I don't remember the exact sequence of events, other than that he died in her bed.
She was terrified to tell Matthew something before they wed. I just assumed they must have gone all the way if she thought there was a real chance he'd leave her over it.

Yeah, but even the fact that the Turkish guy died in her bed was pretty scandalous. Even if the act never took place, it was intended to.
That's another reason why the blackmailer in episode 1 this year annoyed me. Hasn't Mary already faced a potential sex scandal? Remember when that older dude she was going to marry threatened to blackmail her?

Good point! Totally forgot about that. Way to reuse exactly the same plotline.

They showed that scene in the sneak preview before the new season's episode 1 aired, and I haven't rewatched the whole series. I actually thought they were showing a scene from season 2(?) about the first sex scandal. I couldn't believe they did it again.
I love the show, for real, but I have been complaining for three years that the writing is actually horrible. See: Bates as accused murderer of first, his ex-wife, then, of Mr. Green. In Prison forever. See: Edith being disappointed in love over and over again. See: Thomas the Horrible Person who doesn't want anyone else to be happy. See: Lady Mary and her Sex Scandals. Etc etc, ad nauseum.
I know, I know. It sounds like I don't like the show, but I do anyway. The characters are great, but the story development is awful.

See, I haven't been sure whether to be annoyed at the repeated plot lines, or relieved that I'm not alone in making the same mistakes over and over again! (even if they are fictional characters)
Lady Mary and Mr. Pamuk were playing the back nine.
They didn't come right out and say it, but she said something to the effect that he had schooled her on how she could remain a virgin while getting it on.
And I think the 2nd sex scandal wasn't meant to be a scandal...if she'd married Tony, nothing would have come of it...they'd have said "so?" and that would have been the end of it. I wonder why the maid bothered to keep track of them....and why she wouldn't try Tony first....he's the one who's married and has more to lose.
I don't know that Tony does have more to lose, especially in 1925. His wife would certainly be hurt, but Tony's rep wouldn't be harmed in the way Mary's would.
I agree with Stan. Actually, I think Mary would still have more to lose *today*, in 2016. Tony wasn't married at the time, he had made no vows, and the double standard about sex still exists.
OMG **ABSOLUTE BEST** part of snarky recap! So great, so true.
In London, the sexist phone caller is now yelling at Edith IRL. She fires him on the spot. No, actually she just takes it ’cause her superpower is soaking in all forms of criticism and ire like a sponge and then crying it all out at night and sometimes even almost burning down the house while she’s at it.
I Googled for more info on Mary/Pamuk and there appears to be no internet consensus. There is also a lot of debate on whether whatever happened was consensual or rape. Huh. I clearly don't remember the episode well enough.

He shows up and she is like go away, no you can't be here but he starts kissing her anyway IIRC.

I finally am caught up on this as well as of last night. My favorite interaction I think was Hughes and Carson below.
Mrs. Hughes: I want my own wedding to be done in my own way. Is that so outlandish? Mr. Carson: It's my wedding too. Mrs. Hughes: But I am the bride. We'll be doing it your way for the next 30 years, I know that well enough. But the wedding day is mine.
They are so proper throughout the entire show, so I loved that Hughes gave him a bit of snark!
I'm glad Tom is back. But I do wonder if that means that Robert's "indigestion" is more than that.
I liked that Mary seemed a little uncomfortable that Edith had her moment and took on the job of putting the magazine together and that Robert was so interested in it.
I'm glad that Anna may be pregnant. I hope that doesn't go south. And what the heck was up with Bates asking if she would tell him if she found another man? Does he think that she has a London side piece and that's why she came back happy?

I think there was something heart-related in a past season? They're all a blur to me since I've only watched through 1x.
I've never liked Cora and this episode reinforced that yet again (partly because I don't much like the obtuseactress). She instantly jumped to stealing for 3 of their oldest, most trusted servants? After episode 2, I was convinced Daisy's FIL would get the pig farm. But this episode seems to hint Cora had something else in mind or that farm won't work out for him, there was so much forced misunderstanding & interrupted conversations between them. Probably because Cora sucks.
And Anna & Bates, from the snarky recap: "Elsewhere, Anna’s happiness is darkened by her rain cloud of a husband. “You would tell me if you’d fallen in love with someone else?” Where did that even come from? So insecure and creepy!"
He totally stole the Carsons' shine, but TOM IS BACK!
I never gave Robert's indigestion a second thought. You guys are really bumming me out with that .
Poor Mr. Molesley.
I hope nothing comes of Spratt and Denker and their Sam and Diane dynamic. I loathe that woman.
My favorite parts were Violet accusing Isobel of drinking and Mrs. Hughes' "Mr. Carson would forgive you if you attacked him with a brick."
I almost want Daisy to get fired. She is really getting on my nerves. She was only second to Cora and her snottiness over her stupid coats. That was a good apology, but I was not expecting that from her.
George and Sybbie and then Sybbie hugging Marigold was just the absolute best.
Only Downton could make me feel bad that these wealthy estate owners are down on their luck after generations of prosperity and their own stubbornness. Ugh.
I will concede that it was nice seeing Edith in her element lol. I hope no one would expect Mary to break out the pom-poms, but I'm happy for Edith nevertheless.
Like RockNVoll, I'm trying hard to not spoil anything since I watched all of this season already.
I do feel so conflicted with Thomas. I start to feel bad for him, and then I remember all the horrible things he has done. When I was watching the old episodes around Christmas I remember seeing the episode with the cricket match. It was so awesome because Bates somehow got Thomas give him something to use against O'bRien and the phrase was just "her ladyship's soap." We all know what that references - they have no idea except for Thmas and O'Brien. But it reminded me of what a little snot he had been so I don't feel TOO bad about whatever is happening to him. And frankly they are being quite kind in letting him stay on while he interviews for a new job and give him a positive reference and all of that.
