They suggested anti anxiety meds and possibly a basket muzzle. I didn't even know dogs could have anti anxiety meds
My dog is a very anxious girl not much older than yours. She's about 6. We had multiple anxiety related incidents but the worst was when she lost her shit one day after hearing fireworks, and ATE A WALL.. and a door. She tore her gums, broke teeth and nails out, bled everywhere. It was not quite as expensive so I won't say I get it 100%, but I do get that awful feeling of being at a loss, unable to help them or keep them safe. Getting her to a trusted vet, putting her on anti anxiety meds and crate training was an absolute life saver. They weren't *too* expensive and they did so much good for her.
I hope your sweet girl heals well, and you find a reliable, fantastic vet to make sure she stays healthy. ((hugs))
Jojo's vitals are good this morning, she is awake and alert. Not eating yet but they don't expect her to yet. They are going to do an exam around 10am.
Thank you all so much for caring and being amazing. I am going to see if I can go visit her tonight, they keep telling me due to the severity and weight loss that they are amazed she has hung on so long so I want to go to lift her little pup spirits and cheer her on!
I'm glad to hear she is looking good this morning! One of my mom's dogs is on anti-anxiety meds. It has really helped her a lot, hopefully it will do the same for your sweet girl.

Yay! I'm so happy, just be prepared for them to not let you see her. When my dog was in the hospital they wouldn't let me see him until it was time to come home because they didn't want him to get upset & stressed when I left.

This is what I would be worried about. I dont want to cause her more stress or make her anxious or do anything that might hinder or slow down the healing process. She is my shadow and howls her heart out when she cannot see me

Tricky, my sister's dog eats doors when he isn't on Prozac. It is human prozac to Chase The Dog [Last Name]. Seriously worked wonders for them. So don't sweat it -- the anti anxiety meds are an easy fix and will help her tons!
I'm glad she's doing well! Medication is definitely an option for anxious dogs. If the vet who was letting her starve also never mentioned meds, they really suck and should not be practicing. I hope your next vet does a better job by her.

The previous original vet wouldn't even entertain xrays. The er vet told me that xrays would have possibly picked up the stuff in her stomach. They asked me if the vet even offered xrays and he didnt.
I am so angry with him. He wanted to do blood work ASAP and I kept explaining to him and asking about an obstruction and he assured me that it was her pancreas and that we just have to wait and see. When she wasn't getting better, he kept prescribing med after med.
I feel so guilty I didn't over ride his diagnosis sooner but I trusted him because people had recommended him.
I paid him $500+ to almost kill my dog
I told the er vet to not give him any information (they relay what is going on with your normal vet) because he will never touch my dog again.

Tricky, I am so glad she's doing well. Sorry for any confusion above. I love my dogs like family, and I understand your pain. We need Obamacare for pets (I'm sure someone will argue why this is not a good thing. Kind of kidding.).
After all this, I wish they had more options for insurance. The kind I had on her when I first got her was one that covered emergency and regular vet visits.
I took it off because my husband had lost his job and we couldnt afford it. And then never put it back on.
After this? She is getting it put back on.
But i feel like vets dont talk to you about it. Sure they sometimes have pamphlets but they dont stress the importance.
They said her one level of protein is low and they gave her medications to try to help but they are unsure.
She said it is up to 5k by now and by tomorrow will hit 5,600.
I have no idea what to do anymore
They want to keep her until monday
OMG, I'm so sorry. I hope she improves.
I was going to mention that an affordable option is Banfield (inside Petsmart) if you have one nearby. We pay ~$140 / month for all four of our pets, but it covers so much. I think they get a bad rap, but I've had very few negative experiences in my five years of dealing with them. And that plan has saved us a tremendous amount of money.
It's the vet clinic that is inside most Petsmarts. The ones near us are open 7-7 m-sa and 8-6 sunday so unless your pet gets sick on a holiday or after hours, they can see them that day. I drop our pets off usually when they are sick (did so this morning with my dog) and pick them up when I get out of work.

We have pet insurance on our beagle, but to tell you the truth I am not sure it's worth it. Ours only covers accidents and illness, but they do everything possible not to cover stuff. If we needed a major surgery I am sure they would try to get out of paying for the whole thing somehow. Additionally, you'd still need the money up front because it's a reimbursement plan. We will keep the insurance, because my H insists on it, but it's not as good as it seems.

Giant hugs.
I had Banfield for my dogs and I loved them. I'm pretty sure it only covers preventative maintence though.
ETA- I'm sorry about your pups situation improves and you get good news soon.

For the most part, yes. It includes vaccinations, free office visits, blood work, discounts on procedures and meds. There are different levels, though. Two of mine are on the highest level that includes urinalysis, x-rays, free dental (and since this is under anesthesia, we save the dentals until the end of the year in case they need other procedures done under anesthesia.)
I don't want to derail the thread, but just wanted to let you know what it includes, @trickybob, in case you're interested.
I did put the go fund me back up, i dont know how to edit it or update it though to reflect that the surgery has been done and paid for but they are still taking life saving measures.

I'm sorry you're not out of the woods. Bowel surgery is no joke. I had a bowel perforation and emergent surgery. No post surgical complications but I wasn't even started on water until post op day 4.
I second the recommendation for anti anxiety meds and crate training. Our girl is on generic human meds and we use the prescription savings program through Duane Reede/Walgreens so it's like $10-20/mo. I'm glad you're getting her back on the insurance. We have a catastrophic only plan which is pretty cheap.
1300 to keep her til monday where they can continue iv and medications.
That is on the high end.
Otherwise I bring her home tomorrow morning and we hope for the best without meds. They said they want to keep her and all this money was spent and if I took her home tomorrow it may have been for nothing.

is she still at the er vet? when cindy had bloat, we paid out the ass for the 1am surgery, and the picked her up when she was more stable at 8am. we drove her straight to our regular, non-er vet who held her for 2 more days for way less money.
we had to sign a form that we knew taking her out of the er was a risk, but we essentially just acted as a doggy ambulance between facilities.
eta: I know you are dumping your current regular vet, but maybe you can find an office that will work with you. it being the weekend will complicate it though.
She is still at the ER vet and they have been amazing with her. She has a kennel right next to the person who happens to be working their shift and is looked after so well.
They charged me $370 for the ultrasound that showed all of this, when my first vet was going to charge me $500-600 (but "she doesn't really need it, it is pancreatitis!" ass.) and when he said I could look else where, I found about the same cost at other vets but they also then wanted me to pay an exam fee, first time patient fee, and office fee.
I feel like I really lucked out at this er vet, with how nice they have been. It has been outrageously expensive but I fear it would have been more so through a normal vet after comparing just the ultrasound price. They never charged an emergency fee, which I had to pay $200 just for walking through the doors of an ER vet years ago when I thought Jojo had a major problem (turned out it was a cough).

Wow! I missed the initial post but this is truly amazing. I wish your sweet pup continued improvement, and a big high five to those who helped. How awesome. ❤️
