BEDFORD, Texas - The Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district is apologizing for a teacher who picked an offensive nickname for her class.
A parent who didn’t want his face shown on camera shared a picture with FOX 4 that shows the name “Jighaboos” on a laminated classroom sign at Bell Manor Elementary in Bedford.
According to his son, it’s the mascot name his sixth grade teacher assigned to the class. He said other classes got different names.
“You put Dream Team and then you have the Jighaboos. Really? Really with that? That’s, that’s unacceptable,” he said.
The outraged dad visited the classroom when it was empty and hurriedly took a photo of the sign. It also has text that reads like a mantra. The first line is, “Mrs. ___’s Jighaboos are at school today to achieve our 6th grade goals and prepare for 7th grade.”
“She makes them recite that out loud,” he said.
The district told FOX 4 the teacher did not know the term is commonly known as a derogatory reference for African Americans. A statement was issued with an apology.
“[We] would like to extend an apology for the inappropriate actions taken by one of our elementary teachers who failed to vet a class name. We take this situation seriously and the issue was immediately addressed with the principal and classroom teacher. Both the principal and the teacher have apologized to the parent reporting this concern,” H-E-B ISD said.

I honestly didn't know what the word meant, but I would never use a word I didn't understand w/o actually googling it. Especially as a teacher. Either she's ignorant, seriously fucked up racist or stupid, neither of which you want in a teacher.
No, because the teacher would be complaining that it's not FAAAIIIRR that she can't call her class that because Mrs. Jones lets her class eat cheese and CRACKERS and that's racist toward whites!
In all seriousness, this teacher should be fired. Issuing an apology isn't enough. Did she, herself, pick out this name? If so, she knew what she was doing. Did a kid pick it out? If so, how do you not do a cursory vetting of the word before you fucking LAMINATE IT AND PUT IT UP?
I did not know what the word meant either. I honestly always thought it was like a group of fun and sporty like clowns. I don't think I am ignorant or stupid, sometimes your mind doesn't always go to bad places. Words can mean one thing to a person for their entire lives and be entirely harmless and mean a truly offensive thing to another person. I am sure she will never think of using that word again. Unless she is a racist pig, then all bets are off. If she was unaware and thought it meant something else, time to teach, teach. The school should be vetting.

It's Tx I would be SHOCKED if she didn't have some idea what that word has been used for. At the very least you always Google a word you don't know before using it for something like that because otherwise you do dumb shit like this.

I have never heard of this word. THEREFORE-I WOULD NEVER HAVE NAMED MY CLASS THAT. I wouldn't just be like, "What should we call you? I will make up a word! It will be _____!" And not even think to google to make sure the word wasn't already used for some nefarious/urban dictionary purpose.
So, all the posters all "I have never heard of the word, so maybe she didn't know" I call shenanigans. She had to have at LEAST heard the word before to have used it. Therefore, she LIKELY knew the context, or SHOULD HAVE as a goddamn TEACHER. And even if she didn't have any contextual clues from when she heard it, YOU DON'T JUST USE A WORD WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT FUCKING MEANS! A TEACHER should know that.
So, nah. I am not buying the innocent "I didn't know" defense. She knew the word, obviously. Therefore, she either KNEW it was derogatory, or she is a dumb fuck who used it without knowing what it meant in a middle school classroom. At best, she is a dumbfuck.

Not exactly, but, come on. You make it sound like it's possible it was an innocent mistake and she needs to be taught. It wasn't.

Did she put the silent "H" in there for plausible deniability? I would be shocked that an educator does not know this word, except that I do not believe her for one minute that she had no idea what it meant. And the daily recitation makes my skin crawl.

This is some bullshit. In the age of Urban Dictionary, you fucking Google ANYTHING before you use it with your class, even if you think it's a nonsense word. Clearly she heard it somewhere from someone else.
But I'm not buying this wide-eyed "I didn't know" routine for a hot second.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

YUP.
I absolutely believe that there are people who have never heard this word.
BUT THOSE PEOPLE DO NOT CHOOSE IT TO BE A CLASS NAME. NOPE. DOES NOT HAPPEN. As 1234FIF! said, this bitch tried it.
