The Camaro is definitely the #1 jackass in this video...but it sure as shit looks like the pickup is pissed off about being nearly cut-off and then tailgated and proceeds to slow down to drive next to the big rig on purpose so as to get him back. I'd love to be able to see the speedo of the recording driver to confirm that.
Which...makes him also a giant jackass because no. Fuck you. I don't care that the Camaro is clearly being driven by somebody with a raging case of the assholes, you don't get to create a new hazard to "teach him a lesson."
Complete your passing maneuver and get the fuck out of the way. Driving next to a truck like that on purpose is stupid regardless of how much more of an idiot the guy behind you might be.
But lord...that Camaro is EXCEPTIONALLY assholish.
You know this is a thing they're trying to get approved in assorted states, right? Legalized lane splitting? It's actually legal in CA. (defacto legal is my understanding. There's no law that says they can, but there's also no law that says they can't and the interpretation has been that it's allowed)
I can never decide how I feel about it. I know I hate it when people do it at speed and don't see how its even kinda reasonable. I don't think I have a problem with it in a jam if the bike is just rolling up between the lanes at like, 20 mph. I know that if MH tried to do it with me on the back of our motorcycle (which we don't actually own anymore...) I'd shit my pants and never fucking forgive him.
H told me this once and I came thisclose to calling him a liar because the concept of this being legal is shocking to me. But then, California.
I didn't believe it until bf was studying for his drivers test here. It's in the DMV manual (though I haven't looked up that actual law).

I don't know if it's because I'm getting old, but I see more and more awful driving everywhere. People drifting in and out of lanes, cutting others off, tailgating, etc. And the impatience! Relax people, we all have places to be, let's get there alive!

I've noticed the same, I get really freaked out driving sometimes because there are some crazy drivers out on the roads and I'm essentially trusting them with my and my family's lives.

Right? I used to commute over an hour one way everyday and I swear the drivers weren't *that* bad. But now I'm annoyed all the way to work, between people cruising in the fast lane, using no turn signals, and just generally being stupid.
And people are insane. We had a case here earlier this year where a guy ran out of gas and just left his van in the middle of the interstate at night while he went to go do whatever, like totally left the scene. A guy ended up hitting it at full interstate speed and died. They didn't do anything to the guy, so a few months later he ended up shooting a man during a road rage incident. This is the fourth shooting during traffic confrontations that I can recall. I think I need a <5 commute!
Also. You have to STOP at stop signs if you're turning right. It's not a free right movement. This goes for red lights too. Red means stop. Not slow and roll.
Every 3-4 months for a day we have a cop that comes and sits at the 4-way stop intersection in our neighborhood because people blow through it like there are no signs. S/he hands out tickets for a day and things get better, then slowly devolve again until a neighbor requests enforcement and they come out to ticket again.
(We're at the point where we just air our driving grievances, yes?)
This is such a pet peeve of mine. The right and left lane are equivalent. There is one speed limit for all the lanes. Passing is done to the left.
The reality of the situation is that in CA, there is no such thing as a passing lane.
Rationalizing as it may be, I don't think causing people to make possibly unsafe lane changes because I'm going 65 in the middle lanes is safer than going with the flow of traffic.
So I'm really late to rhis but....
I've never really admitted this except to my husband but I have a growing anxiety around freeway driving. I don't like driving on freeways and I have tremendous anxiety everytime my H takes DD out and they have to take the freeway (I probably should see someone about this). I attribute the anxiety to the following: (1) I didn't grow up around the massive CA freeway system but now I live near it (put me in a rural Ca backroad and I'm great); (2) I got into a small fender bender 10 years ago on the freeway; and (3) attitudes like the above re. CA drivers.
To the latter point: drivers in CA treat driving like a god damned birth right and not the privlege it actually is. People drive crazy here and it gets worse the more southern you get. And it's all one big joke.
I have no problem jacking up the fines for people who refuse to follow traffic laws. These drivers are killing loved ones left and right.

Not going to lie, I am HORRIBLE about this. And the cops in our area have been cracking down on it because it has been an issue. It's a bad habit for sure.

A lot of the time, for me anyway, when I'm driving in the left lane there is a large line of cars ahead of me. A car will come racing up behind me and tailgate because obviously I, and every other car in the left lane, should just try to squeeze into the right to let him speed past.
I get so mad at this because I can't speed up and so now all the car is doing is tailgating. Maybe he doesn't realize that even if I do move there are still 15 cars ahead of him, maybe he does, but regardless, I'm still in front of you so get out of my ass.

My favorite thing to do in this situation is wash my windshield. Repeatedly.
iammalcolmx can attest to the fact that if you're going 70 in a 65 in Atlanta, you will be left in a cloud of dust.
DUDE. Y'all can add me to the list of people who ain't shit because on the Highway I don't go 65 when the weather is good. There is a surface street I can take to work where I am careful about going the speed limit, and I go very slow in school zones, but the Highway??? Shit...
I can't wait to get you out on the Autobahn in our new ride! Mwahahaha
So would everyone be cool with someone who is unemployed paying zero because they have no income? Not snarky, legit question.
Well they would still have money coming in if they were receiving UE benefits. I'm gonna guess it would be something like total household income. Cars cost money, IDK how many drivers would truly not be part of any income source. Though I wonder how it would work for teenagers or college students who aren't working.
Oh yeah parts of New Jersey 95 is no joke. No slow lane and very compact driving. If you didn't go with the flow of traffic, even if it's way over, you are much more unsafe, IMO.

I always loved the Garden State Parkway south of the Brick area. It's two lanes and it's the 40 lane and the 90 lane and nobody will be happy if you try to go 65-70 (it's a 65 zone).

This is true. I had serious anxiety when we were driving on that to go see H's grandma. I thought we were going to die.

I got pulled over in that area when I was in high school for driving too slow. (I was on my way home from my grandparents' house in Brick.) That's something your friends will never let you forget.

One of these days I am going to post an epic FB rant about my neighbors' total disregard for road rules and then peace out because I live in a neighborhood filled with the shittiest drivers ever and I'm FB friends with a bunch of them.
I tell H at least once a week that its a miracle no one in our neighborhood has been hit by a car because I live among people who think stop signs are optional, going 40+ down the straightaway is acceptable, and who take corners like their asses are on fire. It's as if our builder advertised our neighborhood as a haven for terrible drivers. We are ground zero.

It's been some years since I've drove in Atlanta but I'm pretty sure going the speed limit will get you killed on some of those highways.
I drive in Indiana and Kentucky everyday. There's a few areas where I most certainly wouldn't want to be the law abiding citizen and go the speed limit. Every once in a while I'll come across that person who minds the speed limit and people driving and swerving around them is a hazard all by itself.
omg; there's this stretch of I-70 through Indianapolis where the limit is 55. On most of I-70, I'll go no more than 4mph over the speed limit (74 in a 70). On that stretch, I'll go my max of 9 over (so 64 in a 55) and I'm still the slowest on the road bc most people are still going 75 mph. It's awful.
465 makes me sweat. I just know I'm going to the one getting the ticket.

YOU WOULDN'T!!!! You know when your H wrote me about your surgery he signed himself " the fast driver?" OMG!!
Here, the driving attitude seems to be very different on surface streets vs. the freeway. In the downtown grid, drivers tend to be far less assholish than in the suburbs. There are lots of bicyclists and pedestrians, and lots of one-way streets, so people tend to drive like they know the rules, at least if they live and/or work there. People coming in from the suburbs for dinner are a whole other story. I've yelled at so many people driving the wrong way down one-way streets. Also protected left turns generally are not a thing downtown. People waiting for an arrow and not moving into the middle of the intersection to wait to turn left are not appreciated.
The thing that scares the shit out of me is people who come barreling out of alleys without stopping before the sidewalk. You could easily kill someone doing that. Pedestrians generally don't stop and look before crossing an alley, since you're not expecting them to be used that much.

I'm pretty sure that's all of PA, no?
Hmm. I've never heard of this reputation before and I've lived in various parts of PA since...1991? To the extent we have particularly bad drivers, I will blame construction rage. I defy anyone to drive anywhere in this state without encountering a portion of road under repair.
Also, this reminds me of a post way long ago. Somebody had moved to CO from... AZ I think? and asked how much faster people go above the speed limit normally. She would regularly go 10-15 mph over based on her experience in AZ, and felt like she was going way faster than the rest of traffic. The CO people responded 5 mph. So I wonder if some of it has to do with 1) regional culture, and 2) enforcement. Over 5 mph here and you'll most certainly earn yourself a ticket.
I think culture is part of it, but i also think the amount of the ticket comes into play. I grew up near North Dakota. They have (or had back in the day) extremely low fines. And they drove like bats out of hell.
Similarly, in college we were in Iowa, driving hone, and got pulled over. The ticket said the amount right in it. It was so low that our driver (a prosecutor) decided it was more worth it to take his chances and keep speeding.

Also if anybody is under the impression that PA drivers are particularly bad because they can't merge - blame PennDOT. We've been conditioned not to expect acceleration lanes so we tend to exhibit erratic behavior on onramps. A decade after leaving PA I STILL occasionally catch myself doing the thing where you look for a gap the second you come around the bend, with your foot ready to either floor it or slam on the brakes...only to realize that, duh, there is a 1/4 mile accel lane in front of me and I can just drive like a normal person and join the flow of traffic in an orderly fashion like god and AASHTO intended.
But otherwise, yeah, I've never heard anybody say shit about us. People in MD talk trash on DC drivers all the time, but mostly they just bitch about PA roads, not it's drivers.
I still don't understand why hands-free was allowed to be an exception. It's not the hand off the steering wheel that makes cell phones dangerous. It's the distraction.

I nearly had an altercation with an asshole who was laying on his horn behind me trying to force me to turn right on 1) a red arrow 2) from the center lane. Eff that dude. I'm not breaking traffic laws to make a crazy stranger happy.

Yes! This is in the same category as going to the grocery store and seeing alcohol for sale. We've been so conditioned to accept our state fuckery that other states seem like alternate universes for which we are just not prepared.

That's not really intuitive to most people though. Most people just think, "well I can talk to a passenger, so what's the difference" and the research proving otherwise (the neuro stuff about phone conversations using vision centers in ways that face to face does not, the narrowing of field of vision, etc) is relatively recent. But the initial push for that legislation was all about people looking away from the road to dial or to text.
I want to see red light tickets applied to people who block the intersection. A new ticket for every 10 seconds your dumb ass is blocking traffic.
The best handling of this that I witnessed was a cop in a patrol car who got over his loudspeaker to snark on a driver who was blocking the intersection despite the many signs not to do so in downtown SF. It was hysterical. Nothing too mean, just stuff like "Well look how special you think you must be ..., etc." If I were the driver I would've been mortified. The cop could've ticketed the driver, but didn't, figuring the embarrassment was enough of a fine. I mean, people were literally pointing and laughing at him.
