Hi all! I'm late to the party because I've gotten lazy about checking in on NBC. Since I'm here a lot more often, I'm happy about the move!
Me: 36, divorced, living with two cats. Currently trying to get used to cohabiting again, since my 4-year LDR boyfriend just moved to town and into my little flat. Reading tastes: eclectic, with a penchant for social science fiction and especially xenoantrhopology
Most of the time I live on the Travel board.

Anyone here from the nest remember the annual/quarterly book challenges? It listed a variety of genres or book categories & you could read & earn points. I miss that. Is there anything like that here? Or anyone interested in starting something....
We don't really have anything like that here.
I remember the Challenges from The Nest, but I always felt intimidated by them, because I usually read 4-5 books a month. The Nest Challenges were 25 to 35 books over three months and there was no way I could finish that many, so I didn't bother trying.
I did the Popsugar Ultimate Reading Challenge last year, and found it to be a struggle. Completing it actually made my reading less enjoyable because I was reading things simply to fit a category, not because I really wanted to read that book. I find reading more enjoyable when there is no pressure to choose or finish a particular book.
I certainly don't object to the idea of challenges, but I doubt I'd participate.

The seasonal book challenges on TN died off about a year ago, because there were so few participants.
I never finished one (even the shorter ones), but I enjoyed them because in looking for things that sounded interesting and fit the categories, I found so many new things to add to my TBR list. (Not that I need to be adding to my TBR list, though! Haha!)
I'm not sure that I ever participated in the challenges. I did like that it would take people out of their comfort zone. I'm pretty genre specific. It's not that I care for other genres, I just get in the zone and plow through.
Maybe we could come up with a different type of challenge that does reward mostly quantity? I don't know what that is, but I see that others have mentioned challenges they've found on other websites.
TBH, I'd love to see us actually discussing the books we're reading. I feel like I participate in the What Are You Reading posts, but I never really start anything ABOUT the books I'm reading. I want to change that.
I created my own little challenge ... I took some of those "how many of these classic/great/popular books have you read" surveys and I was a little bummed to see how few I'd read.
So my challenge this year is to read 6 books that I wouldn't read otherwise. They don't have to be classics, though some are (Siddhartha). They don't have to be old (American Gods was one). But I don't count books that I would read normally (e.g., the next Louise Penny). Six is a low number, as I've already read three, but I didn't want to make all my reading about the challenge. I just wanted to encourage myself to stretch a bit.

Have you read Siddhartha yet? I read it years ago, and really loved it. It's been on my re-read list for a long time, I just never seem to pick it up.
Regarding challenges generally - I never participated because they always seemed like a chore to me - I don't really like to plan what I'm going to read, and I feel like fitting books into categories would take some planning and Id end up reading things I didn't really care for just to complete the challenge. I like the idea of personal challenges like Wallflower described, though.
I also agree with SnShne322 that I'd like to discuss what we're reading a little more, though. I like monthly books for discussion and even buddy reads, but I think buddy reads would be better with a group of 3 or 4 instead of just 2.

I just finished it about two weeks ago. I liked it, but one reason that I'd read it is that I remember my father enjoyed it. I was really missing him as I read the book, wishing that I could talk to him about it. I think that overshadowed my enjoyment, honestly. Next up is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I think.

I'd be interested in a challenge, though I'd take it with the attitude that I'm using it to stretch my reading, not that I really care if I achieve a 100% on the challenge.
This year I couldn't find a full challenge that I wanted to do, so I combined some elements of a few challenges that I partially liked. My list is:
1. A book based on a fairy tale 2. A National Book Award winner 3. A YA bestseller 4. A book you haven't read since high school 5. A book set in your home state 6. A book translated to English 7. A romance set in the future 8. A book set in Europe 9. A book under 150 pages 10. A New York Times bestseller 11. A book that's becoming a movie this year 12. A book recommended by someone you just met 13. A self-improvement book 14. A book you can finish in a day 15. A book written by a celebrity 16. A political memoir 17. A book at least 100 years older than you 18. A book that's more than 600 pages 19. A book from Oprah's Book Club 20. A science-fiction novel 21. A book recommended by a family member 22. A graphic novel 23. A book published in 2016 24. A book with a protagonist who has your occupation 25. A book that takes place during summer 26. A book … 52. …and its prequel 27. A murder mystery 28. A book written by a comedian 29. A dystopian novel 30. A book with a blue cover 31. A book of poetry 32. The first book you see in a bookstore 33. A classic from the 20th century 34. A book from the library 35. An autobiography 36. A book about a road trip 37. A book about a culture you're unfamiliar with 38. A satirical book 39. A book that takes place on an island 40. A book that's guaranteed to bring you joy 41. A book set in Asia 42. A book set in Africa 43. A book set in Australia 44. A book set in Antarctica 45. A book set in North America 46. A book set in South America 47. A book written by an author who has the same Zodiac sign 48. A Pulitzer prize winning book 49. A book dealing with mental illness 50. Start a new series 51. A book with a single word title
(note: numbering is a little funky due to the book & it's prequel formed when combining challenges, but it's 52 books).
Many of the books I'm reading fit into one of these already, but I use it especially when I'm looking at available library audiobooks and trying to choose among them.
I'm at 15 so far this year. I figure by the end of the year I'll get to around 40.
Welcome to all the defectors from the site that must not be named.
I tend to gravitate toward fantasy and sci-fi from authors I've already read, but I'm currently in two book clubs and in each of them the host for the month picks the book and that's what you read - no voting. It's definitely gotten me out of my typical picks rut, which is good. Although really, I'll ready anything that isn't "chick lit;" reading about insipid twenty or thirty-something women who run away from non-problems so they can find themselves and a man makes me want to punch things.
I'm doing an A-Z author's last name challenge (so read a book from V. C. Andrews, Pierce Brown... Yevgeny Zamyatin), and I've done 20/26 so far. Although I fudged it a little bit with my X author who is Chinese, and I'm pretty sure he was miscategorized as an X when he should have been a Q.
The read a book like X, or sent in Y, types of challenges are interesting to me, but I always end up just reading whatever and seeing where they fit out of curiosity, rather than seeking out a book that fits the category.
I used to be active on The Nest until my login wouldn't work and about the time I got pregnant last year. With pregnancy and trying to move to having baby and officially moving I hadn't had much time for anything else. I was eajanvrin over there. My husband and I have two little girls, one who is almost 6 and one who is 7 months old. We just moved into our new house and are working hard to make it our home. I will try to be more active.

I remember you! Welcome back and congrats on the new house! I'm sure moving with 2 little ones was tough.
Another newbie from the nest here. I'm 37 and work as a fellowship coordinator at a hospital. I have 12 year old twin boys and enjoy just about any kind of book. I tend to read more YA, paranormal/fantasy, historical fiction.
Another Newb from the Nest, my name was jenndawnp over there, I've posted off and on for a few years. I'm 33 years old, in Maine, we have 4 cats, and I work as a Business Analyst at a software development company. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Back in the day I was fairly active on the NBC but then with the migration over here I just hopped to other boards. I miss the various exchanges we used to do (books, bookmarks, etc) and discovering new books to read.
My 411: 40, divorced, no kids (just lots of cats), voracious reader (5-7 books a week). I tend to stick to mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy and non-fiction comedy books.

I pop in from time to time, but have never done an intro. I spend most of my time on MM and H&F.
About me: 33, married for almost 3 years, 2 step kids 11 & 7, 1 dog that's 11 and my reading is intermittent at best. Right now, I'm in a heavier reading phase, but I know it's only a matter of time and it'll change again. I read all sorts of books and usually rely on recommendations from others.
Welcome to all our new members! Maybe you can inspire me again. I'm having a rough couple of months book-wise. I just haven't been able to get into anything since February, and I was so embarrassed to show my face I didn't even know there was a migration!
Hi everyone! I'm wife2james over on the nest. I'm joining you guys too!
I'm 38, married, no kids. I work full time while I'm pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Health Care Management part time. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to read but I am slowly working my way through the Outlander series (currently on #3 Voyager). I'm pretty open minded so I don't have any genres that I specifically enjoy.
Just heard that we had a bunch of new members.
We have a pretty active Outlander group here, though most posts are made on Married Life. We talk about both the show and the books.

I love the show too although I'm not up to date with the current episodes. My husband and I both have been binge watching Season 1 but and then we'll have to catch up on Season 2 at a friends' house since we don't have Starz.
I'm just a little over halfway through Voyager now and it's getting very good.

If you join in, be aware that almost all of us have read the entire series! Generally we're pretty good at warning spoilers or putting them behind cuts.

Sounds great! I would love to join in because I'm probably going to want to talk more about Voyager the deeper I get into it! Now that I'm on a school break, I'll have more time to read. My goal is to be finished with Voyager by the end of May. I'm not a fast reader at all so it may just take that long. lol

I can't keep up with the speed on ML but I binge watched Outlander season 1 when it was streaming free 2 weeks ago(?). Having read the books I wasn't expecting to be as disturbed as I was. It was intense.
