Skip the prequels because they are hellacious. But yes, you should see the old ones (episode 4,5, and 6: a new hope, the empire strikes back, and return of the Jedi). The new ones will follow the old ones.
Just do it! I'm an admitted star wars nut, but they're good!
BUt I'm sure you could wikipedia the plot.Â
I tried! My ex-husband was like YOU MUST SEE THESE! I fell asleep.Â
I fell asleep during them too. I don't like action movies anyway, but what I learned is the only more soothing sound to sleep on the couch to than gunfire is space gunfire. Zzzzzz

They're an acquired taste to some. But if you're not interested in seeing them, you can most likely find the plot online somewhere. Or YouTube a 3-minute mash-up or something.

Probably not.
3 movie fast synopsis:
Luke discovers he's a Jedi. Trained by Yoda. Father is sith but ultimately turns good & kills the emperor. Turns out Leia is his sister. She likes a smuggler with a wookie. Lando Calrissian is smoooooth.

To be honest, I have recently watched them and they were good, but not vital. It's like if you've read an iconic book, like Huck Finn or The Little Prince once as a child and you don't really need to ever read it again. I had LOVED them as a child and even in college. Now seeing them in 2015, I realize that the first two are a little slow - lots of dialogue and backstory info. Plus Luke is such a whiner at first... he's like a 9 year old boy IMO and not an 18+ space Jedi.
That being said, I enjoyed them, my older kids loved them, and I was reminded of a lot that I had forgotten, but I'm guessing they will like the newer one even more.
Our dvd's have Hayden Christensen in the end scene also, and it makes me want to break the tv every damn time I watch. I usually just turn it off before the lsd scene.
Ok, this is, like, the funniest thing ever to me. I YouTubed it when they said the changes were going to be made to 6 to encompass Hayden Christiansen, and it is HILARIOUS. He's fumbling with his robes and looking like the most unsure spirit to ever haunt. "You want me to stand where? There? I'm not sure, Yoda, what about here? Ohhh I never get anything right."
The least they could have done is put Ewan McGregor in scene, too!
This irritates me, too. If you're going to change one, change both!
I've actually seen the movies in the machette order (4, 5, 2, 3, 6). I also have no idea why its called that. But I really love the story when told that way. Its worth a re-watch just for this order, imo.

I had to google it because I hate not knowing things.

I don't think I have ever watched the older original Star Wars movies from start to finish.....they are a little long. I tried watching the one with Jar Jar Binks in it, but it was terrible....I can't even remember which movie that one was.

Did you not even read the breakdown @licia posted? Hard work was involved!
Do you like Family Guy? Their Star Wars reenactment episodes follow the Star Wars plots pretty closely ... I only got around to watching Star Wars in the past month but I had already seen the Family Guy episodes, which actually helped me follow along when the real Star Wars plots/characters got confusing. That could be a quick way to get up to speed before you go see the new one.
They're all pretty funny, and they're on Netflix:
Season 6: Blue Harvest (A New Hope) Season 8: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side (The Empire Strikes Back) Season 9: It's a Trap (Return of the Jedi)

The Machette order is for superfans! Don't do this if you are not a fan and just trying to get caught up for the new ones! You will hate life if you have to sit through 6 hours of George Lucas playing with CGI. Just stick with 4,5,6. That said, part of why I love Star Wars is the nostalgia factor. If it's not something you grew up with it may not resonate as much. For me, Star Wars was shown every Christmas on TV as a kid. And that's what it makes me think of. Christmas. So.... Star Wars is actually a Christmas movie!!!!
