I was confused also. Maybe "police" are patrol cops and homicide gets some sort of respect? it isn't clear what he told homicide. He does say when they got to the station, he overheard an office say Gray had no pulse. If I am getting the timeline right, 2nd guy was picked up at 8:59 and drove straight to the station, Gray had no pulse, but an ambulance wasn't call till 9:24.
So he says they went straight to the police station. Was he the guy picked up at this mysterious fourth stop?? I am having trouble keeping all of this straight.
There were four stops total. The previously unreported stop occured second. People are calling it fourth, as in "a fourth stop now being reported".

Who's on first?
Yes. Stop 1 - put on leg irons Stop 2 - previously unreported, "a 4th stop" Stop 3 - pick up this passenger Stop 4 - police station
I'm not sure at which stop they report to have picked Freddie up off of the floor and put him back on the bench, still without a seatbelt.
And I'm not sure the difference between homicide and the police.
I think he's saying he heard Freddie bang around for 4 seconds.
My speculation: He was probably asked, "Do you think it was his head?" and he answered, "Maybe." Which would be enough for them to put in their reports that he heard Freddie banging his head.

He didn't have a pulse but no one told that to the medics being called. If "he did it to himself" then there was no reason to be dishonest unless they wanted him to die.

Exactly. It also lays the groundwork for a possible trial. "Were you lying then or are you lying now?"

The head banging also could be the noise from jostling around. If he was already injured badly and didn't have the ability to prevent his body from being jostled around in the back, his head would be hitting things.
Ugh...the entire picture is so gruesome that regardless if how it went down, I feel sick just thinking about it. That poor man.
Laurence O'Donnelll's got an expert on right now that is explaining in very competent scientific and medical terms why the idea that Grey killed himself by thrashing into a bolt is a load of garbage. It's a great interview.
