I download most all of my books from the library. I also got free access to neighboring county libraries by visiting them and getting a card. Many will allow residents of nearby cities and counties use their library services including ebooks.
Another thing I do is when I search for an ebook and it isn't in there, Overdrive takes me to a page that asks if I want to request that my library order the book and check it out to me if they do. I always do this. I honestly put so many books on hold and I can't always recall which books I did this for, so I really have no idea if it has ever worked.
I just listened to the life changing magic of tidying up. Holy smokes it was amazing. I started my closet cleaning and posted the disaster on S&B. I haven't posted an after yet because it's no where near done. I did post my shies after. Everyone on here needs to read or listen to this book.
I just finished "The Orphan Master's Son" and had a hard time putting it down. On a lighter note, I'm now reading "Big Little Lies," which is entertaining.
I do most of my reading on my lunch break so I tend to get a lot of e-books so I can read on my Kindle. I usually just buy them on Amazon, since I will re-read most of them. There's a used bookstore in the basement of our building, so I get a lot of paperbacks there as well.
I always download books via Amazon onto my Kindle. It's so not cost effective but I like the instant gratification of it and reading is my only real vice.
Currently reading Jim Gaffigan's Dad is Fat. It's okay. Next up is The Royal We.
I just finished Charlie Glass's Slippers by Holly McQueen and started The Selection by Kiera Kass. I got them both from the library. I think someone on here recommended The Selection.
I am obviously in the midst of a light reading phase.
I only get ebooks now and I borrow them from The Free Library of Philadelphia. My subscription is free but they have a paid option for about $50/yr. They have a huge selection and it's worth it if you read a lot.

I use the library exclusively now. I'm there all the time with ds so I figured I'd use it for myself too. I used to buy and borrow from friends/cousins/sister. I have no interest in an e-reader.
I'm reading If I Stay. It's young adult. lol. didn't realize it until I got home. but its good.

If I read on my kindle I try to get them from the library. If the wait is really long (which it often is) or they don't have the book I will just buy it on amazon.
Right now I'm re-reading The Magicians and also reading Ready Player One.
I buy them from Amazon Kindle and read them on my phone or my kindle.
I have gotten books from the local library on my kindle, but I haven't had a lot of luck finding books I want from there, and there's usually a wait list for the popular books. I did the free trial of kindle unlimited, but like you said, there wasn't much to choose from.
I download through my library, or when I get gift cards for B&N (which I count on pretty much every birthday and Christmas), I'll get a few through the B&N online store. Cheaper than real books. I try to only buy books that I know I'll like.

I just finished Station Eleven for book club. I'm also reading The Boleyn Inheritance, and about to start At The Waters Edge (by the same author as Water for Elephants). I get almost all my ebooks from the library, only if the library doesn't have it and I really want it will I buy it on amazon.
I'm about 2/3 of the way through 11/22/63 by Stephen King, based on recommendations from the ladies here. I really like it, surprisingly, since I didn't think it was going to be my kind of thing. I'd definitely recommend it!
I'm not a Stephen King fan, but really liked this!

I'm reading On Immunity by Eula Biss. I like it so far. We're reading a YA book for book club, For Darkness Shows the Stars, and I cannot get into it. Should be a quick read though.
I have a huge wish list on Overdrive via our public library, and get my books from a combination of holds and just seeing what is available. I also have the problem of multiple holds being ready at once.
I do the library for my kindle, fortunately our library has a fairly good selection. I do get some hard copy books from the library when there is something I want to read that isn't available as an ebook yet.
I'm currently slowing making my way through a reread of A Song of Ice and Fire. I ended up buying them because 1) I really like them and 2) I couldn't make it through them before my library check out expired.
I do borrow a lot of books for my a Kindle through the Air Force library. I've heard that Philadelphia is known for a good online selection, and out of state residents can buy a subscription fairly cheaply.
I read mostly ebooks from the library, and occasionally buy from Amazon. My library books won't auto return if I turn off the wifi on my kindle.
I'm reading the new Stephen King - Finders keepers
Currently reading the latest Michael Conelly book. I also have Little Big Lies and Girl on the train in line to read next. Oh and Judy Blumes Summer Sisters. I thought it might be fun to read one of her adult books since I read alol her teen books back in the day. I too am going through the outlander series and surprised how much I like them.
I just finished the Laura Ingalls Wilder annotated autobiography and it was so good!! Brought the little house books to life!
Also just re-read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I loved that book in middle school and still do.
Re-read Divine Secrets of the YaYa sisterhood which was good too. I re read books a lot when I'm waiting for new ones from the library so I can drop them in the middle and spend time on the new book.
Elizabeth Smart's book was also good. Very simple language and a tragic story but an interesting read.
I'm on the waiting list for a ton of books from my library. DPL has a great selection and I joined our new library and they have good stuff too.
