Lowell Melser on WBAL just started the discussion about using the word thug.
Oh what is he saying? We are watching WJZ
That he was very suprised by SRB's use of the word thug, and also that the councilmen also used the word. Lisa Robinson and Kate Amara agreed they were surprised that everyone in the press conference kept using the word thug.
There is a curfew for juveniles already. why waiting until tomorrow?
My guess is for people who are working or simply cannot get home tonight because of traffic/detours/unexpected problems with their commute due to today's events.

Apparently they just closed school for tomorrow. I wasn't home for my robo call but one of my friends just posted it. I will confirm and check back in.

Nothing on website (BCPSS) or news ones but maybe soon.

Did they go into the history of the word at all?
The last time it was discussed on CEP, many of the white posters had no idea at all it had racist undertones. I imagine white viewers in Baltimore and nationally are going to go,"Huh?" if there's no background given.

I was multitasking so I may have missed it but it seemed like they were surprised that she'd use a strong, insulting word. They didn't seem to acknowledge the racial undertones.
Vespasia - you didn't miss anything, no discussion of racial undertones of the word. Just surprise that she used such a strong word, and that the councilmen following her used it as well. Lisa Robinson also said she wouldn't repeat some of the words used - she was referring to Scort saying he was pissed off.
Perhaps schools need to close because busses can't get the kids there safely. Or maybe they are worried about having enough officers to protect the schools/busses. If rioters are actually pulling people out of cars there is no way I'm sticking my kid on a school bus.

Really Hogan?
Baltimore deserves peace and safety in their communities? I agree. So have they yet said how it happens someone has their spinal cord get 80% severed while in police custody? Or only some communities deserve peace?
Maybe if they actually addressed what happened would it help?
In the BBC's report on the psychology of looting, criminologist John Pitts says that looting makes "powerless people suddenly feel powerful" and that is "very intoxicating." "The world has been turned upside down. The youngsters are used to adults in authority telling them they cannot do this or this will happen. Then they do it and nothing happens," he says.
