If I caught my kids doing that, I'd probably yank their arms out of their sockets pulling them down. Then I'd hiss the whisper of death at them, march them to the car, and ground them forever. We all know I'm 'bout that parenting life, tho.
I kind of can't blame people for losing their shit over this.
ITA. We took our students (8th graders) there last week and I gave them the come to Jesus talk about behavior at memorials before I would let them step foot on the mall. It's not a playground.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I kind of can't blame people for losing their shit over this.
I know, but women's didn't fit in title.
i think it's disgraceful of parents to let their kids do that, but I guess I ultimately can't blame the kids.
the older kid is plenty old enough to know better. the little one the parents should be on top of. I do blame the parents for not keeping their kids in line though.

I would do this regardless. If it wasn't meant for climbing on, ya'll best not be climbing on it.
According to the story I read, the parents encouraged the climbing. This photo crops out the glares of death people are shooting the kids (and possibly parents). I can't believe how disgraceful this is.
FWIW, the news blurred out the kid's faces, so I'm not outraged a bit.

^o) They encouraged it? Is it those same fools who wrote their names on the Colosseum? Gah!
it is testimony to how badly I need to wear my glasses that I cannot tell their faces are blurred.
My understanding is that this was not a case where the kids climbed up and someone happened to snap the picture in that moment - the report I read stated that the parents were laughing and encouraging their kids. To climb on a war memorial, including a what is very clearly a wounded soldier.

If the photo you posted is straight from the news, yes, the faces are blurred.
In the original photo there's an old guy in a wheel chair who appears to be wearing a hat that indicates he might be a war veteran.
This is what the photographer said, though, so I don't see any comments about the parents encouraging it:
"Here are some completely unedited photos I took at Washington DC. I feel like I improved, but not as much as I would have liked. I'll be spending more time on photography and less time on editing.
I managed to take some decent photos and even a very powerful one of two little brats climbing over war memorial right in front of a veteran. It was a sobering moment. Still I learned a lot, but I have a long ways to go."
Munson told USA TODAY Network via Facebook that he thinks the children were being disrespectful.
Earlier, Munson told WHNT News 19, "Certain memorials and statues are more positive and welcoming to kids and parents expressing their freedom and good vibes, other memorials (this one) focuses on the tragedies of war and how certain groups of people played a big role in helping others recover from it."
He went on, "Having children step all over a wounded warrior is not an appropriate way to express the freedom our veterans fought for in my opinion."
I encountered exactly this on a second grade field trip to an arboretum last year. There was a temporary art exhibit on the grounds consisting of sculptures of giant bugs, each surrounded by signs that read, "Please do not climb on the sculptures." Parents of the students were encouraging their children to climb them so that they could take photos.

My kid would've seen these kids playing on it and went to play on it too and Ida been loud in my "No. Monuments aren't for playing. It's disrespectful." Like I am when kids are climbing fences on the habitats at the zoo and mine tries to join in.

shame on the parents for encouraging them and NOT telling them to get down ASAP !! my parents would have shot us kids the DEATH STARE if we tried to do that. then again, the thought would have NEVER crossed our minds to climb on something like that in the first place. those memorials are there for a reason, respect the reason kids !
we did a trek along the mall when dd was 13 months old. old enough to remain in the stroller most of the time but when we let her loose, I had an eye on her and any errant climbing would have resulted in a swift pick up from me !
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
Considering I just yelled at some kids that aren't even mine all because they didn't pay attention to someone else's baby while playing, I probably would have been arrested for grabbing these little assholes or their parents and whisper yelling in their faces.
