It's kind of like asking him who his favorite filmmaker is and being told it's Michael Moore.
...and having a bunch of people say, no, MM's politics don't have anything to do with it, and can't Ryan just appreciate a good documentarian?
I like this analogy. I just don't see how it's possible to separate Rage the band from Rage the message. Maybe if you just heard one of their songs once on the radio, but not if you listen enough to say they are your favorite band...
I don't care who he says his favorite band is, but Rage is a weird, hard to understand choice for a conservative politician.

Did he say they're his favorite band or he likes them? I can see liking a band and not agreeing with their politics but if he said they're his favorite then, yeah, he's an idiot.
I am the opposite of Ryan I think. I dont like Rages music very much, but I love what they do.
The reason it cant be put into "just a favorite band" category is because Rage is really a political message that happens to be a band. Kinda like Public Enemy. There aren't many bands like that, and they stand apart because what they have to say is more important than the music they use to say it, if you see what I mean? Like, Dixie Chicks might have a message, but they weren't formed just to put that message out there.
I just think its loltastic.
totally agree.
i don't dislike paul ryan for this, i just think it's odd.
It was a stupid thing admit. It would be as if Obama said Ayn Rand is his favorite author because he likes her writing style. And as others have pointed out, Ryan leaves himself wide open for Rage to respond.
I'm wondering if they're going to respond to this. Any sets they can climb ala MTV awards?
You'll think response is pretty funny if you're not a Ryan fan (and who knows, maybe even if you are! )
Excerpted: "I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings! Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta "rage" in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions." .
And where are you, Tom, Tim, and Brad? You bravely stood up for the dispossessed of the Third World, but in the current political climate, we are dispossessed in our own country. The erosion of our rights and liberties makes captives of us all. Do you no longer care? Did the machine defeat you?
I admit I'm not familiar with this band, but it sounds like I need to listen to it next time I need to get pumped up for a TSA grope.
I once had a crush on Michael Jordan. Same year I was Hillary Clinton for Halloween (3rd Grade, 1992). I dressed up all Bulls fanatic all the time. I had #23 socks. Later that year, I forgot how, I found out he was a registered Republican. My mom said, "Well sweetie, a lot of people with a lot of money are." That's also the moment I found out my grandmother was a Republican. It was a sad day. I still like my grandmother, but I have a hard time liking celebrities the same if I find out they're hardcore social cons. Fiscal cons I can handle, but I still lost my true love for Michael Jordan.
I love country, but I don't listen to Trace Atkins because he once said that he wanted to kick the ass of all the war protesters. While I personally don't protest once there are boots on the ground, I appreciate both the first amendment right to do so, and the general idea that there ought to be a lot of conversation before and after the military is used. I guess for someone who has always been into politics and music, I don't see how I can't pay attention to overt political messages in music.
I also just googled the RNC acts this year. I'm cool not listening to Kid Rock.
:-( :-( This may be the funniest thing I have ever read on this board. For real. Thank you for it.

Alec Baldwin is my all time favorite SNL host - and I don't like his politics at all.... I love many bands that sing about political shit I don't agree with . I just really fail to see how this is such a big deal. Maybe a little surprising- but NOT a big deal at all.

I don't think anyone is saying that it's a big deal, just that it's weird/hard to believe and that he had to know they were going to use this against him.
There are may things that can be said about Rage - but I cant believe we are on the third page, and no oe has mentioned how the British public deliberately bought as many copies of "Killing In The Name Of" just to stop some crappy X-Factor shit from being the Christmas No.1? Its genius. It has the line "Fuck You I Wont Do What You Tell Me" and every Christmas album from there on in has to have it next to all the other classics lol.
This made me happier than anything else that has ever happened in the UK ever.

At one point they encouraged their fans to steal their CDs out of stores. Needless to say this wasn't well-received.
Emmy clearly has never watched VH1's Top 100 Songs of the 90s.
I have--- and now I'm baffled. What's that other song that the dude/ band is all anti establishment but the video is in a mall or some shit?
I thought he might be reeve for awhile......
Oh yeah! New Radicals. I was so disappointed when I learned they were american and therefore couldn't be include Reeve.
And yeah, I think that bit of knowledge must have crowed out all thoughts of chumbawumba.
NO WAIT!!! I just looked at the list, and The chumb's not on there!!! Tubthumping is however, the #5 greatest one hit wonder of the 90's. I must not have seen that series.

Ah, that must have been the last one we had on. We constantly have one of those VH1 countdown shows on. They start to run together after a while.
I cannot believe this shit is even news, much less worthy of 3 pages of debate. This is so fucking stupid.
Yes I know my enemies They're the teachers who taught me to fight me Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission Ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite All of which are American dreams
