Child sexual abuse is never excusable. The editors of the National Catholic Register apologize for publishing without clarification or challenge Father Benedict Groeschel's comments that seem to suggest that the child is somehow responsible for abuse. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our publication of that comment was an editorial mistake, for which we sincerely apologize. Given Father Benedict's stellar history over many years, we released his interview without our usual screening and oversight. We have removed the story. We have sought clarification from Father Benedict.

I have all the books I could need, and what more could I need than books? I shall only engage in commerce if books are the coin. -- Catherynne M. Valente
You don't go looking for a father figure to have a sex - fucker! A wannabe father figure seeks out little kids to abuse emotionally before pushing sex on them as a "transfer of love" so they tell these young boys.. Ugh. This is just gross. Sick, Sick, Sick!

Nevermind the shittiness of blaming the victim, this guy apparently thinks if you're a good person (ie priest) "on their first offense, they should not go to jail because their intention was not committing a crime" Because good people (who just happen to rape) will totally correct their rapey nature on their own. Nevermind that these raping priests had numerous victims. And if you really are such a good person, you can manage to be a father figure without fucking an underage girl. I'm sure it's easy if someone has even a modicum of morals.

So they are only sorry they didn't edit it out before it reached the public, not that he blamed homosexuality or showed tremendous insensitivity and ignorance, and he will have no consequences.
This is just sickening. I just can't believe that a) he thinks like this b) he thinks it's OKAY to think like this c) that he still has a job d) that he probably thinks that God is cool with what he said.
Please tell me that someone will make sure that this guy has no contact with young people ever. ever. again.
Reason # 10000 why I am so damn critical of the Catholic Church. I just do not understand why they have SO many people like this in their organization - the pedophiles, the cover-ups, the gay-bashing - when does it end??
I'm not trying to be a Catholic-basher with this post, and I'm sorry if it sounds this way. I just feel like at some point Catholics need to either get vocal about this shit, or leave the organization. Otherwise there will never be and end to this crap.

:-| :-| :-| :-| :-| :-| :-| :-| sooo it's ok to repeatedly rape a child if 1. it's not gay sex 2. the child seduces you 3. you didn't intend to commit a crime 4. you marry the victim
Thankfully, the Archdiocese is speaking out: Joseph Zwilling, spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, condemned the comments Thursday. "What Father Groeschel said cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged," he said in a statement on the Archdiocese's website. "The sexual abuse of a minor is a crime, and whoever commits that crime deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
and his prominence will fade quite quickly for sure: In a statement relayed by a spokesman in a phone interview Thursday afternoon, Father Groeschel said he didn't intend to blame victims and apologized for any harm he caused. "My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be," he said.
The spokesman, Father Glenn Sudano, said that the Franciscan Friars of Renewal agreed with the rebuke by the Archdiocese. He also said Father Groeschel, who tripped and hit his knee and head last week, was unfit to speak to media.

Yuck
I am glad too. I have to say in all of the times I have heard Fr Groeschel speak, I have never heard him say things like this. It did make me wonder what is health is like these days.
So is he retaining his directorship? Short of a removal from any and all positions of authority, the church is establishing once again that it protects those who protects abusers.
I'm sure there is a "process" IIOY. They can't just err onto side of caution based on these misspoken statements. *eye gouge*
Remember me saying we all have our triggers ? Yep.
For statements? Unfortunately, yes, there is a process. If he had been acused (just accused with very little investigation) he would have been stripped of his frock faster than you can say boo (see usccb).

I know there is a legitimate process but I really believe it to be unwarranted in this case.
Remove him. Seriously, remove him. That shouldn't be a process. It shouldn't be a process when a man all but proclaims to be a child rapist/sympathizer.

ITA. There should be zero tolerance at this point on this particular subject. It's not as though there is any argument as to whether his statements were misguided/controversial/whatever. They are repugnant.
(Not piling on Tef here. I don't expect her to speak on behalf of the hierarchy or the other 999,999,999 Catholics!)
