My first IUD insert sucked!!! It took awhile to insert, was painful (even after 2 kids), and I could feel it the whole time and it caused pain that I had it removed after a year.
Now, I have a new one for about a month and it's totally different. Same brand, same uterus, but for some reason the insertion wasn't an issue and I can't feel it at all. So I don't know why it was so bad before.
And with that goes any consideration of my getting one!
I'm not trying to convince you either way, but for the record, I also had a painful insertion experience (not like this though) and I still think it was worth it. My Paragard is the third member of my family, I love it so much.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

To posters who are turned off, sometimes it is not like that bad. My insertion was easy peasy, a quick pinch and it was done. The bleeding lasted for about 2-3 weeks. It was totally worth it.
@majorwife sorry your insertion sucked. Hope the bleeding isn't too bad.
I'm a big proponent of IUDs but not for myself lol. I'm glad they're increasing in popularity though.
Just for me personally I hate the unknown of how your body is going to react to it and I don't want to waste money and time on something that isn't going to work out.
But I think every teenage girl should get one! I think nexplanon is another great option. LARCs need to be more popular among teens!

Yeah, I haven't even had kids and my insertion didn't hurt badly at all! I guess my cervix is low and loose.
We're solidly against having kids ever so my IUD is my BFF.

Yep. I'm planning to put my daughters on implant birth control or the IUD when they're sexually active. My mom took me to get Norplant when I was 16.
I'm sorry you had a painful experience, @majorwife. I hope you have a good experience with few or no side effects. (I've had Mirena and ParaGard)

i couldnt in good conscious have LB get one, if it is even half as painful as mine was.
and i thought it was more painful with a cervix that never experienced labor and delivery?
the forcing open of my cervix wasn't even the most painful part. the measuring of my uterus was. i almost kicked my OB in the face.
AFTER those two things, the actual insertion was ok. if i could have skipped the first two steps, i would have been ok. not like it felt licked on by kittens or anything but no where near my most painful experiences.Â
Honestly anecdotally it all really seems like a crap shoot. Plus there is the Skyla now which is smaller for women who haven't had kids. In general though yes women with kids will have an easier time. But there are also women who haven't had kids who have an easy breezy insertion. And that doesn't even take in to account the unknown of how long you'll bleed/spot.
It must have something to do with the position of the cervix and uterus. I was in so much pain getting mine inserted (after taking the meds), that my dr stopped twice and asked if I could go on. I got the distinct impression that he and the nurse hadn't seen someone in that much discomfort during insertion before. I always assumed that my uterus is kinda twisted/tilted weird (based on what it feels like inserting a tampon).
I miss being able to take bc pills. But at least the paragard is good for 10 years, and when I have to have it out, I should be going through menopause.

Stories like these make me glad I said NO when my OB gave it as an option this week. Make that a Hell No. I'm so sorry your experience was so traumatic!
My first IUD hurt like hell, and I felt faint/nauseous from the pain for a couple of days afterwards. It was really bad. But, totally worth it in the end. I hope yours is, too!

Oh man, I'm sorry. Mine hurt like a bitch and she even gave me cytotec prior to soften my cervix. The pain was very short lived though (I even worked the rest of the day). I do love my IUD though.
Inserting mine was so miserable that I had to be put under to do it. My primary doctor tried and when she physically couldn't get it in I was referred to an OBGYN who couldn't manage it as well. It turns out that the angle of cervix and uterus is so off that my OBGYN admitted that she wasn't sure it would go in at all. I'm dreading getting it removed in a few years.

I'm so sorry! That sounds terrible! My first insertion was horribly painful. No bleeding like you, but I may have flat out YELLED, "I'm never having children!" LOL! And then I had a vasovagal reaction and nearly passed out in the lobby.
For my second one, I took an Ativan before and was so freaking nervous that the doc gave me a local. Brief pinching sensation for that but overall MUCH better. I really think that local anesthetic should be considered the standard of care for these!
My gyn called my cervix "angry." Paps hurt like hell for me. I practically danced in the streets when ACOG changed the guidelines away from annual paps.
But, you've had children! That's supposed to make it easier.
It's not the kids - it's the fact that your cervix is floppy from dilating to 10" and passing a baby head through it.
I thank my 99th percentile headed first child for the fact that my IUD insertion was practically painless. Between that and the three pushes to get my 2nd kid out, I suspect my cervix looks some sort of floppy Jim Henson creation.
MW, I'm sorry it sucked so bad. I hope it settles well in there and the next 5 years of no effort BC are worth it.
And on that note, I'm going to finally call to get mine again. I DO NOT WANT a third kid. But MH doesn't trust me to stick to that decision in 2 years when Sizzli isn't squishy anymore so he refuses to get snipped yet.

My gyn gave me cytotec and a local. I didn't ask for either.
I cannot believe some people are doing without either of these things
