I just saw the video, and the way his girlfriend managed to keep her hands on the wheel and keeps calling him "sir" even though he's just murdered her boyfriend right next to her? My god. It's so clear that someone has taught her how to interact with police, and it's heartbreaking and angering. And my heart breaks that she had to stay like that and then was motherfucking HANDCUFFED FOR DOING NOTHING and was unable to hold him in his last minutes.
FUUUUUUUUCK.
I cannot even imagine the horror and pain and fear that our fellow posters here are feeling for their black fathers and brothers and sons (and themselves).
I think about this all the time with my son. If I don't teach him to make sure he calls the police sir, do every single thing they ask immediately, don't wear his hoodie up, make sure they can always see his hands or another million things he could do just, you know, living, this could easily be him. I can't be sure how much of it he can easily understand when you throw ASD into the mix. It scares me every day and I will never forget this poor woman and her child in the back seat.
A few years ago my husband was pulled over and told to take his shirt off so they could check him for gang tattoos. The cops were huge assholes and had my husband cuffed around the side of their car "for safety." He's a Marine Corps vet who served two tours, is working on a masters in info systems and wears a suit to his IT job everyday. Please believe when he was pulled over for speeding none of that mattered. He was a minority driving too nice of a car so something must have been wrong.
I am so fucking angry. Angry that this is the US. Angry that this is the world my son has to live in. Angry that I wasn't angrier before we had him. Angry that mothers of children of color have been dealing with this for decades (really centuries, but I am thinking since the mid-50s). Angry that people will pull up the record to try to give cops the benefit of the doubt. Angry that we have officers like this. Angry that there are officers who truly want to protect us and can't speak up for fear of retaliation, the FOP, a toxic system.
I gave my baby a bottle before I left for work this morning. And I cried while he closed his eyes and snuggled into me because I will never have to worry about his interaction with police officers. I will never have to worry that someone will judge or fear him because of the color of his skin. He will never fully understand what that fear feels like, nor can I. Mixed in with the guilt, sadness, and frustration is relief. And I'm ashamed that I get to feel that relief simply because my son has white skin.
I am so fucking sorry. I am so sorry to anyone who lives with this fear.
After watching videos of both shootings I am done. I'm crying while my 3 year old watches cartoons. I am a gun owner but I would happily give it up just to be done with all this violence. I hate this culture of violence. I just can't anymore.

If you tell a police officer you have a weapon at a traffic stop, are you supposed to stop moving altogether and then get out of the car? Someone on a FB thread (the page for WDEL, if anyone is up for an argument) is saying that is something that everyone who carries a concealed weapon should know.
I mean, obviously, it doesn't matter if the carrier is black, but I didn't know if this was an actual rule.
He dialed it back a bit, still blaming Castile, but saying the officer was also wrong and should have given him a second to comply or whatever.
A friend of mine was protesting at the scene and then at Daytons mansion and said something about police evacuating him after people started honking and making a lot of noise, so I wonder when/if he'll come back while people are out there.
Mpr said Dayton is still there. Hopefully he'll come out and say something. This is all so wrong.
He's going to say "we need to investigate and don't be so quick to judge..blah! Blah! Nothing to see here..."

Again - there we go - the victim blaming. He alerted the officer. But he's still dead. He complied and HE'S STILL FUCKING DEAD.
Castile didn't get out of the car. It looked as if he was still in a seatbelt.
I'm really tired of there being every possible victim-blaming scenario. I'm tired of it being "anti-police" to ask REAL questions regarding police procedures and whether or not we have shaky officers who are very quick to pull the trigger. These things are appropriate questions that the public has every right to ask. You can't have a society where you basically say it's not ok to question law enforcement. Especially considering the long history of cops aiding lynch mobs.
Citizens have every right to ask questions. They are right to demand better regulations when it becomes apparent that the ethos of "Serve and Protect" is being thrown out the window.

And these fucking cops have shit to do all day but pull people over and be assholes. Seriously. St Anthony and Roseville cops are known as assholes by other fucking departments.
My like was agreement. I felt squicky liking it without further comment.
A black man is not a threat in and of himself by being male and black. HE IS NOT A THREAT BY JUST BEING A BLACK MAN. 'Good guys with guns' are only that if you're not a black man in this country. I'm sickened by this.

I know it's victim-blaming. I hope that's clear.
I know. I'm addressing the idiot you posted about.
The Washington Post article has a lot of quotes from his mom That are killing me.
She described being stopped by police at the scene, saying "I asked them where my son was at. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to know where my son was because I didn't want my son to die alone."
She still hadn't seen his body as of this morning.
Wt ever loving fuck. These are human beings who are supposed to be protected and served by the police - not murdered by them. And then to be treated as if your child has done something wrong - when he was a VICTIM. No decency. No humanity. Makes me ill.
Well if you wrongfully shoot someone you are probably hoping they die so they can't testify against you later.
Good point. Jesus.
This guy was shot in the ARM. Seems like first aid could have helped.
F everything.
Based on the video, it looks like he bled out very quickly. My armchair doctor conclusion is that the bullet hit his brachial artery. One of the Orlando victims was "only" shot in the arm, but because it hit her artery, she died while her cousin survived. A similar situation can occur with the femoral artery in the leg. These are the major arteries that pump blood from the heart to a region of the body - if they are hit, chances of survival are incredibly low simply because the rate of blood loss is so high.
This is, of course, all a tangent because shots never should have been fired.

But! We must feel safe. I mean if my kid is at a school with a majority black student population, how can I guarantee his/her safety? *sarcasm*
Police training is 100% responsible for this. They are militarized, they aren't able to deescalate anything, and so that means in the case of black people, they don't stop. Because the police don't seem to see anyone other than cops as people, but at least they figure white people have the means and social capital to fight it, so they come in alive. Minorities don't.
This is disgusting.
Because folks are being murdered in front of witnesses and on camera and no one is convicted. Kinda how no one in Greece paid taxes because there were no consequences.
