This reminds me of this episode of Will and Grace where someone told Grace. "Oh! My hairdresser is Jewish!" and Grace said, "Oh, yeah, I'm sure I see him at the weekly, secret meetings."
OP, since you say SO MANY Sikhs live in your area, why not restrict your condolences to the ones you know personally?
FWIW, I'm not necessarily offended by the, uh, stereotyping. I just think it's a socially awkward comment, and I can't really frame how or why. Probably a combination of what most people have said.
In the US, if your intentions are good, it's OK to profile random strangers from other cultures or religions while you're pumping your gas or paying for your Altoids. What's so hard to understand about that?
The ends justified the means. If you don't agree you're a heartless bitch and your husband should feel bad for you. Carry on.
Thanks Moxie, but this board wouldn't be the same without all the raging bitches with holier-than-thou attitudes. They just can't help themselves, it is like a heroin addiction.
Okay, so here's where it broke down.
I think you're feeling kind of insecure after a really awkward interaction with another person. You need to walk away now. Believe me. This is completely the strategy I would have taken in this thread and it never works out for me. It will not work out for you.
I am not feeling insecure about my exchange with the guy, just felt bad I was the one to break the news. I think the exchange broke down with the "fucking weird" and "you are ignorant and clearly have never had contact with a Sikh", but I do admit my part in escalating the arguments. I try not to name call on here, even when I feel it's an apt description, because I don't want to be that kind of person. Clearly I just got too angry here and fought back in a way I preferred I didn't.

so what you are saying is that you know better than actual Sikhs who are asking for this kind of outreach? Gotcha.
I just checked the Facebook walls of the Sikhs I know, and nobody wrote compassionate messages for any of them. OP, would you like their names so you can spread the love?
Would it kill you to admit that this is a tragedy affecting the Sikh community as a whole
Would it kill you* to acknowledge this is a tragedy affecting the country as a whole, and reflects on all of us not just Sikhs?
(*silly hyperbole inserted to mirror your own)
I agree actually, which is why I think in tragedies like this it is important for all Americans to express their support and stand up to this type of hate.

I didn't know Sikhs were asking people to come up to strangers on the street and express their sympathy. I think, you know, NOT being racially or religiously profiled and NOT having hate crimes committed against them is probably more in line of what they're looking for.

Wait. Are you saying that every time there is a tragedy we should acknowledge everyone on the street and offer sympathy?

except for where they are stating in the news that they appreciate the outpouring of support, thoughts, and prayers.
I also don't see how it is racially profiling to identify someone as a Sikh. It doesn't take special training to know someone is one.

Sadly this stuff happens all over the world across religions regularly. I think being compassionate is the right emotion for any senseless killings. But I think your approach was a bit presumptuous.

Apparently it does if you insist people confuse them for Muslims all the time.

Well, then, casmgn, let me be the first to say to you: "I am so sorry about what happened at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin today, that is absolutely awful."
It is awful, I am glad you agree. I really hope this country can move past this senseless vitriol and violence. Everyone in this country deserves to feel safe and not worry they will be killed because of their religion, how they look, or what they wear.

um it is pretty well documented and most of the Sikhs interviewed in the wake of the tragedy brought this up - that many ignorant people think they are Muslim extremists connected to AQ or the Taliban because of the turbans.

I was ambivalent on this whole thread until "I feel sorry for your husbands" was dropped and now I'm in love with all of it. This is waaaay more entertaining than hipsters.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

So, since you're a Sikh vs Muslim differentiation expert, what about this complete stranger, other than the fact that he wore a Turban and had a long beard, made you so certain he was Sikh?
He could have said, "hey lady, I'm not Sikh, I'm Taliban sympathizer and you're holding-up the line" for all you knew.

This would be useful knowledge for me since apparently I have the IQ of a kumquat, I would never want to make an assumption and we all know it doesn't take a lesson in differentiating to be sure.
