The projected high here is 99 today. Some years I see if I can go all winter without heat. I don't think I've quiet made it yet but turning off the a/c will be a relief.
We turn it on whenever we're cold and putting on socks and sweaters isn't enough. I don't know what temp that is, but I would guess it's somewhere in the 50s. But if you're cold at 63, and dressing more warmly isn't helping enough, go ahead and put it on. I don't get having a set date before which you won't turn on the heat. I see FB posts all October long that say "I will NOT turn on the heat before November 1." Dude. Why.
This reminds me that I need to call and schedule a furnace cleaning, so thank you for that!
Sitting here in the family room, waiting for pizza to be delivered and 3 doe raced through our backyard. We do get a lot of deer but it's still always fun to see them
My crazy grandfather forbade hear before October 15 so naturally my crazy family carries on his legacy by doing the same.
I think I am your crazy cousin. I never put on the heat before 10/15, November if I can help it. Until then, blankets and sweatshirts. It's not even a money thing, it's just straight up denial.
Strangely enough, I have no idea what the temperature is in my house right now, but I know that it is chilly. We don't have central air, and we have electric baseboard heat which is controlled individually in each room. So, you can get it to a temperature, but no where do we have a thermostat that tells us what the temperature actually is. We just bought our house so finding this little oddities is fun.
Another one? We have a light switch in our bedroom for the light on the back patio LOL
We still have a couple switches I can't figure out (11 years in this house). We have a light switch in our laundry room, near the back of the house, that turns the light on on the front porch. So does the switch by the front door so sometimes we turn it off in the laundry room by accident.
Omg, some of you are badasses! It was 50 outside today and my condo is down to 70. I'm huddling under a blanket hoping that my building turns the heat on soon. I'm always the first person who requests that it be turned on. I'm a wimp.
Update: we ended up turning it on last night, coincidentally enough. It was 58 degrees in the house. I can't imagine waiting almost another full month just on principle! Brr.
I caved and turned it on last night when it was 67 in the house. I might have held out longer, but we have a tenant on the same heat system. I don't want her to be cold.
You people that set your heat in the low 60's must have a different internal temp than me. I would be freezing!
Our house holds heat really well. This morning it was 65 but I turned on our gas fireplace for a bit (which shouldn't even hear the house and is in a supposedly energy inefficient two story great room) and within an hour it was up to 67. It's in the 40s still outside.
Ha! I've never held out. I hate being thermally uncomfortable (lol). Our thermostat is at 72 all winter. I'm in CO & the inside of my 115yr old house is still 75 so we haven't turned on heat yet. I just took the fan out of the window a couple days ago.
Thermostat said 59 when I woke up this morning. I was so cold. H told me yesterday that he had an 8 am tee time and it was supposed to be 39. So, I think when I woke up it was probably warmer than it was most of the night. I took a warm bath and had some tea and hat warmed me up completely. I'm going to continue!

We don't use the heat at all throughout the year at night (admittedly it never drops below 30* outside here). IMO there is nothing better than a giant down duvet+quilt+flannel sheets in a meat locker of a bedroom. LOVE IT. I'd suggest some good, warm bedding if you don't already have it
Getting out of bed is a bitch, but when it gets cold enough (below 60 in the mornings), I set the heat to kick on 15 minutes before I get out of bed, but keep the vents in the BR closed. Warms up the bathroom for my shower without making me swelter in my bedding nest.
No, my bedding is fine--sleep is one of my favorite hobbies, so my bed is very well-appointed. It rarely gets below 30 here, but I'm anemic, so I do get really cold. I couldn't handle no heat throughout the winter even in flannel pjs and cozy socks (neither of which I had last night). Sometimes, I wish I could because I sometimes wake up stuff my from the heat, but I cannot.
When I finally climbed out of bed, I realized I didn't have any of my slippers in the bedroom and when I went to use the restroom, my toes on the floor...ugh.

heat hasn't been on. we are still running our AC for part of the night, and it's been in the high 30s-low 40s outside. it's too noisy in NYC to open the windows while we sleep and we like it chilly.
Woke up to 1" of snow on the ground Sat AM. The furnace is on auto - and we were toasty at 70 inside. 70 during the day and 65 at night is our standard for comfort indoor temps.

We got heated floors on the bathroom and we just set the floors to start heating up 20 minutes before our alarm now. It's glorious.

Well, I made a rookie mistake and slept in silk pajamas last night. I'm not sure if the cold woke me up or something else, but when I woke up, I was cold. So now I've been up since 6, rather than my preferred 8:48. The appeal is beginning to dissipate!
I had one furnace set to 68 and my oil backup furnace set to 71. I had five layers on (shirt, two sweaters, and two jacket-style sweaters) and I was still freezing. We've been using the heat for awhile now. I hate winter.
MM, I love you, but why do so many of you insist on being cold in your own home? I don't get it. I understand wanting to save a little money, but come on! Is it really worth it to be cold to save a few dollars?
