Some of these responses make me scream bah hambug!
You do realize that having a iPad or similar item in the home is the norm nowadays. Especially since smart phones became the absolute norm in most homes. What is so bad with a kid wanting one and given into this want. I guess if you compare it to the other toys out there price isn't that expensive.
It's also a easy thing to take away or control since it's portable.
is it really the norm for all households or just ones privileged?
It could be both right? I see everyone with a smart phone nowadays. It no longer a big deal to have a smart phone as this is the wave of the future. I am sure there are exceptions.
Oh, do you really want to hamper your child's learning by providing them with a pre-fabricated fort kit instead of encouraging them to use their imaginations? Interesting.
I tell my kids that Santa fills the stockings and gives one or two small gifts because he's got to make sure all the kids all over the world get some gifts. Santa has never done the big gifts for our kids, I want full credit for the home run gift!
David really wanted an ipad for his birthday so we got one for his 7th birthday (ipad mini). It's not an issue at all. I'M the parent and if he sits on it for hours at a time, then that's my fault. He doesn't get to play on it during the weekdays but we let him play with it quite a bit on the weekends. I'm also fine with him having his "own" device. Yes, it's his, but he still has to ask to play on it and we do monitor it. He mostly watches Minecraft videos and Taekowndo videos. It's really not a big deal. I respect that parents think it's too early for their own child but the responses that imply that once they have one, you can't control how much they're on it are annoying. I'm still the parent!

I love Barbie. In Barbie world, there's no need to worry about how Barbie is going to get to the chairs on the the THIRD LEVEL of the camper, because Barbie will rise up like a magical phoenix to the chairs during play. Fantastic.
But the thing is huge and of course she can't pop it up by herself, so it's like 5 minutes of me opening everything up so she can play with it for 10 minutes.
Also, there's approximately 8000 tiny pieces of food and crap.

My dollhouse didn't need stairs because of this. So awesome.

See and that was something that annoyed me about my dollhouse. The stairs connected the first to the second floor but the their was just hanging out on it's own. I wanted a realistic layout. lol
I was saying in another thread that my parents love to give the kids the biggest gifts they can find. Last year they got sofia the barbie glam camper, and it is huge.
And yes, also 1 billion little pieces. As if I'm going to keep track of 4 tiny marshmallow roasting sticks. Then she's all "where's my marshmallows! How can I roast marshmallows on the fire?!".
I almost feel guilty for derailing this ipad discussion and into talk of Barbie camper vans and their possibly phallic accessories and other ginormous toys your kids will get/never get.
Get her something similar but at a price you feel is reasonable for a five year old. Tell her Santa's contract with Apple expired*.
Though she may never forget it. One year I desperately wanted a Barbie camper van (lol) just like a neighbor kid had. But it was a seventies toy and by the time I wanted one, I don't think they were even made anymore. That year I got a pink corvette for my barbies instead but it was a terrible substitute. I had to tie the extras on to the back since it was just a two seater.
*don't actually say that
It was this one. And I totally had it. RADDEST SANTA GIFT EVER! Now you have me online looking for one for my DD!
I have this! My grandpa found it at a garage sale when I was towards the end of my Barbie years, and cleaned it up for me. It mostly hung out at my parents' house until a year or so ago, when I brought it home for my daughter. She loves it!
As for the actual discussion, I don't care, I just love Barbies.

Almost. lol
Well, I love the camper van.
I do too. I'm totally getting one someday for my hypothetical daughter, enormous size and phallic chairs be damned.
