He left for college (I was a sophomore in HS) and a few weeks later he called and broke up with me because he "didn't want to be tied down with a girlfriend at home." I played a lot of Deana Carter's "Strawberry Wine" on my car stereo for the next few months (don't judge, it was 1997).
I'm not judging. I used to play Kenny Chesneys, "A lot of things different" and Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow "Pictures" over and over again. Like my life was really that dramatic too.
And I can't listen to George Strait's "Run" to this day and not bust out laughing. My old roommate had that as "their" song with her boyfriend at the time.

We broke up and got back together a million times between my junior year of high school when I met him, and my junior year of college when we decided we were tired of making each other insane. I don't really know who made the final decision to stop taking completely.

This includes high school? He cheated on me and we parted ways.
ETA:
If not, then it I'll use my first marriage. A series of events/realizations/discoveries led us to the realization that we should pursue the paths we wanted. We split amicably.

He dumped me. We were together for 3 years -- from just before I turned 16 until I was nearly 19. We grew apart, I didn't want to have sex (I saw several friends have pregnancy scares and didn't want that for myself). I took it hard.

The relationship wasn't all that serious now that I look back, but it seemed so at the time. He initiated the downgrade to "just friends," which means we didn't talk or hang out that much, but when we did, we would hook up. I spent Fourth of July with his family, but not really on purpose (more because I drank too much too early in the day), didn't sleep with him, which made things awkward. We went camping with a group of friends after that, and there was more awkwardness, and that was that.
We aren't FB friends or in contact, but we have mutual good friends, so I know he's married, etc.
Freshman year of college- he had been treating me like crap. A friend drove me over to his frat house to break up with him and I bawled like crazy. It was a strange situation though, I knew that I didn't love him... I maybe liked the idea of having a bf more than I actually liked him?
It was for the best though, we broke up in April and I met H in August.

Oh god I had this unrequited love thing with my good friend's ex for YEARS in college. I was so obsessed with him. I would listen to "Someday We'll Know" by the New Radicals on repeat for HOURS crying about it. lololololol.

I think my next door dorm neighbor was your old roommate's boyfriend. He used to get drunk and play that song as loud as possible every night because he missed her.
@justdairy how about "whiskey lullaby" for you? Or Garth "remember me" or "that O'l wind." OMG. Country songs of the 90's and early 2000's, I can't quit you.

I dated the same guy all through college. I spent my entire senior spring semester trying to break up with him. He didn't want me to go away to grad school, uh not your decision. He was so clingy. Finally we broke up and I hooked up with another guy. He found out, freaked and was sobbing to me on the phone. Umm we were broken up.
It would have never worked.
I think he's married to the girl he dated after me.

I have a thing for bad country songs lol. The more depressed or the sillier the better. Haha. 90s Country is on my Pandora quite often.
Whiskey Lullaby as much I love Brad Paisley really creeps me out. Still.
Garth Brooks still gets me "She had a need to feel the Thunder. Chase the lightening from the sky. Watch a storm with all it's wonder, ragin' in her lover's eyes..........There has never been another summer......"
I may or may not have been on the dance floor alone in my fave college bar at 9pm after a few shots belting out "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy" as well after one breakup. My friends still bring that up 15 years later...haha.

I am DYING to see Garth in concert. Like, would spend +$500!

I went when he was here in November. So much fun and worth the price.
The guys in the three serious relationships I had before DH all married the girl right after me. Glad I could help them decide what they didn't want in a wife? lol

I had one boyfriend my freshman year in high school before DH. I don't remember how it ended, it was drama though. And then we hooked up a few times sophomore year until he started dating my bff. That was the end of my relationship with him and her.
DH and I started dating beginning of sr. Year of high school. We had some drama and broke up for a month or two in college. But otherwise, been pretty solid for 12.5 years.
so at the time, I REALLY thought my first boyfriend had been "the one" and was devastated for like 6 months after he dumped me. We were 14, had been dating since we were 12. Dating is a very loose term though because you know, we COULDN'T DRIVE. So all of our dates were youth group events or basically group dates with our friends. The most we did was french kiss and we were pretty sure we were going to hell for it. He dumped me because my family was moving to a new church after a scandal at that one. I listened to a lot of CCM (contemporary christian music) in the wake. I hope I threw out my journals from that time period but something tells me they are in a box in the basement.
My high school relationship was almost 4 years long and we broke up at the end of our freshman year in college. Long distance was not working for us and we were going in very different directions. I was getting back in touch with my faith and not comfortable having sex anymore and understandably that was a deal breaker for him. He is and always has been agnostic. We broke up around spring break, then got back together, then broke up when I came home at the end of the semester for good. I think it was mutual but I honestly don't know. We were best friends and it was hard for us to let that go, but we both met and started dating our now spouses within 2 weeks of breaking up. Everything aligned just right.
And now his wife is one of my best friends, which can be weird but that was all 12 year ago so we've all clearly moved on!

No joke I wrote him a letter when he was in jail for marijuana possession. I found out he cheated and was in jail within a few days of each other. I was done with his ass.
When he got out he told me what hurt him the most was the letter was typed and not handwritten. Lol #jaildiaries
