I don't have a problem with a kid having a tablet (see my kid playing with my kindle fire all the time). Its just that I don't even have an ipad, so I am not buying one for a 7 year old. I don't judge others who do though.

Omfg and the PARENTING WARS ARE ON!
Who the fuck cares if sonrisa doesn't want her kid to have an iPad. Our posture and eyes are going to shit because we're so attached to technology. I mean, can't more kids just go play in the street?

Because of kidnappers, duh.
Ooohhh. Yeah. Kidnappers. My parents were like, "Run into the woods!"
DD's current ABA school and the elementary school she will attend next year use classroom iPads in all classes so it feel silly to be all 'no iPads for 5 yr olds' when she gets to use them at school and will do so next year as well.

So you're saying you'd prefer kids get hit by cars rather than having fun playing on their iPads?
I'd venture to say knowing how to navigate on a table is a necessary skill for school. They use them all the time in my daughter's grade school.
My kids don't have their own tablet.
They stole my kindle and in 5 minutes while I was in the bathroom figured out how to open their profile on it, open up Dinosaur train, play it, and skip the ones they didn't want to watch.
This is a classist thought -- if they are truly necessary for school they will teach kids how to use it in school. And my point above is that kids pick up on this crap SO QUICKLY. There are people who can't afford these things, let alone the principles behind them -- so I think kids are FINE in school without their own tablets or using them etc.
Jeezums. I'd also be really skeptical of tablet use in the classroom, in terms of wanting to know exactly how and when and why etc.
I didn't read the thread..but I just flat out say no. If they say Santa can bring, I say no. My girls have an ipad to share but that was a gift from MIL. Honestly I limit it a lot (only weekends sometimes) and id rather they stay off them, even in school. My DD4 got a lot of time on one when I was working (with her in tow) & yes she learned colors, shapes, numbers, letters at 2..but not worth the monster it created (cries/tantrum when i took it away).

I'm trying to figure out how my parents avoided this stuff. I think part of it was we were pretty much in a lower-middle class area growing up, so no one we knew had remote control cars or Barbie dream houses or whatnot. I know at one point we had a Sega Genesis, but that was a gift to my brothers from my aunt. Aside from that, the most expensive technology thing I ever got was a karaoke machine with a DOUBLE TAPE DECK. How jealous are you?!?
I think my parents just thanked their lucky stars I loved reading. LOL.

this just drives me insane. And yes, I know. Technology.
I don't disagree but it is what she knows and the world she is and will live in. At her ABA it is used for differentation, for example her fine motor skills are crap (she's getting OT twice a week) but in class after she has done handwriting they will have her practice tracing letters on a letter app using a stylus to continue working on it, it's a VERY non-preferred activity so the stars and stickers she gets on the app keep her motivated and get her to buy in to the whole writing thing. This is important because she loves to spell and will type or use her letters to spell out stuff but HATES physically writing.
Oh, about the appropriateness of an iPad - DD #2 knows her letters and numbers because of the Endless apps

My kids don't have an iPad. We have a Kindle Fire, which they share. I don't advocate having Santa bring one because everyone has one or because they "need" such an expensive present. That is not how we roll in our family. But I'm just relaying how it is in school. She's used one since kindergarten and by 5th grade, every child has their own (school supplied). They use them a lot.

Wait, aren't your kids in technology heavy fields of study? And receive laptops and video equipment for Christmas somewhat recently? I get that they were older than 5, but technology is really different than it was 10-15 years ago when your boys were 5. The iphone didn't even exist until 8 years ago.

And I thought I was doing Ellie (5.5) a disservice by not having a tablet for her already. (She's getting a kid kindle fire for Xmas). I also don't let her play with my phone but that's just because I'm selfish.
So my kids are the only ones who pout, complain, whine when I tell them to get off electronics? Virtually every time, the younger, the worst they act? And they get super lazy and really don't want to do chores, play outside if they can sit on their butts playing games, watching videos? They don't act like that when I interrupt coloring, Legos, dolls, ect. I don't hate tablets, I hate how my kids act after being on them.
I would not get my 5 year old (or my 6-8 y/o) his or her own device. We have an iPad, and they are allowed to use it sometimes, but it's mine. By calling it "theirs", I think it might give the impression that it belongs to them and they can use it whenever they want for whatever they want, and that's simply not true.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

My kid does this with most things. Transitions are not her strong suit.
The worst is when we have to leave friend's homes or gtg's on the street.
