I had the first gen Nook reader and last year upgraded to the Nook Tablet.
I always buy a squaretrade warranty with my small electronics that I plan to use for a while.
Talk to me about this. My H just got the Tablet. I think I may need it in my life. Do you have any issues with eyestrain? I love the e-ink on the 1st gen, but would like to do other stuff with my Nook. Like, ya know, play on the web or Pinterest. I got a new Acer Ultrabook and like it a lot, but I don't cart it around with me the same way I do my Nook.
I can't justify the insane amount of money an iPad costs when I do still use a laptop a great deal.
Hmm, I'll look into a separate warranty when/if we get a new e-reader. And I'll check into our state laws... that's interesting. We had an issue with a Samsung TV - we ended up getting it replaced even though it was outside of its warranty. I can't remember why it was replaced even though it was out of warranty, but we still have the replaced version 6 years later.
I'm definitely going to contact Amazon again and let them know that I'm rage-y. Whether that does anything other than give me an outlet for my rage, I don't know, and I don't really care. I just like releasing my aggression on folks.

$15 off the new kindle is actually a relatively big discount, close to 20%.
I'd be ragey that there was no other troubleshooting that was even suggested, but, in the end, it's a cheap and therefore essentially disposable product when compared to something like a computer. I'd definitely call back and ask for someone who will give you a better answer.

Oh, and if you purchased with an amex, you get a 2 year warranty. Our USAA card has the same thing. So try to figure out which card you used to purchase and see if it might still cover you.
yep, thats exactly what has happened to every ipod I've ever owned. Apple just tells me to buy a new one after 2-3 years, and I don't even get the dicount.
I think if they had suggested a bunch of other things, I'd be much less annoyed. It's like, "hey we know our product is crap, want to buy a new one?"
We (or at least I) don't have a lot of tech gadgets. I have my iPhone, which is a 3GS and it's almost 3 years old. I may upgrade this fall if a 5 comes out. I have an ipod nano that is 8 years old and it still works fine. My rage is probably exacerbated by the fact that this is the first time something of mine has malfunctioned and I've been told, "well, it happens. BUY A NEW ONE!" Dicks!

I do not have any issues with eyestrain. I prefer to read with the dark gray background and white writing. Otherwise at night I feel like there is too much light coming at my eyes. I also keep other electronics with the display lights low.
I loved the original Nook but I really wanted something that I did not need a booklight to read at night. And I was a bonus to be able to have apps and go online. I used to frequent to the Nook Tablet boards on BN and I think they made a Nook2Android sd card so it would boot up as a full tablet. I know they have one for the Nook Color. That might be something to check out if you want more tablet like features (because the NT is not a tablet just a fancier NC).

I still have my iPod Mini that is 9 years old and is still kicking.

lucky duck. They always tell me they have a life span of about 3 years. So basically, its "deal with it."
Now that I have an iphone I will never buy another one, and I just know I have to upgrade it every 2-3 years.

I don't use it regularly anymore but I use it to play music from a docking station. We have bought quite a few shuffles though. Mostly because DH loses them!
I just got an iPhone this summer and I bought a squaretrade warranty for two years until I can upgrade again. Something always happens to my cell phones and now I can not live without it.

Ugh, my husband lost his nano that I bought him. I bought him a car stereo he could hook it up too, also. I told him I'm not buying him another one!
y4m - I've had 3 different people tell me that about their nooks. I'm honestly really disappointed in Amazon's customer service. I've never had an issue with them before, so it's kind of surprising.
I'm one of those people who is willing to pay more for stuff if it means better customer service. I shop almost exclusively at Nordstrom for myself because of their customer service I think in the long run it saves me money b/c if something deteriorates, they will take it back. And I've rarely had that issue with anything purchased there, so stuff lasts longer too.
I'm going to call Amazon back and we're going to see what we need to do with the extra warranty via our credit card, but I'm at the point where I will just buy a nook instead. I think my husband is on the warranty via our credit card bandwagon for now, b/c it costs us less. But I'm hesitant to give Amazon anyone's money at this point.
eclaires~ That sucks! Do a google search and see if others have handled the same issue differently. You said dh was pretty handy maybe he would be able to rig something up for you.
Whatever happened to companies wanting customers to know how high-quality their products were instead of saying "you should buy this warranty plan because the product we're selling you is actually pretty crappy and will probably break"?
I just hate this whole warranty thing that is everywhere now. Why should I have to pay extra because your product is crap?? Shouldn't you be giving me a discount because of this, not charging me extra??
I have an iPod Touch 2G and although it still works, constant software updates have slowed it down and apps are starting to struggle as they get updated. Some apps flat out don't work on my model and others have become all but unusable because they are now so slow.
I have a 1G iPod that weighs a thousand pounds but works fine, aside from crap battery life. The less complicated the better, I suppose.
I used my first generation nano for about 6 years and it only broke because I dropped it, so not all apple products are crap.
I never said all apple products are crap (typed on my macbook while sitting next to my ipad).
However, my point is that all the electronic companies do that. Its not an amazon thing. Heck, I've had issues with Barnes & Nobel customer service, too. None of the companies are perfect. (although some apple lovers would debate that lol) It sucks, but it is what it is. Most electronics have a set life.
Overall, IMO, amazon has fantastic customer service and I still prefer the kindle to the nook (just my personal preference, and I much prefer getting books via amazon than B&N).

I would search the Internet for suggestions before you toss it.
If it makes you feel any better, our $3k fridge died a few months after the warranty expired and samsung told us we were SOL. Dh researched ways to "hack" it and got it to work.
My 2nd gen kindle still works, so they aren't all crap. That doesn't help you, though, I know.
Just a little update - I called back last night, mostly to make myself feel better. The guy also offered me (in conjunction with a discount on a new kindle) some credit for books. I was like, "No, I really don't want to be further tied to Amazon right now." Anyway, I explained to him that if my kindle was older, I'd probably really appreciate this deal, but at this point, I figured it made me the idiot to give them more money for a product that won't even last two years. I was also told that this issue is uncommon so I shouldn't worry about it happening again w/ another kindle. My question/response to that was - if this is so uncommon and unexpected, then why is it treated within the typical 1 year warranty? They did admit that the product was defective if it broke this soon. The supervisor did give me an email address to provide feedback too, and they've asked me to call to talk to them again after receiving my email (but it's the same number so I'm not really sure what they can offer me that the others haven't so we'll see).
Our credit card company offers an extra year of warranty on things like this, so I started the claim process after I got off the phone last night. Apparently they just give me the money I spent ($139). If we do end up going that route, I will just buy a nook.
My husband has done a lot of googling/youtubing/reading/etc. on the issue and it really does seem to be something that is not fixable.
I certainly don't expect things to last forever, but I also don't expect something that is used in a normal way to only last a little under 2 years. And while some people might be okay with just using the discount to get another one, I'm not okay with giving Amazon more money just to be in this situation again in less than 2 years. My whole thing is if they admit that this is uncommon, defective, etc., why isn't it treated differently than a product that was not defective? It was defective the moment I purchased it - they say it should last much longer than 1 year 10 months so I shouldn't worry about purchasing another one and this happening again. If that is the case, then I think it's something that should be handled outside of their 1 year warranty on a non-defective product.

I just wanted to post that if you do go with a Nook you may be able to convert your books to their format using Calibri. Here is the link calibre-ebook.com/ I use it to make PDF's E-Pub format.

Amazon is trying not to see the kindle as a product, though. It's just a way for them to be able to deliver other media - which is where their real product lies - to your hands. Jeff Bezos would like to get to a point where they can give kindles away for free. They're already a loss leader, like the PS3 is for Sony (remember when kindles were $350?). It's with the other things where they make money.
