Ever since then I keep thinking of that Nirvana song - "He's the one who likes all our pretty songs and he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun but he knows not what it means"
I was going to go to bed, but now I apparently will spend my Friday night listening to Nirvana. Thanks! No, sincerely, I haven't listened to them in too long.
I read in another interview that he likes their music but not necessarily their lyrics.

Yup, the response gif has already hit my fb feed. And, I am not a fan of that style of music, but whatever. What's he supposed to like....country, pop?
Maybe I need to drink more beer for this to make sense. Does he not listen to the lyrics? Remember that they played a concert for free at the last Democratic national convention? Supported Obama?
wasnt that concert more against the Iraq war than for obama?
I also think you can enjoy the music without loving the meaning behind the lyrics. Maybe that type of music really pumps him up, lol. Who knows.
LOL, I can listen to some seriously angry music when I work out with weights or am doing those motherfuckinggodawful planks. However, I won't be shooting cops, beating women, or starting a revolution any time soon. I just need some anger to get my head in the game.

Right? I listen to rap a lot when I work out, which I don't think is uncommon, lol. But I usually am not a fan of the lyrics in the sense that I agree with them 100%. I've been thinking about going to a barre class, but I'm worried the music will just be too tame for me, and relaxing.
Considering Tom Morello spoke and performed at the protests of the anti-union bill in Wisconsin a year ago, I highly doubt that Paul Ryan doesn't know who Rage is and what their political beliefs are.

Have you seen that ad where some long-distance runner listens to The Odyssey during one run? Who does this?? I need a beat that makes my head hurt to keep me motivated. I've actually left the gym without working out upon discovering that my headphones or ipod battery have died.
There are bands where the members have political preferences (U2, Dixie Chicks, etc). Then there is Rage. A band that turns leftist protest into music. You can't separate Rage from the leftist politics they sing about. It's an extremely odd choice for Ryan.
Btw? Did you know Tom Morrello went to Harvard and was a congressional staffer?
Tom Morrello play guitar in some of the songs on Springsteen's new album Wrecking Ball and appeared on Jimmie Fallon with Bruce playing guitar on Death to My Hometown. I have conservative friends who are Springsteen fans (that's how we all met) - I am forever puzzled by the cognitive dissonance that must be required. I could not love an artist the way I love Bruce (today will be my 50th show) and hate what he sings.

It was hilarious yesterday when Huff Po had an article about his response in Rolling Stone and one of the commenters said "why do you listen to these high school dropout dummies! They should shut up and sing" It was delicious when someone responded - Dude, he went to Harvard. Made my day.
I am the opposite of Ryan I think. I dont like Rages music very much, but I love what they do.
The reason it cant be put into "just a favorite band" category is because Rage is really a political message that happens to be a band. Kinda like Public Enemy. There aren't many bands like that, and they stand apart because what they have to say is more important than the music they use to say it, if you see what I mean? Like, Dixie Chicks might have a message, but they weren't formed just to put that message out there.
does everyone on here disect the lyrics of every song to decide if they like it or not??
I don't see why this is news... and that he "invited them to bash him" - as if that matters? Anyone who MIGHT care that they are bashing him, would already not like him... all it does is give the band more attention - it's not like it's making things worse for Ryan.

Yes. See above. I think it makes Ryan look ignorant to people who are passionate about music and people who know that Rage is overtly political. To name them as his favorite band very odd.

I simply disagree. I've been a musician since I was 7 and to me the single most powerful aspect of music is its ability to cut across social, religious, political, whatever lines. I'm able to listen to music containing lyrics with which I strongly disagree and still appreciate it and even love it. Rage is completely out of my political orbit, but I've worked out to it and enjoyed it because frankly, it's awesome workout music. If fitness is as important to Ryan as I keep reading it is, I can see how it might become his favorite.
I think there is a lot to pick apart with Ryan politically. Claiming he is ignorant because of his music preference is just nuking the fridge.

Best version of Ghost of Tom Joad is the version with Morello.
I read an article this morning that compared this to Christie and Springsteen - Christie apparently loves Springsteen but Springsteen refuses to meet with him, which I can understand. But heck I mean Reagan liked Born in the USA and wanted to use that....I think some Springsteen songs are more obscure in their point or its easier to miss the political meanings. Even Death to My Hometown is such a "jolly" song that I can see people not really listening to the words.
ETA: and with Ryan - meh. There are lots of reasons to dislike Ryan. Because he likes a band that completely disagrees with him politically isn't really one of them in my opinion. Maybe he just likes the beat and sound and ignores the lyrics.

I totally forgot that Rage covered Ghost of Tom Joad - I like the quieter version myself As for Christie - I hadn't heard that. I think Bruce should meet with him and let him know his positions on issues - who knows, they may have productive discussion. When Bruce heard that Reagan was using Born in the USA he immediately faxed over a cease and desist request (not from his lawyers as I recall - just from him). I agree to some extent on the obscurity issues. Born in the USA is misinterpreted a lot (that's why Bruce plays it acoustically when he does play it - at least most of the time).

did Rage cover tom joad? I haven't heard it. There's a version with Springsteen but Morello is performing with him. That is my favorite. But it's definitely Bruce. It's so good though.

I just think its loltastic.
ITA.
It's kind of like asking him who his favorite filmmaker is and being told it's Michael Moore.
...and having a bunch of people say, no, MM's politics don't have anything to do with it, and can't Ryan just appreciate a good documentarian?
RATM is a band that's all about it's political message. It's who they are. It's not like a band who's lead singer might occasionally wax political from the stage.
...remember Chumbawumba? They were highly political, too (anarchists, if I remember correctly), but they did "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down." Now, if Ryan was all, "that's the best song evah!" the band's political stances would be an interesting footnote.
Also, ITA with the PP who noted that it was a little tone-deaf to answer the question this way. He had to know that they would blast him.

No. Rage is their lyrics. They are a OWS protest rally set to music.
At one point they encouraged their fans to steal their CDs out of stores. Needless to say this wasn't well-received.
Well of course not. It takes more than a whiskey drink or a vodka drink to risk pissing the night away in jail for shoplifting that horrific waste of vocal chords.
