I'm curious how many people here hand-delivered their IP address to the person(s) with admin access to the map.
I'm not saying that anyone necessarily had bad intentions with this map idea. It just happens to be a very easy way for someone to collect specific location information and connect it with screen names.
EDIT: No harm was done (aside from the Laz stuff). I was being way too overly cautious about this, so nevermind me here.
Kittenskaboogle-whoever is who again? I'm not asking for this person to be identified, but I'm just pointing out that it's not exactly someone with a history around here. The good news is that it sounds like she deleted everything and I have no reason to accuse her of saving IP addresses or of having any ill intent.
In the wake of the sideshow uproar over Laz's info being revealed, I would think twice before inputting my GBCN screen name on another site meant specifically to collect targeted location information.
Sorry for trying to ruin this on page one of the other thread with my passive aggressive one-liners.

It is very nerve racking. I am glad I was busy this morning and only saw it after the link was deleted. I can't imagine someone doing this again and putting personal information about them on here. Again I am so sorry this happened to you @laz.
I'm not that familiar with zeemaps, do you know that they collect IP addresses?
Yes, and thats is exactly how it works. It "knows" where to put your pin on the map based on your location by IP address.
Any website can collect IP addresses, it's not nefarious. But giving some posters here my GBCN screen name plus my IP address doesn't feel comfortable to me, and I bet I'm not alone.

To be fair, Captain Catnip does have a history here. She's been around several years, has shared quite a bit about herself (that I've never felt she was making up), and always been kind and caring. Obviously, people can carry on a ruse for quite some time (as evidenced by Monterey), and people need to weigh out their own comfort level, but wanted to point out that despite not having met IRL, there are still people here that I would trust to a certain degree.

As an example, when you use ProBoards, it collects your IP address. The global admin(s) can see IP addresses next to screen names. As a community we trust Ellie/y4m with that info, no problem. But I'm not okay with giving that info to GerbilsAhoy73 new member, you know?

Are you saying someone could have used the map to trace someone's IP address and figure out who they are? And if @lazerus24 didn't post her own name or location, can someone figure out who did? I don't know in depth how this stuff works.

No, I'm not even talking about Laz here.
I'm saying that if you participated in the map, your IP address was logged and connected with your GBCN screen name and/or the note that you added. The admin(s) of the zeemap likely had access to all of that before it was deleted.
Again, it could very well have been nothing to worry about. But since we're talking about privacy, I thought I'd point out that this is something that I would look at cautiously if it comes up again

Throwing it back, old school, but does anyone remember when tonif used to have the IP tracker in her signature, and it would track yours anytime you replied to her. LOL. We had no idea what we were doing on the Internet a decade ago.

I have met her in person. She is a nice person and has been around here for awhile. She would never intend to hurt anyone.
I think it's a shame someone had to be an assclown about this, but I think the intentions were good. Like others have said, Captain Catnip is not a new poster and I doubt she was going to do anything nefarious with IP addresses. I also think it's worth remembering that the internet is not safe, and not private, and you run risks any time you post anything at all, which everyone should know by now.
I do continue to be shocked by catfishes even though I REALLY shouldn't be, though, and I am also not as paranoid about privacy as many people seem to be, so maybe take my post with a grain of salt.

Half the time, I think I'm too tech stupid to even be on here in this decade.

Unless that option didn't show up for me, you actually had to type in a location. There was no geolocation info pre-populated on my end. Maybe my browser blocked that but nor for others?
Same - I had to type in my location, which I made the general larger town near where I actually live.

Same here. And my location is "Boston", so, you know, have at it super hackers? Not many of us tightly wound here, so I should be pretttty easy to find.
Just another thing that would make your H's head explode and double bolt the doors.
ETA CaptainCatnip created a map to let people check in to show His all the people all over the world that are supporting her. Some fucknut went onto the map and tagged Laz and her actual work location without Laz's knowledge.
