They are super common in my IRL circle. I had no idea people had strong opinions about them.
We had one for about a week until it fell off and got lost somewhere. I don't know if it helped but I don't think it hurt. The beads were individually knotted so not a chocking hazard and it had a breakaway clasp that released pretty easily (hence the fact that it's now lost) so I really don't see the huge danger here. Certainly no more dangerous than a headband.
I'm side eyeing the vaccine comparison. Not even a little bit the same thing. Whether I put a placebo-effect necklace on my kid has no impact on anyone else.

I think they are total woo but I'm with you on this.

I totally agree that amber teething necklaces don't carry the same threat of harm as not vaccinating. I just don't think the science behind teething necklaces is any more sound than the science behind not vaccinating. It's all woo. That's all I meant.

I think they are very silly and I (mentally) roll my eyes when I see them but I wouldn't say I have strong feelings against them. I agree they are super ugly.
DD2 used one and DD3 has one on now... Flame me if you must. I like them and think they work, my mom was skeptical as was DH but now when someone asks about them they both start gushing about how awesome they are!

I used it sporadically. I don't think it did much but it didn't hurt to have it on (yes I watched her the whole time and she did not wear it sleeping). It's not widely used in my circle but I know people that have used them.
i bought one, but L doesn't wear it because she nearly hung herself trying to play with it when i put it on her and she doesn't care about her teeth coming in.
i see them everywhere!! i must run in hippie circles.
Ha I am the furthest thing from crunchy but both my kids used one. Dd2 is super attached to hers, it's like her security blanket. I don't see how she could choke on it so it doesn't worry me.
Definitely dont use it for the fashion but I've even got daycare convinced. The one day she didn't wear it she was a mess! That's said, I have no idea if it really helps but it doesn't hurt IMO.

We used it with DS and noticed a difference when we'd forget to put it on after a bath or one of us lost it for a few days especially with drooling. I don't care if it's total voodoo, it worked for us and I was willing to try anything.
I never said it was like being anti-vax from a public health standpoint. I said I thought they were the same from a scientific standpoint in the sense that I think both lack any real scientific support. I would never claim the societal harm or public health impact is the same. Two things can be comparable in one sense and still be distinguishable for other reasons.
No, but It's pretty common in my family for babies to wear gold necklaces and other gold jewelry, so I'm not going to get too pearl clutchy about this.
We use one. It's around her ankle. I have no idea if it does anything but the two days we didn't use it she was miserable. I don't know if I lean crunchy or not.

Who knew this was such a hot topic? I used one with Cal. And who knows if it worked or not but he didn't have nearly the teething issues that his brother had.
And while some people might think they are ugly, you can't deny this is a cute baby.
I know you're supposed to watch them while they have it on, but come on. If it were that easy, nobody would baby proof. Tylenol/Advil might be "invasive," but at least it's safe and effective.
Everyone I know puts them on the ankle and lets their babies sleep with them. I am way too nervous for that. I do have a "mom friend" who is home schooling and doing EC so take that for you will.
WAIT-:THEY'RE NOT FOR CHEWING ON?
I am one who didn't know what they were except that they existed. I ASSumed it was a teething necklace that the mom wears. When I saw the picture that token posted I still ASSumed the kid chewed on it.

Oh, no, it's "medicine" absorbed through the skin.
Everyone I know who uses them thinks they are the bee's knees and I just can't get on board. I feel like my enjoyment of essential oil smells is already a bridge too far.
Most of the moms I know also wear them for various things, and some wear hazelwood as well for digestive stuff.

The only way I could be more of a hippy would be if I had a compost pile out back. #1 I'm too lazy to take the damn thing off when I'm supposed to. #2 Not terribly convinced of the principle by which they are supposed to work. As someone who is half-Chinese I've heard a lot of similar things said about wearing jade. I wear jade because it's pretty. I don't think it's magical. #3 Also in comparison to jade there is too much hullabaloo about "did you get the right kind?" or "It won't do anything if you get a knock off so you have to figure out who the reputable brands are". I have better things to figure out.
Edit: TO clarify. I don't have a problem with the idea of substances can be absorbed through the skin. If it's possible to absorb enough hormones through a estrogen/progesterone patch to prevent pregnancy or enough nicotine through a patch to curb a cigarette craving then I'm sure that any number of things can go right through the skin. It's more of a particular case of I don't have enough proof that the amber puts out anything.
As a mom to a baby, I know nothing about amber teething necklaces and probably won't use one on M. But when I had heard of them before, I totally assumed it was a chunky beaded necklace that the mom wore and the baby could gnaw on while she held him. LOL
this is what I thought too. lol
I have never even seen a baby wearing one or noticed.
side note- I was looking at a blog recently and this 18 month old had on a "statement" necklace. It was made of fabric but still...wtf to a toddler with a statement necklace.
