I went to Yale. I have no problems telling people that - I loved college and wouldn't do it differently if I could. It is rather annoying to hear over and over again "Oh, you went to Yale. You must be smart" (um, yes? I guess?) or as an adult "Oh, you went to Yale. Why the hell are you a teacher??" (as though I should be a banker or a lawyer or a doctor) but I imagine people get similar reactions about everything.
I honestly wouldn't realize that I was supposed to be impressed with Duke. I don't have even a general idea of college rankings outside of "Ivy" and "Everywhere else." Also, if someone told me they went to school in Connecticut or something coy like that, I don't think I'd realize that I was supposed to assume they went to Yale. I read this article on Slate a while ago, and it was the first I'd heard that it was a "thing" to downplay your school: www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/05/30/harvard_grads_say_i_went_to_college_in_boston_and_call_it_the_h_bomb_get.html
When I moved to NC, I was quickly indoctrinated to the college basketball scene. Most of the engineers here graduated from NC State and thus hate UNC. Most of the non-engineers are UNC fans and hate State. However, they are united in their hatred of Duke.
I thought Duke was only a basketball school. Never even heard of them having a LAW school. Pshhh.
That's all I think of when I think of Duke. I had no idea they were an "important" school. I'm from the West Coast, so unless it's Ivy, everything else is just way across the country.
P.s. that's obnoxious as fuck too. "I, hee hee, went to school in New Haven." "Oh really? Clearly you didn't major in functional non-condescending life skills."
My brother went to college in New Haven. At the University of New Haven. There's seriously like 5 or 6 colleges in New Haven, CT. I just assume people went to Southern Connecticut State University when they say that.
I had a boss who went to Puke the year Butler (my alma mater) played them in the NCAA basketball finals. His arrogance was ASTOUNDING.
And then Butler almost, ALMOST beat them. At least it was 'embarrassing' enough for him that I didn't have to hear about it the next day.
Dude - get over yourself. I also pointed out once that Puke's basketball program $$ was some ridiculous multiple of the Butler program cost, and that Butler's student athlete reputation and graduation rate were far superior.

Exhibit A, folks. Exhibit A.

I'm just saying you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. If you're all "I went to Haaarvaaaad", you're a pretentious snob. If you downplay it, you're a pretentious snob. #firstworldproblem
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
A good friend of mine I work with regularly wears her "Harvard- The Michigan of the East" t-shirt. Most of the people we work with went to Harvard, and they don't know how to respond to that shirt
