If you asked me states, I'd say MA, VT, CT maybe NY. But that's just because I don't know geography. I'm sure there are more, but I just think of them as a monolithic block of cold liberal places with good colleges.
Everything above MD. I'm originally from MD and I remember thinking we were northerners because the south didn't claim us, then I learned later that the north (everyone above us) didn't claim us either haha. But after reading all the pp's, I have no idea where north begins now.

Ok, for the people that are claiming that PA & NJ are mid-atlantic - I agree. But I don't think northeast and mid-atlantic are mutually exclusive for those two states, just like new england and north east isn't mutually exclusive for Massachusetts.
I think you can classify PA & NJ as both mid-atlantic and Northeast.
If something is not relevant to my life, I don't pay attention to it. LOL.
I just think its funny that insom didn't include all of the states that bordered Mass in her assessment of the northeast. I dont' think she included RI, for example. If RI isn't northeast, what is it? we are small but mighty here! We have the same amount of senators as you do in CA, but we probably have just a fraction of the population.
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
We live in the South, so pretty much anything north of Virginia is in the Northeast. West Virginia is like no-man's land (part South, part mid-Atlantic, part Midwest).

NJ, NY, and New England. You MIGHT be able to convince me that Philadelphia is a city in the northeast, but you will never get me to agree that PA is northeast.
Pennsylvania and everything directly East and North.
This, although I feel like some in PA have always wanted to be part of the south.
ha! I spent some time in VA and got a lot of grief for being a Yankee. PA is big though and I will definitely agree that there are parts in the middle that are known as Pennsyltucky for a reason.
But Pittsburgh =/= Northeast. I would agree with PP that Philly could go with the rest of the NE.
Obviously since Pgh is less than 45minutes from the Ohio border it's more like the midwest, but you can't really split up a state. I grew up closer to Philly so it seems ridic to me to consider PA a midwest state when going to the beach was a day trip and NYC, DC, Baltimore were all reasonable drives for school field trips.

You can all shame me for this, but, if you gave me a blank map of the Northeast, I can guarantee you that I could not fill in all the states correctly.

Another clueless Cali person signing in. I always figured the northeast was pretty much New England, NY,NJ, and PA. Hubs, who is from the northeast ( Philly) agrees. I also would mess up getting these tiny strangely shaped states in a map correctly.
