The region comprises nine states: the New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont; and the Mid-Atlantic states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.[1] The Census Bureau regions are "widely used...for data collection and analysis."[2][3][4] Other definitions agree.[5] The Uniform Crime Reports of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)[6] and the National Energy Modeling System both use the Census definitions of the Northeast.[7] Gale's almanac of associations and regional, state, and local organizations also takes the same nine states as comprising the Northeast.[8]
This. And PA is NOT the Midwest. This is ridiculous. I am from MN and have lived in the northeast (MA, upstate NY, and NJ 2 miles from NYC) for over 10 years. Too many people from the coasts seem to think that the Midwest runs from the NYC border to the California border and it's insulting.
ETA: To clarify, those are the places I've lived, not how I define the northeast. But they all are in the northeast.

haha. Seriously! Although I'm a WA native living in MN. The sensitivity to "fly over country" is kind of funny. I actually like that the rest of the country doesn't realize how awesome the Twin Cities are. STAY OUT! I FOUND THE BEST KEPT SECRET THERE IS!!! haha.
I remember in school learning that the Mason-Dixon line was the divider of the south and the northeast. This would also include NJ in the northeast, but not DE. There is no way we're midwest! Ha!
