A republican who got up and said, "Look, I support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, equal pay legislation, gay marriage, student loan reform, campaign finance reform, the ACA and abortion" would still not get my vote until s/he got up and condemned the racist, sexist, anti-democratic, hateful, and shameful behavior of the party.
This actually brings up a pretty good point in that even if you like an individual, they are ultimately pressured by their own party or pushed out. Either that or the voters won't give them a shot in hell.
I have, in the past, voted for R's in local (maybe even state? I can't remember that long ago) elections.
Right now, although I do think both parties have issues, I blame the R extremists for most of what is wrong with politics in our country. Not your everyday R citizen who is still hoping for a sane candidate with a fiscal policy they agree with, but the R elected officials who are unwilling to stand up to the temper tantrums going on in their party. I am really terrified of what will happen to this country if a R controls the White House and both houses of Congress.
So I guess we shouldn't expect a mirror thread asking the cons which lib candidates scare the shit out of them? Everyone's too busy in post-orgasmic inhalation.

Wait, the mirror would be asking non-Democrats if there are any D candidates they'd consider voting for. Would you like me to start such a thread for fairness?

Because this is what we would get. ^^
I'm unclear as to why that's a hindrance. There are no inhibitions evident in posts reaming one party, and they range from snark to eloquence. It's hilarious if my post is being used as a reason no libs might want to ask if lib candidates elicit a "hell no" response from the board's cons.

I'm not asking for a Republican you would vote for. I'm asking for a candidate that wouldn't draw such extreme language and panic. Someone who wouldn't get your vote, but that doesn't send you into a tailspin of doom.
Right now, I feel like we can't even have a healthy debate because it goes straight to Republican candidate=super scary bringer of doom. So all I want is to know of is a real person that Rs could nominate where we could talk about actual politics.
I also think it's strange how caught up everyone gets in what they say vs. what they do. I tend to think 99% of what comes out of any politician's mouth is complete bullshit. Their record of actual governing is far more telling. So even if someone says all the right things, their record is what really counts.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley

Considering I got my head bitten off asking a fucking non-partisan question, let's just say I'm gunshy.

I was meh on Rubio (meaning he didn't induce panic) until I got to the part where he doesn't support Net Neutrality. I think it's just that each candidate so far has had nutbar ideas. Case in point, he doesn't want Net Neutrality because the government is going to take it over. Which is hardly what is happening. I could probably pull up his voting records to see where he stands on it, but I haven't because he's using it as part of his campaign.
I'm sure there are R's out there that wouldn't make me run for the hills. If it weren't for those pesky abortion rights and gay marriage, I'd probably be closer to an R than a D anyway. Maybe. I dunno...IIOY hasn't wonked out enough recently, I might be reverting.
I don't think any have declared for the current 2016 presidential race though. As far as I know there is nothing about Jeb for example that would make me literally fear for the future of the world beyond the PixyNews the world is ending sense (the GOP isn't special on that one so it doesn't count...Hillary isn't somehow going to reverse the environmental course we're on either). From a quick perusal of his wiki page, I don't like him on basically any major policy points (I was pretty sure this was the case, but I just double checked in case) so I'm not going to vote for him, but he doesn't make me want to hide under my bed.
On the other hand, as an example - Ted Cruz is legit scary to me as a potential leader of the free world. My solidly con leaning H agrees with me on that one,, so I dont' think that's just our group-think speaking. I fear how he would react to the first crisis he comes across, because he has in no way shown himself capable of behaving as a fucking grownup let alone a capable and trustworthy leader.

But this is part of the issue with party politics because what state governors do vs. presidents is different when it comes to a voting record. Because even if the McCain's of the world (he's my least scary R) won, he has to at some point tow the party line. Heck, I'm pissed at TN Gov. Haslam because he's actually a moderate R, but the rest of the party is BSC, so he doesn't push back which leaves us with shit like the Don't Say Gay bill.
I may be too cynical, but I didn't expect Obama to be more progressive because he has to govern from the center. And that's pretty much true for everyone who ends up in Presidential office unless you got 4 terms FDR style.
chris Christie is another potential for 2016 that I don't find scary. I don't LIKE him, but again, not scary. My NJ relatives (several of whom are teachers, all of whom are blue through and through) would disown me for even saying that much, but...yeah, he's just normal NJ shady con, not terrifying.

I have been reading but not posting because my opinion is pretty irrelevant here (dirty Canadian socialist that I am), but I just had to say ESF. <3 That was beautiful.
LOL, I actually got up and poured a glass of wine when I was done writing so I could cool off.
Now I'm wound up again.
Look, it's not that any one candidate sends me into a tailspin of doom.
I think it is terrible for America that a Democrat is going to win this race by default. I think it's pure and utter shit where we have a system where ideology, ideas, and ethics don't really matter a lick, because the alternative is some guy who spent 9 months on the campaign trail pretending that science, rape, and transgendered people are made up liberal boogeymen.
We aren't talking about differences over things like individual mandates in health insurance and capital gains tax rates. If that's all this really is about, sure, Mitt Romney does not make me want to die. This isn't 2008. This isn't even 2012. This isn't a situation where I could just ride out 4 years with my fingers crossed that Romney would be too busy cutting capital gains taxes to demand vag cam legislation. If that was really all this was, then sure, I'd spend some time pouting and regroup for 2020.
That's not what this is!!!
We are talking about a political party that denies rape is a thing and whips people into a hysteria over "illegals" voting. You've got state legislators up in arms over tin foil hat theories about sharia law infiltrating the United States. Others wondering what will happen to a husband who rapes his unconscious wife. Still more with record deficits thinking that banning poor people from using food stamps at casinos is the solution. Others are passing laws ordering doctors to tell women that their abortions can be reversed (the fuck?), or making sure a pizza parlor can claim religious freedom when a gay couple wants them to cater their wedding, or passing "show me your papers" type laws.
THEY WROTE A LETTER TO IRAN DE-LEGITIMIZING THE PRESIDENT.
THEY WROTE A LETTER TO IRAN DE-LEGITIMIZING THE PRESIDENT.
THEY WROTE A LETTER TO IRAN DE-LEGITIMIZING THE PRESIDENT.
And yet, somehow it is liberals that are throwing irrational temper tantrums over the slate of Republican candidates?
Honestly, it has nothing to do with the candidate. That person could be a saint. But as long as the GOP is what it is, I absolutely will not vote to give any one of them power in any election, let alone the presidential one. I just do not believe the Republican Party is actually interested in governing in a serious, adult way. I don't believe they are a legitimate political party.
People who take their elected power seriously are not using urban legends to drive legislation and policies. They don't waste time banning food stamp recipients from spending money on cruise ships. Or waste taxpayer dollars on a witch hunt to drug test poor people.
People who take their elected power seriously are not forcing doctors to spew lies to women about what abortion does and doesn't do, and whether it is reversible or not. They don't force doctors to retraumatize rape victims by shoving cameras up their vaginas against their will just so they don't have to spend a lifetime traumatized by their rapist's baby.
They don't call rape babies "gifts." Gifts! They don't say rape can be "beautiful." BEAUTIFUL, OK? NO.
People who take their elected power seriously do not say things like "legitimate rape" or "forceable rape." They do not deny that rape happens. They don't spread lies about how rape victims don't get pregnant.
They don't put science deniers on environmental committees.
They don't put anti-vaxxers on health committees.
They don't they sit around figuring out how to criminalize the use of public bathrooms by transgendered people.
They don't use "religious freedom" as a rallying cry for homophobia.
They don't proudly display the confederate flag. They sure as shit don't sit around debating whether Confederate Heroes Day should still be a fucking state holiday because holy shit, why was it ever fucking there?!?
They acknowledge that racism actually still happens in America today.
And for the love of all things holy and sacred,
THEY DO NOT WRITE TO TERRORISTS TO TELL THEM THAT OUR PRESIDENT IS ILLEGITIMATE.
The people I want to vote for are people that want all Americans voting for them. They know they can win without cheating. They do not have to passing photo ID voting requirements, they don't playfast and loose with voter registration requirements and early voting rules, and they support making voting as easy and efficient as possible for as many citizens.
This is why I find the Republican Party a disgusting cesspool. I don't actually give a shit what their policies are at this point. I'm talking about the fact that they deny facts and science, rewrite history, and just govern in a belligerent, hateful manner. Then vote suppress.

No. NO FUCKING WAY.
All that esf said.
I could maybe see there being an issue if the liberal media were making this stuff up or making it out to be a thing when it isn't, but all of these things that esf brings up are issues that the Republican put to the forefront, in their talking points, every single day. This is how they want to be known to us. This is the face they want to put on. This is what they are advertising and they aren't letting up. I care about fiscal responsibility and I am not against being fiscally conservative. But this shaming of the poors and finger wagging at women, and the disregard for science and the like, I just can't take.
I would like to see a conservative who can take a program that they think is wasteful and either make it into something more sustainable, or replace it with something better. What I don't like is just ending a program that is helping struggling people and just leaving them to their own devices. Or at least talk about the poverty and attempt to address the issues that caused the problem in the first place.

I was posting articles about fiscal issues of interest to me and getting no responses, so I stopped. Even now I post articles about, say, surveillance issues, government fraud, or what's going on in Syria, and I'm lucky to get one response. What interests me seems to have diverged from some of the board's hot topics, and that's fine. I've been here long enough to know how these things go. Frankly my enthusiasm for this election is nil, so I'm content to play in the lighter threads for the time being and participate in the serious threads when someone hasn't already said what I was thinking.

Yes, if not for the poo-pooing on public employees and the fact that he's a Cowboys fan, Christie wouldn't scare me either.

Re: surveillance issues. I thought I had a somewhat decent knowledge about them but after the last couple of days at a work conference with discussions about both Net Neutrality and the various ways government and law enforcement tracks all of us, I find myself looking over my shoulder all the time now lol. So i feel like I can contribute to threads of that topic beyond "surveillance is bad!" now.
