This thread also demonstrates that people have this false perception that there are lots of gun control laws out there, that you can only carry a gun if you've gone through background checks and training, that people who have guns also know how to use them and have had safety instruction. It's not true. It may be true in a few states, but it's not true in the vast majority of states.
I really think that if more people actually knew just how lax our gun laws are in this country - that it's perfectly legal to sell your gun to a complete stranger in a parking lot who may or may not be a convicted felon, who may or may not have gotten out of a mental hospital that morning, or that in at least one state, a 16 year old can carry a concealed weapon without a permit and without any sort of parental permission - they would have a different opinion about guns in America.
Yes. One of our local newspaper reporters actually wrote an article a couple of years ago about how he got his concealed carry permit. All he had to do was take an online course. This man had never even touched a gun before but was issued a CC permit for a firearm. I'm sorry, but that's scary.
Good intentions, responsible gun owner, EXACTLY the kind of situation that people carry concealed for. But 1. he still couldn't stop the mass shooting and 2. he nearly shot more innocent people.
Again though, not everyone who has a gun is going to use it. My husband wouldn't use it unless there was direct bodily injury imminent to myself or our daughter and nothing else is working (flee/hide/etc). He's not just going to start shooting at the aggressor with people all around who could be injured.
But how am I supposed to know if I see a stranger carrying a gun if they're a good guy with a gun or a bad guy with a gun? Honest question. And how am I supposed to know if they're well enough trained to use their gun correctly if they accurately perceive a threat and use it. And if they aren't going to use it for a perceived threat then why are they carrying it to begin with?
Between this, the shrill OMG THIS IS WHAT REPUBLICANS WANT in the Duggar thread, to all republican candidates are whackjobs who want women to carry rape babies to all the other threads that make it completely impossible to have a rational conversation on anything of substance around here, I need another break.
A huge long ass break from the echo chamber that is this fucking board.
So then go. You keep saying this and complaining about this board and how you haaaaate the political discussions because people don't argue the way you want them to and everyone is so meeeeeean to Republicans. So why do you even read them?

Will you still attend the Black People Meetings though? I am selfish so that's really all I care about, LOL!!!

We just need to put on our big girl panties. #actualadvicereceived
I'll tell you what I'm NOT going to do. I'm not going to spend my days being fearful that someone next to me in the checkout line as a gun on them. They probably do. That is out of my control. It doesn't stop me from living my life without fear though.
I'm not terrified that the person next to me in line has a gun.
In a state like this (at least, out of the big city) I wouldn't be surprised.
...but I don't FOR A MINUTE think it makes me more safe. As a matter of fact, I'm sure that it makes me less safe. That's not based on some irrational fear of a hunk of metal, but is instead based on the actual outcomes from actual situations.
And that means that, one thing I'm going to try to do is NOT patronize businesses that allow this kind of tomfoolery. Again, though, I live in an area where I have many options. I can blow off the Kroger-owned grocer because there's another a mile up the road. I don't know the answer for those in more rural areas, I really don't.

Conversely, why is there pretense that this is an open forum for discussion and alternate perspectives? Anyone can answer. Because while I don't vote GOP, I can definitely see why those who would or do don't bother with threads on here. I stick to randoms when I can get here, aside from anomalies like today.

I never once said that guns make me feel safe. They do not. That is why I don't have one. I don't like seeing guns anywhere. They make me highly uncomfortable. If I want to not patronize businesses that allow people to bring in their guns, then I need to move to another state or establish a self-sustaining homestead. Neither scenario is going to happen.

I still don't understand what it is, exactly, that those who are complaining want. Stop saying bad things about Republicans? Stop having those opinions? Stop getting upset or passionate about certain issues? In this thread, for example, where are the specific posts that are a problem?
This board is an echo chamber because only liberals post. So my solution as a conservative is, to complain about it and not post. Okay?

so we are doing this again? its been a while since the last one, yes?
also, please name me a time outside of the primaries of 2008 that there was a strong GOP/Con presence on the board? i am sorry the board and GBCN seems to be more liberal/Dem in perspective, but it seems after almost 8 fucking years to be the case.
Yes we are doing this again just as we do gun , abortion, feminism threads all the time. It's a reasonable question and/or statement. For the record you guys know I am pretty liberal( well except when I hate people) however if this board kept having threads like the one when you guys were all saying it was cool for that teacher put the black girl out of class for haircare product smell I would be saying the same thing.

I can't name that, and I think it's precisely because the board is loudly more liberal/Dem and that's the way the majority wants it. When you have phrases akin to "all Republicans are fine with rape" getting thrown around often, without an opposing effect happening against Democrats, I think you've got a board which should be called Current Events and Liberal Politics.
Which is fine. I'll still participate in threads because I like people here. But just be (generally all) honest that this board is primarily for liberal fist-bumping and dissecting any conservative or even not-so-left viewpoint with concerted criticism.
Yup, which I can't fully understand b/c I haven't really read the Duggar thread and I thought the abortion threads were pretty kumbaya in that most everyone in those agrees with each other since they are primarily 20-week+ bans recently. But I can see that this place does get polarized - I mean, I posted that funny quiz on how liberal you were.
Plus, most of the democrats I know own guns and many own handguns. Doesn't mean I won't speak my mind to them as much as any other political party. I fault the NRA more than any political party - they are their own beast.

I think people complaining want civil discourse minus the "Fuck you if you don't agree with me" tone. It's been pointed out by many not just the Cons. Just as folks have the power to ignore posts that bug them folks can ignore the posts where people express their frustrations.

OMG I'm so glad I came in here.
I have never been called "shrill" before. WOOT.
I don't know who this is that deactivated, but I'm hoping someone will tell me.
I won't even go into any Duggar thread as I don't want to hear anything about them. I know that although I have many opinions on many of the threads here, I know exactly how they will go if I express them, so I don't.
I do like this board because I do know there are many very intelligent posters here, and I also like to read and learn about different sides to an argument/opinion.
In regards to this thread, I just don't get the argument that everyone legally carrying a gun is crazy so "I (or I will teach my kids to) will go up and yell/tell these people how I feel." I am all for strict gun laws, and MA (where DH owns guns) has many strict laws, even if MA had open carry (which will happen when pigs fly) DH would never do it. He does carry a concealed weapon at times. However, if what these people are doing is completely legal I have not problem with it. Plus, many people already carry a concealed weapon and you don't know about it.
Thank you for this post.
I don't think everyone legally carrying is crazy (although I do think anyone who carries an AR-15 or other rifle like that into an airport or grocery store has some major issues). But the problem is, you really have no way of knowing if any given carrying stranger *is* crazy or not. That's what's so frightening. And that's why we need stricter laws around who can carry, where they can carry, and what you must do to get a carry permit. I find it insane that in my state, you don't need to even demonstrate an ability to properly load and fire your weapon in order to get a CCW permit.
I think there are really a lot of common sense gun laws that most reasonable people, pro-gun and anti-gun could agree on if we could have that conversation without being drowned out by the NRA.
There are certain threads I can't go into anymore because it makes me want to pull my hair out. Gun threads are one of them. I don't agree with the majority of the board, and it will end badly for all involved if I really lock horns with someone. So I just don't engage.

Ditto. I read so much more than I post and most of the time I tell myself that it is not worth it to engage. I can't go into threads about Israel/Middle East because I don't want to turn into a mega bitch and end up saying something I'll regret.
We weren't really talking about gun control anyway.
And I was just about to like you last post about wanting less guns... I thought it was sort of coming to a natural end in here.
The thread wasn't about gun control. The thread was about reaction to public gun carriers. It was coming to a natural end and it's moved away from that with the deactivation. It's kind of on the why-we-can't-have-nice-things trope.
I don't know why my comment above would keep you from liking my post about wanting less guns. I think we're misunderstanding each other in this thread. I'm sorry for that. I don't think you and I disagree about guns as much as you may think we do.
I think that somebody who feels the need to carry a weapon into a grocery store (when they aren't LEO or security on the job) is doing so because of their issues, their fear, their problems.
I think you've hit the nail on the head as to why the fear exists. If you automatically assume anyone out of uniform with a gun is ready to go postal, it makes sense that you (general you) would avoid them like the plague, avoid that venue like the plague in case they return, and teach your children to do the same. Because for a while we had at least one daily thread about a gun incident of violence so we could all perpetuate this fear against every other completely normal person who carries responsibly and exercises their legal right to do so.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: not every person without a uniform who owns/carries guns is a quack ready to remove you from this earth.
Yes, this is true.
But here's the thing. We make all sorts of judgments about people who do things that we perceive are rude and insensitive. Some guy walking around Kroger with a naked lady on his shirt. We assume he's an asshole. Maybe he's a nice guy. Maybe he is an awesome guy. But people are in there with their kids, and they don't want to see that shit. If you don't give a flying fuck, you are kind of an asshole. Or let's take another example. Let's say you are breastfeeding. I think it's great that there's more awareness being raised about it, and that steps are being taken to ensure women can nurse in public. But most women know how to do it discreetly. I'm not talking about using a blanket or anything, I'm just talking about quietly feeding the baby in a dignified manner. If a woman was sitting in starbucks and took her boob out and then just started fumbling around with it out on full display, making small talk, etc while getting ready to feed the kid, we'd all be like, "WTF lady?" You don't even have to be all "ewwwwww boobs gross" to think, "what is wrong with her?"
Same with guns. Normal, thoughtful people understand that guns make people nervous. Maybe some people are irrationally nervous. But lots of regular, normal people...they get a little caught of guard and uncomfortable when they were in a check out line behind some guy with a gun dangling off his belt. The guy could be the nicest person on the planet. But I see that, and I think, "what is wrong with you that you don't have the basic common courtesy to not walk around making people nervous?"
So i think everyone who does it is at least a little bit of an asshole. I don't think they are necessarily going to gun me down, but I do think they are an asshole. And if they are an asshole, then the fact that they have a gun makes me even more nervous, and I start wondering if they are the quack kind.

I think everyone does this... it's why certain people are known to get excited about certain topics more than others. Everyone has their own issues that they focus on and issues that they avoid talking about.
And I was just about to like you last post about wanting less guns... I thought it was sort of coming to a natural end in here.

Totally misunderstanding each other, b/c I meant that it seems fickle to go back to the gun talk at all, not gun control made me stop liking a thread. I really did agree with your last statement.
I don't know who this is that deactivated, but I'm hoping someone will tell me.
HBC
That's too bad.
I still stand by my post in the Duggar thread, which made clear I was talking specifically about those who want to ban abortion in the case of rape. Which I'm told repeatedly on this board is not all Republicans or even most Republicans.
But anyway, I'm sorry that people took it that way, and I hope she comes back to join us.
ESF I worship you and adore you but no you did not just make the breastfeeding example. They gon get you. That has the potential to derail this already shitty thread even more.
Abort mission. Abort mission. (Just not at 20 weeks or in cases of rape and incest and not without an ultrasound).
