Thanks! I want to to purge so bad but have the urge to purge random things like my nightstand.
Any suggestions on what to do with knitted doilies from my grandma? She made them and I'll never use them for their intended use. I'm wondering if I could repurpose them.
Damn! I fully intended on having a raging Friday night of purging, but H ruined my plans by making me socialize. I think (hope!) I'll get through my clothes tomorrow during C's nap.
Also, a question: If you are decluttering by category, what do you do if you come across something in another category that you know for sure you'll get rid of. Do you purge immediately, or wait until you're doing that category?

I was watching The Property Brothers and they took old doilies and framed like two or three of them with a colored background to tie the room together. It looked really nice.
Or, wow, go to Pinterest. You can cover just about anything with a doilie (is that the singular?). Some of it looks beautiful and other stuff just looks like you've stuck a doilie on your lampshade.

Purge. No point in handling it twice.
I'm a big believer in the "purge by category" method, but even while I was still reading the book I walked around the house and grabbed things I knew I didn't want. May as well get the really easy stuff out of the way, literally, so there is less to do when you do pull out a whole category of stuff.

get a bunch of embroidery hoops in varying sizes, stretch the doilies across them and hang them in an arrangement on the wall.
I finally got around to posting my 2 double strollers, plus 2 cozy coupes for sale and they're all LEAVING MY HOUSE this weekend. Weeee! Plus, the $500 will be nice!
So far we have donated 2 minivans full of stuff and had to make 2 runs to the garbage dump....and I swear my house wasn't even cluttered! My biggest victory was finally saying goodbye to a giant stuffed bear my parents had gotten me 30 years ago. She was massive, like 5 feet tall, and made it through 4 different moves. Good bye and thank you Mama Teddy. My parents would have a heart attack if they knew...
love that secretary, @simpledog! h and i are hitting the end of the purging and we're staring at furniture we really don't like or just isn't working for us in our current space. we don't want to spend $$$ until we move into a house we own (or at the very least a bigger space than what we currently have), so i'm stalking craigslist and the like hoping to find a inexpensive replacement.
I just bought all new white bedding because my husband hated how the comforter got mushed up in the duvet cover and was using our ugly old one. And I haven't sold anything I have wanted to. But I love the new stuff. Also a photographer I love takes pics on all white bedding and they all reviews fab so I consider it an investment in my photography which I don't care about spending millions on.

I've made it through most of the book and most of the decluttering. Now I'm hung up on photos. I have so many photos and I can't seem to throw any away, so I'm taking a break.

photos are supposed to be done last. Too sentimental!

I know, I'm at the end! I think getting sentimental as we're moving isn't helping me. lol
Guys, I need to AW the fact that I've put laundry away immediately every week since decluttering my clothes. It's a much less painful chore now that everything fits nicely into their proper locations instead of being jammed into whatever free spots I could find.

i did photos in phases. some of it is more applicable to old photos taken with film, but it might help a bit.
1) toss anything that isn't in focus. 2) toss anything that is of a landscape or otherwise doesn't include people, especially if i can't identify where it was taken. 3) group similar pictures and toss any that are particularly unflattering. (you know when you do 3 takes to make sure at least 1 is good? get rid of the bad ones 4) toss anything that you have a digital copy of and don't plan to use it in a frame or photo album.
and 5) don't force yourself to get rid of pictures you still like. i have a few fuzzy, unflattering pictures from my childhood, but something about it speaks to me. so i keep it.
and if you have a ton of duplicates, but don't want to completely throw them away, consider sticking them in a cheap album for your kids to play with. i printed a bunch of pictures for R's first birthday, and really had no need for them once the party was over, but felt bad literally throwing away $30. it's probably his age, but R LOVES flipping through the book and pointing at himself and identifying his friends and family with him.

@tokenhoser, paper has been a thorn in my side this whole time. every time i thought i was done, i'd find another stash somewhere. i swear it multiplies in the closets while we sleep.
As I think about decluttering baby stuff, what should I do with an Ameda pump that I only used twice?
i see them for sale all the time on my facebook b/s/t pages. the next mom can buy replacement tubes, etc. if it's a closed system.
otherwise i would see if you can donated to a crisis pregnancy center or maybe a breastfeeding clinic/LLL type place? my local breastfeeding support group has pumps you can borrow.

Bottoms/swimsuits for donation! I also tossed more than half of my socks/underwear/bras that no longer fit, were falling apart, or are just uncomfortable.
I sold my giant fancy stroller, unexpired infant seat (it's legal here) and two bases. Wheee! I immediately bought dd1 a Britax Frontier clicktight so that I can move it around with ease and get rid of her terrible monster with hook latch. Dh organized the carport and built some shelves this weekend. He's currently dropping off 10 riding toys and a barbie jeep at my bff's (they were hers) and a baby pool and water table at the thrift store. I'll take a picture of the new carport once he blows the chicken straw out.
Only big thing left is the Spode Christmas China. @peggyolson do you want it? FFS.
I've got the car loaded to go to Once Upon a Child as soon as they open. Also taking a bag of change to the Coinstar to get rid of it. Still finding paper everywhere to recycle/shred.
Apparently my MIL isn't getting me the book for my birthday. She already bought me something despite her asking me what I wanted. She always does this. Asks what I want but gets me something else (that will likely end up clutter). Silver lining? We found the book at Costco today for $11! I'm psyched. Can't wait to start it tomorrow.
I'm excited to hit the clothes but I know I need to buy a few wardrobe staples before I'm willing to part with a bunch of things (that I hate anyway). It's also hard because I put away all my work clothes last year around this time when I was pregnant. At least I've gone through all my maternity and those are being consigned.
