OK, people are REALLY PISSING ME OFF that they keep bringing my dad (a police officer) into the discussion on my FB posts. LIKE REALLY FUCKING PISSED OFF.
Ugh, I'm pissed off for you. I've been in similar situations because my husband was in the military for 20 years- sometimes people just assume that he and I share their bigoted thoughts about Muslim/Middle Eastern/brown/nonChristian people because of it, or they take it upon themselves to get offended by something on his behalf or lecture me about how insulting something is to my husband. It's arrogant and presumptuous. I just want to scream at them not to presume to know how he feels about anything, that he's perfectly capable of forming his own beliefs and expressing his own thoughts and doesn't need a self-appointed white knight, and to stop appropriating his experience for their own jackass purposes.
You know what I do when my kids throw a temper tantrum? Recognize that they are human beings and empathize with their feelings. Then I try to find the root cause of the temper tantrum and fix the real problem so I can prevent future problems. Two different approaches I guess.
Anyone know how many people are protesting in other cities across the U.S? Canadian news is lacking. I hope this brings change.
I'm watching the news in Providence. A hundred people just went onto I-95 to try and block traffic and have a sit-in.
so. NOT. a. good. idea. A bad idea at any time, but even worse late at night, when people are coming back from the bars or driving too fast to hurry somewhere else for Thanksgiving.
Hopefully the police manage to get them off the highway before someone gets killed.

Yeah, I'm reading that the protesters in Denver are trying to block I25.
I'm all for protesting, but that's just suicide. Interstate drivers give no fucks.

Oh, gosh no, that's a terrible idea. I'm guessing they would be coming up Broadway or Colfax to do it? Not with all that 6th Ave construction making it a hazardous area to drive already. Block Colfax or something more reasonable.

They're on West Colfax above I-25, right by Mile High.

They're on Colfax. The cops stopped them from going further.
I dot get ferguson pd. Seems like the protests are peaceful yet protestors are being told if they don't get In their cars they will be arrested for "unlawful assembly." Wtf? I mean I know everything the ferguson pd does makes no sense but why can't the national guard step in and tell the ferguson pd that they are in the wrong at least on their position that peaceful protests are unlawful?
here's question, I made it through some of the transcripts but not all of it. did they interview the friend MB was with? Because I believe that DW believes that is what happened or has told the story enough times for it to sound convincing. I just have a hard time understanding why someone would be so aggressive with a cop and basically commit suicide like that by taunting him and charging him if so.
"But where Wilson's account presents Brown as completely irrational and borderline suicidal, Johnson's account is more recognizable. It isn't a blameless, kindly beat cop who gets set upon by a rampaging Michael Brown. And nor is it a blameless, kindly Michael Brown who gets set upon by a cold-blooded murderer with a badge.
It's a cop who feels provoked by these two young black men who won't get out of the street, and who tries to teach them a lesson, to put them in their place. His actions escalate the situation, and then the adrenaline floods, and then there's a struggle, and the situation escalates, and escalates, and escalates, and then Darren Wilson shoots Michael Brown and Michael Brown dies.
Indeed, we might never get to the truth of what happened in those two minutes on August. But the point of a trial would have been to get us closer. We would have found out if everything we thought we knew about Brown was wrong, or if Wilson's story was flawed in important ways, or if key witnesses completely broke under pressure. We would have heard real cross-examination. We would have seen the strongest case that could be mounted by both the prosecution and the defense. But now we're not going to get that chance. We're just left with these Rashomon-like testimonies, a dead 18-year-old, and a shattered family."

Last night Oakland protestors brought 580 to a standstill. But I don't think that was even the first time this year.
Just had the "but there is a black president" talk with coworker, now I'm trying not to show how furious I am because I work in close contact with this person everyday. I didn't think it would come to this. And then he's all "I'm glad we can have these talks and just walk away," and I want to just scream.
We had an incident between a car and some protestors this afternoon in Mpls. As best as I have gathered, the car started honking at folks in the street. People didn't move. Car drove over someone's leg. People jumped on car.
Driver is currently with the police. There is video of the incident.
I just got into a fb fight about this. MIKE BROWN BROKE THE LAW!!!
I was like, some white driver plowed through a crowd, injuring one lady and wasn't arrested. He broke the law and wasn't shot. But, being white had nothing to do with it.
I know, and I'm sure some people are going to go back to the "they were asking for it," stuff. Umm, pretty sure the first amendment gives us the right to "peaceful assembly." The first amendment says nothing about "as long as they stay on the sidewalk."
Can I ask a question - this came up in conversation and I had to let it go with a, "I'm not saying you're lying, but I have no idea what you're talking about and I've been following the news on this."
I know that there have been people shot in Ferguson during the time period of the protests. I remember one story that specifically said it wasn't clear if there was any connection to the protests. There's the winner the other day who shot herself in the face. I think I remember one other...in front of a church maybe?
Were any of those DURING the protests? Like - in the crowd? Shots fired between protesters/anti-protestors/people trying to get rioters to cool their shit? This conversation was pre GJ announcement, so not referring to the most recent round where there were apparently a lot of shots fired, but nobody actually hit.
