Omg. I am glad you guys were able to help her. Stay safe.
I remember when my mom and dad would fight when I was younger, my sisters and I would run to the neighbors to get help and no one would open their doors. .

I remember when my mom and dad would fight when I was younger, my sisters and I would run to the neighbors to get help and no one would open their doors. .
From our neighbors we learned about the original owners of our house. He was a doctor, immigrated from another country. The couple had 2 small children, she was a SAHM, they fought all the time. The neighbors told us of seeing the kids locked outside while the parents argued.
Our house is a 2 story, center hall. We have a large landing at the top of the stairs. One day when she walked in the front door he was waiting for her at the top of the landing with a gas can (the kind you use for lawnmower gas) and a match. He threw gas on her and lit it. It blew her back out the open door.
The front of the house was burnt, she was injured but luckily not seriously. Had she closed the door and slammed in to it, I think that might have knocked her out and the fire burnt her worse.
He was found guilty of 4 counts of attempted murder. 1 count was her, 2 were for the little kids who were home and 1 for the baby she was pregnant with. He was deported back to their home country. She left the kids here with friends, went back to their home country and divorced him. She's been back here for several years.
Our house has a large finished basement but there is a deep, finished crawl space under our family room. I've never quite seen one like this - it is dry walled, though it is crawl space. It has lights and light switches, etc. Anyway, there were things left in it like the mullions for our house windows etc. H was in there cleaning it out and in the far corner found a huge amount of shot up telephone books. He'd used it as a shooting range. I forgot to mention there were a lot of shell casings in there too. The neighbors were stunned to learn about it.
We bought the house, after it had been remodeled and put up for auction.
There have been incidents around here of casing homes using distressed women
That sounds like the stupidest way to case homes. If someone showed up screaming at our door, I'd grab the kids and phone and move to a back room to call 911 (and keep them from seeing anything) while DH went outside.
I am a victim advocate. Again please check with your police department. Victim compensation is available for crime scene cleanup. Your parents garage is part of the crime scene. This is federal legislation and your rights as witnesses. Again please PM me if you'd like more info.
I honestly don't even know what I would do. I wouldn't be able to let someone in, though I doubt anyone would climb our stairs. I'd have to tell them to go back down to the garage and open that. And hope like hell that H is home.
That is so, so scary.
Is there, like, a standard protocol? What are you supposed to do? Tell them to wait outside while you call 911?
We immediately called 911, dispatch told us to clear the area and put her in backyard or garage. Thank goodness DH and are slightly trained. I bleached all the floors and counters inside just in case of blood spills. The EMTs took the bloody towels.
I've seen this mentioned twice in your post. What does it mean?

Make sure that no one is in the area, nothing suspicious in sight.

Oh my god. I am so sorry it's been craziness, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking in that woman. I hope it ends soon and you guys are glad to settle in and calm down.
{{{amberlyrose}}} I can only imagine how upsetting and draining this whole experience is for you all. Thankfully you and your family members were there to help that poor woman. I hope things get resolved soon.
