I can't read if the "I don't know who David Bowie" confessions above are proud or embarrassed and that's making me really uncomfortable. He was such a pioneer not just music-wise, but as a person, pushing gender boundaries and a lot of cultural conventions that it makes me think either you shit all over what he represents if you're proud to say you don't GAF about him or simply, that you've lived a very comfortable existence in which your identity/what you represent as a person has never been questioned or challenged by anyone else. So, yeah, I'm uncomfortable.
I'm not proud or embarrassed. I just don't know who he is. I know he was an LGBT icon and that's great. I'm not "shitting all over him."
ETA: I'm 30. The Labyrinth came out in 1986 when I was one.
Same, except I'm 31 and was two when it came out. I'm not proud OR embarrassed, it's just a fact. I'm glad I know more about him now.
But the Labyrinth gifs in this thread are creepy and I'm still not going to see it.
Also it just took me a full minute to figure out how to spell Labyrinth correctly.
I will probably not watch the SOTU tonight. I'll have good intentions to watch it on youtube since we don't have cable, but by the time I get both girls bathed and the big one down, I'll probably want to relax and watch something funny instead.

Overreact much? You're seriously uncomfortable because someone isn't familiar with him? I was born in 1979 but grew up in a very religious home with no television and very little radio. But to you that means either I'm shitting all over what he represents or I've never had my identity questioned. Ok then.
Consider your Dean Strang fan club invitation rescinded.
I'm just starting to watch it but my mom's best friend is in it as an expert. She later dated Dean Strang after having met him on a few cases including this one. She finds his new fame hilarious but didn't want to relive the case by watching it.

It's on broadcast tv. Do you have an antenna?
No, but youtube is streaming it live so we could see it on Roku.
I admit that I think it's weird that people don't know who David Bowie was. You might not listen to his music or watch his movies or whatever, but he's a cultural icon. It's kind of like not knowing who Cher is IMO (as in, her music might not be everyone's cup of tea, but she is still a well known celebrity even without knowing her music.) I don't judge people who don't know who he is, it just strikes me as odd. And now every bowie fan here is going to jump on me for comparing Bowie to Cher, lol.
But of course, I love Cher's music.
I love Cher for her performance in Mermaids.
But I also saw her in concert and love some of her songs. Also the fact that she manages to look like she never ages.
I don't get people who are fans of pro teams they have no connection to. DH is a cowboys fan. He's a fan because his dad/family are fans.
He's never lived in Texas. He's never even visited Texas! His family has never lived in Texas. They're from NC! There is no actual connection to the team.
I'm like WHY are you a fan of a team you have no actual connection to? He thinks I'm BSC.
There are a ton of Steelers fans where I live. I ask the same question. Most have no actual connection to Pittsburgh/Pennsylvania. Some are fans because the coach is from here, but he wasn't always the coach, so when he leaves will they change teams?
I don't necessarily think that is true. Annan is Muslim and the victim was Asian. And it happened in Baltimore. I think you just have to find someone willing to tell the story. Now that is hard. And black people are already aware that there are people who are in prison who shouldn't be due to a corrupt system. So that ain't new information for us.
*********************** I have been waiting for a flameful or UO. And I actually remember what I wanted to say.
I think Chris Brown is a horrible person. He can never get a penny from me. I change the station when his music comes on. BUT I think peoples obsession with him and his misbehavior is because he is black. Same with R. Kelly. There are tons of white celebrities who beat their wives, girlfriends, etc. or do extremely horrible things :coughs Big Ben: but no one is going off about how they shouldn't be allowed to play sports/perform/sing/etc. anymore. And the media is to blame for this too. Do you think all the white people all of sudden stopped being batterers when they were before? But it is a better story if it is a black person.
I feel the same about Michael Vick. This dude served jail time (rightfully so). Has been nothing but a model citizen since. But people won't let this guy be. He only deserves to be able to have a minimum wage job. But other people deserve second chances...well, I guess other non-black people deserve them.
Double standard.
like the downright OUTRAGE that the steelers would sign Vick, with people threatening to jump ship and sell their season tickets/etc., and yet...your starting QB? Ben? hello?
pisses me off so much.
I was actually thinking about this over the weekend. Ben/Vick specifically...I wonder if it's because people like dogs more than women, and that drunk girls deserve it anyway. Ben ruined my love for the Steelers.
I don't care for Big Ben, but I am still a Steelers fan. I hope that's not flameful.
I'm a Mike Vick fan and I am not ashamed to say it. I am not a fan of who he was but I am a fan of who he is now. The whole argument about rehabilitation, paying for your crimes, and his race raise my blood pressure. It basically means that even if you serve your time and you do everything that society expects of you, it will never be enough. Especially for a black man.
I know this is flameful and I followed the Vick story closely so I have seen everything there is to see about that case.
On the other hand, Big Ben hasn't ever paid his debt to society in my eyes.

I mean, I recognize who David Bowie is and I know (and respect!) that he's an icon in the gay community. But (before this thread) I couldn't for the life of me tell you why or name any of his songs or movies or what exactly he was famous for.
I was pretty sheltered growing up and know basically nothing about pop culture before 1995. It's just a giant void.
(Now I feel like I'm defending myself which is so dumb! For what?? Not having cable growing up? lol)
My husband grew up in the 70s and 80s without cable, plus he is 5 years older than me and I am forever explaining things pop culture things of the 1980s to him. "I love the 80s" is almost brand new to him.
MaM is recipe for a couch nap for me. I was so excited about and am still interested, but as soon is comes on, I'm out. We've watched 7 or so episodes and I think I've seen one in its entirety.

I fell asleep each time I started it
I didn't get into it until the second episode so I say keep watching.
I just now ordered dd1's birth certificate. I had 4.5 years to do it and I officially waited until the last minute - kindergarten enrollment tine. lol. The good news is that I ordered dd2's too so I'm ahead of the game on that one.

I didn't have cable either. The Labyrinth used to be on TV on Sunday afternoons along with The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story. If you guys say you've never seen those either I might need to start a spreadsheet!
I don't understand how Bowie could be before anyone's time? That's like saying oh, yeah, the Beatles, never heard of them - before my time!
Or Queen...which if you have heard of Queen you should know Bowie from Under Pressure. Hell if you have heard Ice Ice Baby you know Bowie! He was on the Shrek 2 soundtrack! I'm an '86 baby but I love David Bowie.
I get it though. I think it's probably more that yall know Bowie's stuff but don't connect it with him. There are some artists I do that with and then I look it up one day and say ohhhh so that's who that is.
Also, I was a little taken aback during my morning meeting when someone mentioned that the people graduating college in May will be Generation Z or whatever. I also got offended when he said Millenials are 33 and younger. Then I had to go looking for this list again:
Yeah, I'm a Millennial. I cringe when people complain about "the Millennials" or whatever. I do think I have more in common with my Gen X colleagues than my Millennial students, but maybe that's my Millennial narcissism showing LOL.

Please tell me it's the DNA lady
No she deals in bones. She's a forensic anthropologist.
Also I hope people do not see this show as how the entire state is. I can barely understand what they are saying sometimes.
I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I didn't know who Michael Jackson WAS until I was like 12. So 1997? lol
I didn't really listen to the radio until late middle school and we never had cable. What we did watch on network TV was pretty monitored. I watched like 90% Disney movies until a really embarrassingly late age. lol
Seriously, my birth until the mid-late 90s = pop culture void.
ETA: My parents were not religious! Or crazy! I don't know why my childhood was so weird. We listened to a lot of Kingston Trio and James Taylor. We played a lot of board games. My sister and I played with Barbies until like high school. LOL
What the hell did your parents listen to?!
I grew up with my parents listening to Bowie, Michael Jackson, Prince, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd...
Omg, my kid is going to tell his friends one day that he grew up with his mother listening to Justin Bieber & Lil Wayne. Fuck. Haha
ETA: never mind, I missed the James Taylor part.
Im embarassed by the fact that I asscociate Midnight Oils album with cleaning in my childhood. Every friggen weekend. Clean house. Sing at the top of my lungs "How can we dance when our earth is turning? How do we sleep while our beds are burning?"
