I sold my giant fancy stroller, unexpired infant seat (it's legal here) and two bases. Wheee! I immediately bought dd1 a Britax Frontier clicktight so that I can move it around with ease and get rid of her terrible monster with hook latch. Dh organized the carport and built some shelves this weekend. He's currently dropping off 10 riding toys and a barbie jeep at my bff's (they were hers) and a baby pool and water table at the thrift store. I'll take a picture of the new carport once he blows the chicken straw out.
Only big thing left is the Spode Christmas China. @peggyolson do you want it? FFS.
how is your business coming? I am impressed you have time for all this decluttering. It is taking me FOREVER.
welp, looks like we're most likely moving to a new house that's smaller by at least 1/3. guess i'll be participating in here WAY MORE over the next month lol.
Only liking because I know how much you love to purge!

We hope to open in two weeks. Decluttering is actually my favorite stress reliever, so we've be tearing through it.

YES.
Awesome. I think I can get it all in a large flat rate box. Just pm me your address and I'll let you know as soon as I ship.

I really need to stop trying to purge when H is home. He keeps going through my toss bags and pulling things out. Apparently I'm not supposed to get rid of anything I ever wore when we first started dating (13 years and 30 lb ago). He is too sentimental - I'm going to have to sneak out to Goodwill when he's at work.
I'm currently up to 6 donation bags. I'm almost done with my clothes. I can't believe I had that many unwanted items laying around my closet!
Can I join? I didn't read the book, but I read this thread
I cleaned and decluttered my kitchen today. I got rid of so many rogue cups/travel mugs/plastic cups that DH collects and no one uses. And I also decided to get rid of all the sippy cups and go to take & toss, open cups, and Foogo cups (for school only). The drawer for N's cups was out of control and now it's so organized! I also cleaned out our pantry cabinet and got rid of expired food - way more than I thought was in there.
Random findings include breastmilk storage bags from almost 2 years ago lol.
timorousbeastie I know DH will be the same way! I have a pair of Coach shoes that he bought me that I've worn a handful of times that need to be sold but he will throw a fit. They are just collecting dust!

This thread inspired me today! I bagged up two big garbage bags of baby/toddler clothes to donate and one to take to the consignment store this week. The boys' dressers are practically empty! My closet's up next.

PSA: if you itemize your taxes, it is definitely worth the time to list our what you donate. Every single year I am amazed at how much "It's Deductible" (associated with TurboTax) says I can deduct for what I donate. Often, the tax savings is close to what I could get by consigning the item (and a lot less hassle).
One other thing I read a while back (I think on Flylady): when you give away your excess, you are making it possible for the item to actually get use. So when I start to get into "I might need this one day" mode, I think about someone who could actually use the item I am basically hoarding.
I am waiting to get the book from the library...number 3 on the holds list for the ebook and number 385 for the hard copy lol. So it looks like I will probably be reading the ebook soon, even though I prefer books like this in hard copy.
I've started purging my clothes and have 4 huge trash bags full of clothes. Included are some sweaters I've had since high school, so like 15+ years. I'm not done with the clothes purging either. Still need to go through my dressers.
I know from what you all have said that you are supposed to do one thing at a time, but I've also started going through my Monica closet because it is SO BAD. It's a small walk in closet that literally became a climb in closet. I have hoarded a bunch of home decor stuff that I "might want to use again someday" like candles and vases. I don't even like candles anymore and I have realized I much prefer a clean minimalist design without knick knacks, so all of this is going to go!
I packed up two big boxes filled with glasses and coffee cups that we never use and don't need (still have more than enough for when we have company). DH has now put them in the garage "just incase". Really?? I want it out of the house, not taking up more room in the garage.
I also posted DS's changing table on FB (he's been potty trained for a year and it's just been sitting in his room). I'm really liking getting rid of crap
How do you handle donating kid stuff if you aren't 100% sure if you are having another?
We borrowed most of the big stuff (swing, bouncer, etc) from friends the first time so that is my plan for hypothetical #2. Also, when I really got into my local Facebook b/s/t I realized I could buy all of that and then resell it when I'm done for the same price.
Smaller things like clothes and toys I kept my absolute favourites and unloaded the rest. i revisit that pile every season because some things I'm sentimental about when he first outgrows it, but in a few months it's replaced with new favourites.
eta: i also think there is an element of knowing your personality and accepting it. if you chose to have another 2-3 years from now would you be SO thankful you saved everything and don't have to buy it again? or do you enjoy shopping and would want to purchase several new things for the new baby anyway?
i am definitely the latter, especially with clothing. even if i had everything i needed i would still buy some new stuff for the second kid. i like shopping. i love bargain hunting. i know i'd always pass over the hand me downs for the new, bright, shiny items so why bother storing things i don't love only to reject them years later? there are definitely some things i saved and i would love to see a sibling wear the same funny onsie or whatever, but just another shirt from carters that is now play condition at best? no thanks.

I haven't technically taken anything out of my house yet...but I did box up 2 years worth of M's clothes. They're just going into the basement for storage for now, just in case we decide to go for #2. I did manage to sort out somethings I didn't like & those will be donated or sold.
I have started various piles of things that need to be donated, hoping to get those out of my house this week.

Between my clothes and the kids' clothes, I have 7 garbage bags of clothes to donate! My entire trunk and passenger's seat is stuffed.
I was going to take some of the kid stuff to consign, but all the rules for buy back at my local store were stressing me out and definitely not sparking joy so I'm dropping everything at the veterans' thrift down the street and calling it a day. Next up, books!
Don't forget animal shelters are usually in need of old towels and blankets. I just took two garbage bags full of old comforters and towels to our local shelter.
I took three more garbage bags out of my closet and drawers last night -- down to just my favorites. H is doing his tonight. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
i'm really interested to see how everyone is a year from now. i should put it in my calendar to post a check in next summer, lol. our house feels so light and fresh, i never want it to get so filled up again. so far we have been really conscious about purchases, i hope it's a lifelong change.
Woot! Got through ALL of my clothes. I'll have to convince H to deal with his next, but I'll be moving on. I'm most dreading the paper step.
A few random questions based on items I found in my closet.
What do you do with old cell phones?
How do you organize your closet? I used to do by color (roygbiv), then category within the color. Today I rearranged to be the other way around. I'm not sure how I'll like it, but it's also nice to have all of my sweaters together, etc.
glitzy07 - There are women's shelters/women's orgs that refurbish them to be functional for 911 calls. There are other charities that collect them and make money off recycling the parts. Google "recycle cellphones (your city)" and see what pops up.
I organize my closet by type - short sleeve t's, long sleeve t's, button downs, skirts, dresses, etc. within those I organize light to dark, but the colour in my wardrobe is minimal. It's mostly a gradient of black.

I also used to do color then category, but now do category then color. It's easier to find things that way based on the weather/temperature/occasion.
