ordered and paid for a pumpkin pie already. I think she knows I like making the gooey butter cake. Anyway, would you still make it?
Ha! She just texted me back saying she doesn't think we need the pumpkin cake too. lol Honestly, she is right but I prefer the cake, it is not as pumpkin rich.

Do it anyway!!
I recently had this issue with my dad. I told him I would make creamed corn and bring it. He said he already bought the ingredients, so I didn't need to. But his creamed corn is canned and mixed with saltines and GROSS.
We have six people and there is at least one pie, a tray of mini desserts, and cookies/biscotti. Bring the cake!
DH always says it's too many desserts. I need choices and leftovers.
Word. We'll have 11 (depending on how the weather shakes out, could be just DH and myself) and we'll have pumpkin pie, salted caramel apple pie bars, spice cookies, and nutella fudge. Possibly more bc my MIL loves to just show up with extra dessert.

Can you share the salted caramel apple pie bar recipe? Yum!
I think that if she made the pie, I wouldn't bring extra. Because it would be sad if nobody ate her pie that she made. But since its not homemade, I would bring the cake.
IDK. Maybe not. I'm pretty sensitive to doing what hosts request.

This is a good point.
"I know you said not to bring this, but I like it much more than what you are serving so I brought it anyway" is maybe a tad insensitive, lol.
Yeah. One year my ILs brought dessert that I didn't request, and the pies I had made and was excited about got uneaten. I know it probably seems silly, but I was so hurt.
That the sister didn't labor over the pumpkin pie maybe changes my perspective a little, but still, I tend to prefer doing what the host asks and leaving it at that.

Yes, it is. I said I'd still bring it. In reality, I'd probably pout (only to my H) and not take it if specifically asked not to. If I did take it, I'd be sure to eat a piece of her pie and compliment her on it, too.
ETA: Reading fail! You're hosting? Make the cake! (But eat a slice of pie, too!)
Not Cleo, but I always use the Paula Deen pumpkin gooey butter cake recipe from Food Network. It's awesome and has flavor variation suggestions. Hello peanut butter gooey butter cake!
Also, as much as I love PGBC, since your sister already has a pie and you talked about it and she asked you not to bring the cake, I'd make another dessert. Sorry!

Go ahead and make it. It's your house and when it comes to holidays I think it's good to have desserts that are traditional to your family and that you like. I'm always bummed when we go somewhere and they don't have pecan pie because that's my favorite on Thanksgiving. Bring on the gooey cake.
