It's beautiful. Very accepting of the gay/ transgender community. Easy access to NYC, Philly, etc. Amazing schools Great people. We've been here 2.5 years and I really love it!
Portland, Maine is a great combo of affordability, charm, and down to earth people with hopping restaurant, art, and music scenes. Also, if you care about sustainability - like farm to fork food, net zero housing, and repurposing stuff - there is a LOT going on here.
Half way between Philly and Princeton. I can get to Manhattan, the beach, the mountains in under 2 hours. I live in a place with a great schools, a small town vibe and really good restaurants.
The weather, hands down. You cannot beat So Cal weather.
I also love being close to the beach, desert and mountains.
We are practically right in between LA and San Diego, so I love that we can go to both places regularly.
For my specific neighborhood, I love that we abut a regional park and are across the street from a (man made) lake.
Pretty much exactly the same. I don't care so much for the city I live in but I do like that everything is within 2 hours. I'm between LA and San Diego as well.
I'm in the Philly area. We're two hours from everything.
Same answer.
As to my specific suburb, the best thing is my neighbors. We have a great group with similar aged kids, who all hang out a lot. I don't ever plan to move.
The weather is my #1. I also love that on any given day we can go to Napa, SF, Santa Cruz or Big Sur etc and be home in time for bedtime. So much beauty along the coast. It's just a really happy place to live.
Columbus has low cost of living and is a great mix of people from all over the country, which is also why we're one of the top market research areas for the contry. We tend to get products tested here before they're made national.
dragon's breath , what state do you live in? That looks like nirvana to me!
I'm in the PNW. If you look up the Columbia River Gorge, well, it is nirvana. Except when the weather is crappy I didn't get out and take near enough photos this year though. When the weather is better, I hope to get out and do more day hikes.

Ditto! I love that I can play in the snow in the morning and catch the sunset over the ocean all in one day. We have excellent museums in LA and wonderful spaces like Balboa Park. So much to see and do!
I really only dislike the traffic and COL. And the rude people compared to the Midwest and other places
northern VA is not my preferred area. I just can't get it to feel like home.
But pluses - great job market for H and I, lots of culture close by, we can live in the suburbs and forget we live close to the city, short drive to beaches/mountains/wineries, within an hour of my family and 2 of H's brother, lots of variety wrt to "things to do" since it doesn't all have to be in DC. Four seasons is also something that is a must for me.
Take out the BIL and the four seasons and this all applies to me as well.
I'm 10 minutes from NYC and 45 minutes from the beach.
we have amazing food and great shopping (and no sales tax on clothes).
for my town, i live 200 feet from a park. we have mexican, thai, sushi, chinese, vietnamese, pizza/italian, indian restaurants within 1 mile of our house.
everything food-related is good for me.
this is all fine and dandy, but it is extremely HCOL and i am not thrilled by that.
It's so green everywhere. I love it so much. I love the water and the lake-beach we have. I love how dog-friendly the entire place is. So many hiking trails and parks and bike-friendly. There are a ton of Indians here so it's easy to get Indian clothes and grocery. We live about 15 minutes from Seattle. So, far enough from the city to have free parking and a small town vibe but close enough to go and return stuff in the big mall, lol.
