I would definitely consider PA and NJ, and everything north of them, to be the northeast. I live in southeast pa, if that boosts my authority on this at all.
This. If you asked me states, I'd say MA, VT, CT maybe NY. But that's just because I don't know geography. I'm sure there are more, but I just think of them as a monolithic block of cold liberal places with good colleges.

When I was growing up in the Midwest I would have considered it to be pretty much everything from Virginia on up, more or less, but the "stereotypical" cities would have been Philly, NYC, Boston. I had never heard the term mid-atlantic states until I moved here. I'm in Philly now, and we definitely lump ourselves more with NE states than mid-atlantic.
