Solidarity, sister! My other kids were in the crib until they were 2.5-3 years old. Not DS2, he's trying to push me to an early grave. I've had to start locking DS2 in his room by switching out his bedroom knob and putting the lock on the outside. I made sure his room was safe, outlets are covered, dresser strapped to the wall, etc. and then I have to hope for the best when I put him to sleep. I lowered the front rail on the crib so he can get in and out without having to climb down so far. We purchased a bed and just need to get it put together and purchase a mattress but the lowered rail seems to be helping, for now. One bright side is that I get to decorate his "big boy room" and that has been fun for me. That is about the only benefit but at least there is a small silver lining.
Maybe at least you'll get lucky and have a nice honeymoon period with the big bed. DS1 stayed in his bed and slept like a champ for the first week or two. And then...
Not to detract from your sorrows, but preschool has cribs? I've only ever seen cots at the 3 preschools DD attended and the many others that we toured.

I'm sorry! I was freaked when C started this too, but moving him to a big bed has actually gone REALLY smoothly (knock on wood). Hope the same is true for you!

Yeah, it sucks. DD never showed any interest in climbing out until she did one morning at 22 months. It could have been a fluke but we decided we might as well convert the crib to a toddler bed that same day. Her furniture was already all attached to the walls so we didn't have to do that that same day, which helped.
Bedtime and naptime were inconsistent at best for a couple of weeks after the switch. A couple of nights, she brought her pillow, blanket and toys to the door and fell asleep on the floor by the door. Eventually she stayed in bed and it's been fine ever since. We have childproof knobs on the inside but she figured those out so now we lock her in with a hook and eye lock outside the door since gates are useless for us too.
Both my kids did this at only 18 months and I was totally prepared to be team crib for life. My sisters kids slept in a crib until 2.5 minimum. I'm sorry, it's a total ripoff!!
I'm not sure if this will work with your crib, but we literally put the mattress on the ground. It fits just right, and now his head barely comes above the top rail. I figure it buys us a while!
Do you have an Aldi nearby? They just had a toddler air mattress at ours the last few weeks. It was toddler bed sized (more or less) and had raised edges all the way around. It was $25. That might help for the hotel.
Some kids climb out once and then don't do it again for quite awhile. Maybe you could get really lucky?
My kid is a climber. She looked like she was going to climb out the first time at 18 months. She is now like a million months (30ish) and she hasnt climbed out yet. There is hope. Yesterday she threw her leg over a couple times when we were reading books and i told her to stick it back in. #crib4lyfe
Ugh....now i see she did it at daycare. Your screwed.
I would still just tell her to stop. Put her legs back in.
LoL, I just ignored her at home yesterday bc I figured it was better to not bring attention to it (she still laughs hysterically at me if I raise my voice). She stopped when I came back in and offered to get her down.
This was yesterday morning and she didn't attempt at nap or bed (or at least wasn't successful OR knows how to get back in, lol).
She is secretly climbing out and doing stuff while you sleep.
I picture her making a scene for Santa like buddy elf.
I shouldn't joke. It's a problem but hopefully she just stops.
