All good points you've cited, but the global mods are not a part of this. Banning can only be done by the admins--the globs are not pushing anyone around.
IIRC the admins are the folks who created this particular forum and so they were not elected.
Correct. Ellie created the forum. y4m was made an admin by ellie because y4m is her friend.
I kind of see where you are coming from... without a lot of other opposing viewpoints being posted, when she posts her drivel and we pile on her... I could see from the outside, it could look like we are a bunch of "groupthinkers"...
y4m used to be a regular poster. She's not looking at us from the outside.
OH, I know that. I meant we might look like a bunch of "groupthinkers" to people who are new and don't know our "history". Ergo, if they have opposing views they may shy away when they see a Lys pile on and don't know that she's really just Megyn Kelly or Sean Hannity in disguise.

Okay so this might get me kicked off Liberal Island, but I do think that thanks to liberals outnumbering conservatives on this board, the onus ends up being on conservatives to engage, offer supporting evidence for their opinions, etc. whereas liberals can get away with just posting their thoughts and moving on without coming back to GBCN and finding 18 notifications that they've been quoted. And I think that's unfair, and I'm sensing some of that in this thread with some posts. So in that respect, I get why conservatives don't post as much. And I do try and be cognizant of this when I post liberal things (I really do, even though I know I fail a lot!).
I'm just mentioning this because of the common argument that liberals here want more conservatives to post well-reasoned opinions, when I am pretty sure we don't say that to liberals, nor would we tolerate conservatives saying that to/about us. I mean, there are liberal opinions too that aren't well-reasoned.
I'm also just mentioning this because it's a multi-pager already and it's the airing of the grievances and I know we've discussed this a million times so I'm just doing my part.
But back to Lys - she still sucks but I still don't support banning her. If anything, I'd support her changing her name since occasionally there is confusion between her and lyssbobiss, Command, B613, and lyssbobiss had her name first.
If you have someone blocked, the while point is to ignore them. If you can't do this, I agree that blocking is not for you. But that doesn't make the solution banning them because you can't actually handle blocking.
And Lauren, I could NEVER quit you. Or Nugget for that matter. Now stop guessing.
IF it were only a handful of people bothered by lys I would agree. However, the majority of the board has an issue with her to one degree or another.
Not to mention the fact that trolls should be banned. Lys is a troll.
I think this is an overstatement. There are several posters who truly hate her. There are many who find her obnoxious but not bannable. I'm sure there is a large portion of this board who just don't give a shit. Banning is a big deal, imo. Unless a vote is taken, I don't know how to reflect just how many people want her banned. But I don't think just because someone has an issue with her is reason enough to ban her. I also don't think her behavior really meets the TOS criteria for a troll.
I'm not defending Lys. I'm just extremely cautious on banning.
- Lys shouldn't be banned because of her views. She should be banned because she meets the definition of an Internet troll.
- She has been doing the same troll schtick for years and doesn't change because she enjoys being this persona here.
- Despite what the global mods say, THIS IS OUR BOARD. We have a RIGHT to dictate the nature of the board WE CREATED, CURATED, and CULTIVATED over the past 7 (seven!!) years.
- We have left one board host because they were dicks, and we can do it again if need be. I'm not saying we should all jump ship but I don't like feeling that I'm being pushed around by a small group of unelected global mods. We left the nest because they had ZERO respect for the community and friendships we had built and came here thinking things would be different. So far it is dramatically better but this iron fisty approach is nonsense.
- I do think we should vote on Lys. It will be symbolic only but I think the symbolism is needed to send a message both to Lys and the global mods.
Groupthink:
There is groupthink here. I've been in it and I've been out of it and you feel it when you are out of it. But I don't think this is a bad thing. Rather this is just the nature of long term group dynamics. Using it as a slur against the group is silly and inappropriate. Every other long term board here has shades of groupthink. It's natural and normal.
You're saying this like the board is clearly in agreement in opposition to the global mods, when I don't get any such impression.

I'm cautious of banning, too. We've been here how many years and this is the first time I've actively moved to ban a poster that wasn't obvious chinese spam.

Nope. Not at all. Not even in the slightest. I don't even know what the board is thinking. Which is why I said we should vote on Lys. This is just my opinion. Just pointing it out that we can leave if we want to. I don't know if we want to. I don't even know if I want to. I just want the admins to know that nothing is forever and to respect the community because the community does have a history of migrating.

Well, if we're going to take a vote on this, we now have two new political parties here - the Ban-Lys Party and the Don't-Ban-Lys Party. But we're going to need better party names and animal symbols and bumper stickers.

In this two party system, I am an independent.
I agree with the strict adherence to the TOS and First Amendment philosophy of the Ban-Lys party, but Lys is a terrible poster child for their movement, so they don't have my support.
Well, it sounds like banning just doesn't happen here. And since it never really has - outside of the obvious spambots - I think that's consistent. If people want a change, it's going to need to be a forum wide thing, though, and I just don't know that there's support for that.
I just am uncomfortable with moving to banning, or anything resembling more heavy moderation for a few reasons. One, that has always been the common practice around here, and two, that's a lot of extra work for the mods/admin that I don't think they really signed up for.

Well, I'm thinking the Ban-Lys-Party is an otter.
And of course the Don't-Ban-Lys-Party is a seal.
Oh and anyone else of the independent camp can be Honeybadgers...
I mostly just think it's funny that MM is ruled with an iron fist, and the attitude everywhere else is "eh, let it go." Last I checked, bringing up a topic posted by someone else wasn't against the TOS, either.
MM is ruled with an iron fist? Really? I can't say that I have ever noticed it.
I would, however, be on board with a banning of people who out personal information. I've always felt like that was a big rule around here.
Is there a reason that person wasn't banned? ETA: I mean, beyond the lack of banning in general, was there a stated reason? It seems like personal information would fall into that category and be fairly cut and dried.
I sort of think of lys as a troll. I have no problem with opposing views; but lys has a terrible habit of dropping incredibly inflammatory bombs and then never returning to engage in actual discussion. It tends to derail otherwise interesting posts, because it riles everyone up fruitlessly.
Haven't caught up on that whole string, but her comment after which Pixy wrote that she moved to have her banned, really appears to be a list of dissenting opinions shared by many in the conservative party.
And I do think we can be group thinky around here. Me part of it, admittedly. And unwelcoming to dissenting opinions.
I'm not sure about any racist stuff Lys has posted.
No. It would be symbolic only. A message to the admins and to lys.
I don't think lys gives a fuck what we vote on. Plus don't forget that she is also an active poster on MM, too.
Eh. Lys is a practical numbers lady. If she saw that 75% of CEP didn't want her to participate here, I think she would get the message that she either needs to clean up her game or not participate any longer.
