When the moms I know hit 30 running became "the thing." That's awesome, I like to run too. But I have to say I do not understand the race obsession lol. I get running local races or whatnot, but I know about 10 separate people running in the Princess Disney races this weekend. That crap is expensive. It is a lot of money to register, stay at a Disney hotel and these ladies all have outfits. Forget running outfits. They've got the tutus, the maleficent horn hats, the running outfits that make them look like various princesses, the etsy shirts that say "These princesses wear running shoes." Perhaps it's b/c I don't get out much but if I am spending all this cash on all this stuff, I want, like a vacation, not a marathon :-)

So...take a vacation? LOL, why do you care? They've found something they can do together, that's good for their health, and that they can have fun doing. Unless they're broke and paying race entry fees before paying their bills, you sound a little jealous.
I get it, even though I don't run. It definitely has to do with community and connection with others. It's a way to build a community via a healthy habit.

I really want to run in a disney half and I pretty much hate running now and haven't done it in three years. But if I ever decide to pick it up again Id like to do one - they look fun

Ha! I freely admit to this below. I am saying this a little TIC. I really don't hate on them or care, I just don't get it

I love that my first ever half was the Disney princess. It was my bday weekend and h made a long weekend out of it for me! Who cares how people spend their time and money! If they like it, enjoy it!
The amount of money I spend on Pure Barre classes is probably flameful, let alone the amount I have spent on my taekwondo classes and gear. *shrug* Whatever motivates you.

Maybe some people want to run for health benefits, and doing races like the Disney races are something that makes it fun. Also, compared to a lot of running and workout clothes out there these days, $98 is nothing. Plus, the cost of running gear and races is relatively small compared to other hobbies (cycling, hiking, triathlons, skiing, photography, etc.) Stuff is expensive.
Well, I hate running so I'd need at minimum a cute outfit to get me motivated.
ETA: given it some thought. cute outfit would not be enough. also, need cash, hot half-naked guys to carry me around, and probably also daily massages. THEN maybe I'll consider potentially running. I think.
I'm not a mom but I am 30. Races (when I was running regularly) kept me motivated to train. I ran PHM (actually the 10K/half challenge) last year as my ultimate goal/reward race. I went from being almost 250 pounds and not runnin/active at all to losing a good bit of weight and a much more active person because all I wanted was to wear a damn tutu and run that race. It's not for everyone but it is an amazing experience.

I'll also add that I did my first (and so far only) 5K a few years ago and it was completely different experience than running alone. It reminded me of being back in junior high track, lol, only without the pressure to win or place. I hadn't had that kind of adrenaline rush in a long time, that comes with running in an actual race with other people. I can see why people enjoy that.
And so if it's a little cutesy, or cheesy, or whatever to do the color runs/costume runs/mud runs/obstacle courses -- eh, whatever! I didn't get to the point of being a grown-up just to entirely avoid doing silly things for fun.
I love that Etsy shop. And I'm still stuck on C25K week four for about the 4th time.
It took me like 4 or 5 months to finish an 8-week couch 2 5k.
I just signed up for my first 5k in 5 years. I find it motivating to have a "reason" to run (ie have to stay in shape for that run in March) because I'm not really a natural runner.
The 5k is st patty's day themed, and I'm totally dressing up. Haters gonna hate.
This is my big contribution to this thread. DO NOT SPEND $100 on those outfits! Holy hell. Admittedly, I have no desire to run a Disney race or get decked out, but to each their own. With that said, you can get those sparkle skirts for around $30 (I think?), then throw on a matching tank and arm warmers. That's basically what that outfit is. I am not anti princess, but make them yourself for much cheaper.
ETA: While I'm anti Disney races for myself, I have spent an insane amount of money on marathons in various states. I get it.
They just announced the first half marathon at disneyland Paris in 2016. I kind of want to forfeit all birthday/Mother's Day/christmas/Arbor Day presents between now and then so that I can go. Runcations are fun as hell!
I hear you. I love running. Love it. I've been running for a long time and I am drawn to it because it's a solitary experience where I can block out everything and everyone basically get into a zone where I am almost meditative. I've attended races with friends, but they are like me and we basically say see ya later and plan a meet up spot after and go onto our respective corrals. Even if I race with someone who is my pace I find it very disruptive to talk while I run.
So, I find dressing up and running in herds as a social event to be very "NMS", shall we say? I don't like to draw attention to myself and running in a tutu seems like a very uncomfortable situation. The money part of it, ehhh, whatever. Races are expensive.
The only time tutu clad racers really bother me is when they ignore race etiquette and clog things up with their good-times having without regard to other racers. That behavior is not unique to tutu wearers, but they stick out more. And that is a whole other thread.

Can I tell you that the Nike womens half gives you a Tiffany necklace at the end, presented by firemen in tuxedos?

Crossfit membership, a nutrition coach, and my aerial Lyra membership.
I'm a runner, a few years past 30, and I'm terrible at it. But I still do it because I think races with my friends are fun! Every time I'm at a race that I'm not participating in, I get the overwhelming urge to sign up for something in the near future. Running 'vacations' are the reasons I've traveled to Anchorage, San Francisco, and a lot of other far less exciting places.
