So computer experts, help me out. Is Kevin full of shit, per usual, or nah? Lol.
I am not worried about someone having my IP address. IP address alone can not tell a person where you live.*
(Unless you own the IP addresses that are mapped directly to your house which is only something nerds like me would do... but even I don't do that cause we are running out of IP addresses!!!!)
QFT. The vast majority of us are not going to give away our locations based on IP. If you're posting from work then MAYBE someone can figure out your office but that's a giant maybe.
Nerd moment: I work for a hosting company and we are actively working to get to IPv6. Lack of IP is a real concern!
Seriously, what happened was really shitty. I guess I'm naïve because I don't even know how someone could know all that information just from being on here. I would think it was someone who is friends on social media too. Or I just don't pay enough attention
I thanked her for bringing it to my attention last night, so that this was caught and deleted within 5 minutes of it being brought to my attention. I had admin access to the map, too, and saw nowhere that I could see IP addresses (though I didn't look because I had no intentions of getting anyone's personal information in this).
This was originally my idea. I posted asking if it was possible to create a map that someone could look at as a visual of just how far their caring circle reached. I specifically wanted one that required no personal information to be added (hence why Google maps wasn't used and no login was required).
I feel awful that it has turned out this way. I should have known that someone would ruin it. I have personally apologized to the person whose information was posted, and asked if she would like the thread deleted. When she said, "If you wouldn't mind," I immediately deleted the text and sent a message to flex for the whole thread to be deleted.

This is what I was wondering, too. I know what industry Laz works in from her posts here, but I have no idea WHERE she works and would imagine whoever did this only does know because they saw it somewhere on social media. Which seems more concerning - to me, anyway - than a prayer map pinpointing my IP address.

I'm not worried about Zeemaps having info.
I'm not worried about Proboards having my info.
I'm not worried about Google having my info and knowing that I recently had to look up "fetching" and then regretted it.
I am cautious about making my personal info available willy nilly to random people here. I don't even have Facebook friends on this board anymore. Call me old-fashioned I guess.

Honestly, I don't think the map thing is that big of a deal. It was just ever so slightly easier for someone to use that to post Laz's info as creating an AE to post it here.
Just another thing that would make your H's head explode and double bolt the doors.
ETA CaptainCatnip created a map to let people check in to show His all the people all over the world that are supporting her. Some fucknut went onto the map and tagged Laz and her actual work location without Laz's knowledge.
.....what the fuck???
My son picked a helluva day to join the Army The Army picked a helluva day to enlist my son (since they're in charge now) so I missed this completely. What a jerk. @lazarus I'm sorry that happened to you.

I'm going well off topic, but all I can think of right now is the scene in Hackers where they're pinpointing a location by going through some weird city map online. Like the internet is an alternate reality.

ZeeMaps as a site surely logs your IP. Every site you are on will, like proboards. BUT, like proboards, admins do not have access to specific IP information.
The GBCN admins can see when accounts are on the same IP, but not the IP itself.
Proboards provides the IP of every registered user.
I did and I'm still find it irritating that Kevin shared her PSA only after everyone added their names and the map was taken down. Seems like it would have been more appropriate at the beginning of the other thread, instead of a vague COME ON, GUYS.
A PSA that is essentially useless as it was based on a completely made-up scenario?
Really though, this is the height of hilarity from someone who has posted her nearly naked behind on this very board.
GTFO with your nonsense. So annoying, all the damn time.
Someone from the FBI did contact me as a result of that photo. It was unnerving and I only double checked his business card after he left. Talk about regret!

Yeah, I actually thought the COME ON was in reference to the thread wherein His was accused of exaggerating, and Kevin was one of the first to jump on that bandwagon, publically at least.

Look I'm just saying if you think you have insight into how we might be handing over personal info to strangers, maybe don't sit on that until the theoretical damage is done.
Sorry about that. My shift ended and I had John Oliver burning a hole in my DVR.

I'm really sorry for what happened to Laz, and social media is probably the easiest way.
If someone tried hard enough, they could find most of our identities, especially if we ever posted a photo.
Most of us (including me) post identifying data points. For some of us, that's specific enough to find us. Region of the country, profession, hobbies, kids. If you run races and your photo has your race number, that's identifying information. If you're a teacher in a specified age group in a general region, if you posted a photo odds are someone can find you on the school website or a parent's post. If your kids play sports at a specific level in a general region, that information is available. When you put it all together, it's a lot.

I know that it doesn't really matter, because if you believe me or not serious on how well you trust internet strangers and remember me, but I'm not nearly intelligent enough to trace an IP address even if I did have them. I saw no where that it automatically pinpointed your location on the map, even on mobile, which is one reason I chose that site, and it only used what info the user entered. City/state/zip or in the case of a city with multiple zip codes, just city/state. I'm pretty sure that I was even able to stop it from showing zip codes at all when I disabled the option for full addresses.

Right? I didn't even add to the map, but to be all, "I'm curious how many of you are/were idiots" well after the fact is so messy.
Never mind that she didn't even know what she was talking about.
man - you miss all the fun when you decide to clean the kitchen.
All of this excitement happened when I was supposed to be cleaning my kitchen. Which resulted in a casual friend (so someone who hasn't been to my house in a LONG time) coming over for coffee while my house was completely trashed. Folded laundry stacked on the coffee table and dirty dishes in the sink! Oops! I don't mind people seeing my house looking "lived in", but with today being the first day of school & us trying to squeeze every last bit of fun into the summer, my house was in desperate need of attention. Oh well!

Most of your IP addresses are probably not static anyways, so you can just change it. If you use a laptop and a coffee shop wifi connection, you'll have a different IP than at work or at home.
I remember Tonif's signature and I'm pretty sure every user saw their own IP address, so she wasn't really tracking anyone.
