I've been reading these threads and just don't know what to say. Everything is feeling hopeless. I have never been particularly patriotic, but these days I'm feeling embarassed and ashamed of my country.
It's also worth noting that this particular stretch of street is notorious for traffic stops for the smallest of things. SA police dept is contracted as the PD for Falcon Heights since they don't have their own force (which frankly is weird to me because it's closer to Roseville proximally). Falcon Heights makes a shitton of money off of these traffic stop traps. I wonder if the press will investigate into that part of it because this might not have happened at all of the cities weren't so hungry for money for such menial stops.

I'm guessing because SAV is tiny and the cops do t have much to do, so expanding their service area makes sense for them too? Vs Roseville whose cops are probably kept pretty busy?

Yeah I'm sure that is a big part of it. It wasn't until recently I even realized that SA was the PD for Falcon Heights, I thought they just did Lauderdale.

Thanks for sharing. This is very interesting and sad. Just a few days ago, a few of us here discussed ago how the drive to finance municipal operations through fines and penalties is destroying black lives. It's a tragedy that Philando Castile is yet another victim.
Hmm. I just heard from a friend that she heard on the news that they released the radio call of the officer who called it in, claiming he pulled the car over for suspicion of Philando looking like a robbery suspect from over the weekend. I'm waiting on a response to which news source she heard this from because I can't find it anywhere.
Not confirmed but she guessed it was this robbery (which occurred approximately a mile down the same street as this traffic stop):
I'm hoping this isn't true because I'm already imagining the way people will try to spin this as "justification".
ETA: hope that the robbery suspicion isn't true, I should clarify-- not that it isn't true that he committed a robbery because I don't believe that he did.

I'm also from the area and. I can't even tell you how many tickets I received while driving on larpenteur.
Thanks for posting this.
I haven't gotten a ticket but my aunt and mom both have, for going 3 and 5 mph over the speed limit. Right in that stretch in front of stouts and then in front of Pizza Hut half a block down.

And it's frustrating as heck that this didn't stop in the wake of Ferguson.

Officer's name apparently has been released. Jeronimo Yanez 4 year veteran. Another reminder that racism whether explicit or subconscious is not exclusively a white thing.
Do we put paper in front of you when it's your son that is dead? How do you spell your last name? Respect the boundaries of the Castile family. Respect the boundaries of our people. Go ask the POLICE the questions.
Unfortunately the media does not respect most grieving families. While not the same AT ALL, my cousin's toddler tragically accidentally drowned last weekend. The media SWARMED around their house and were very intrusive.
I am having a hard time putting into words my feelings surrounding yesterday's events. It's some mixture of anger, sadness, and disgust. I'm tired of hearing how racism doesn't exist and that "all lives matter." I WISH that was the case.

I should have put that in quotes. Those were from one of the speakers from in front of the Governor's mansion, as were a couple other of my posts. But you are absolutely correct.
Andplusalso, not something anyone said, but the expectation of "forgiveness" by families of victims also enrages and frustrates me. I wouldn't be asked the day after a shooting whether I'd forgiven the person who murdered my family, I don't think. Yet time and again they are asked if they have forgiven the shooter for killing their loved ones.

I'm sorry- it seems like the media has gotten out of control lately, from the professionals and networks to all the news-want-to-bees, who have no tact or decency any more

Nor do they hold off running stories until they have actual facts. I had about 2 seconds in the spotlight and found he media both incredibly intrusive and also shockingly inaccurate.

“I am deeply concerned about what seems to be an epidemic of African-American men being killed by police officers. We have often seemed demonstrations and debates and I raise the critical question, ‘When will there be systemic reform?’ Reform such that, citizens are not in fear of their lives when stopped and questioned by the police,” says Judge Hatchett.
Castile was a school nutrition services supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori School. The 32-year-old had no prior felony arrests. He was well respected among his colleagues. Students remember him as funny, warm and kind.
“Valerie Castile and her family are very passionate and committed to ensuring that Philando’s death is not just another statistic,” says Hatchett. “She wants her son’s death to mark a time in this country’s history where reform becomes less about rhetoric and more about reality.”
