I had a friend who tried to name her car that when we were first out of college, 20ish years ago. She grew up in Ireland, and genuinely had no idea it wasn't just a nonsense word for people acting foolish. (I know - I have no idea what kind of people she hung out with in college.) When I told her what it actually meant, she was HORRIFIED. Thankfully, she had driven it off the lot and to her sister's house, where we all were, so I was able to stop her from announcing it to more than just us. Or, you know, fucking LAMINATING IT.
But again, 20ish years ago. Not in a freaking elementary school in 2016. Jesus christ, people. Five seconds on the damn internet is all it takes to not show your ass to the world.
Words can mean one thing to a person for their entire lives and be entirely harmless and mean a truly offensive thing to another person. I am sure she will never think of using that word again. Unless she is a racist pig, then all bets are off.If she was unaware and thought it meant something else, time to teach, teach.
Not exactly, but, come on. You make it sound like it's possible it was an innocent mistake and she needs to be taught. It wasn't.
OH COME ON, if you are going to quote me, get the entire text. Don't bold, un-bold, then bold again to your liking, that's BS. UNLESS SHE IS A RACIST PIG THEN ALL BETS ARE OFF is what I said also.
I am not a teacher, I never once said I never heard the word before, I said I heard and I thought it meant something else than what it means apparently.
I also said I have never used the word either. If have learned something new here today, like the real meaning of this word, then why can't I extend that out to someone else?
I don't know this woman, I don't know the whole story. I can only tell you what I thought it was and if I thought it was that, there's a possibility someone else did too.
this is not like a teacher acquaintance of mine who said something to her class about her plans to netflix and chill over a holiday weekend. (and then was totally confused when they were all, 'OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!' and cracked up laughing)
That is an innocent mistake from somebody who didn't know some lingo.

I'm often appalled at the quality of some teachers in this country. I know some are just not that bright. It's too bad some keep showing themselves to be racist too.

No, just no. Even if she was that dumb (given where this school is I'd be shocked if she truly didn't know) no teacher worth anything uses a word to name their team that they don't know the meaning of ESPECIALLY 6th grade where titters are common over dumb stuff. You google that stuff to make sure it's not something you don't want it to be.
How on earth do you hear that term and not know what it means? And if you heard it and knew it was a thing, as opposed to a made up word, wouldn't you google it to find out what it means? I mean, this is ignorant as fuck.
Like I said, I am not a teacher, I do not live in Texas. I have never used that word, however, I thought it meant something different. If my child came home and told me their class name was that, I guess I'd be the dumbass parent thinking I have to go out and buy all this clown stuff. My mind would not go there, it would have no reason to. Why? Because I thought they were fucking clowns and I guess b/c I don't live in texas and I am not a teacher. Teacher's should know better and should be up on jargon which is why I said time to teach the teacher. I also said if she is a racist pig, all bets are off and she needs to go. I gave her the benefit of the doubt b/c I didn't know what the word meant.
This is bullshit. If she is from or lives in Texas she knows what this word means. I'm so sick of these assholes trying to pull this innocent act when they're called out on their bullshittery.

I've never heard that word before but a quick Google search revealed that it is a racist and inappropriate name for a classroom. I question whether she should be teaching at all if she has such poor judgement to use words she doesn't know (or perhaps she did know?!)
In all seriousness, this teacher should be fired. Issuing an apology isn't enough. Did she, herself, pick out this name? If so, she knew what she was doing. Did a kid pick it out? If so, how do you not do a cursory vetting of the word before you fucking LAMINATE IT AND PUT IT UP?

How do you have names like "Dream Team" and then randomly make up a word for another group of students? And just happen to make up a word that also happens to be a derogatory term towards so many people? Coincidence my ass.

She didn't make up the word. It is a well known racist term and she knew exactly what it meant.
And an apology isn't enough, they need to fire her ass.

I know that. I'm explaining why I found fault in the "but she didn't know!!!!" argument.

It's like that stupid fucking reporter who used the same word to describe hip hop music and then tried to act like she just made up the word and it wasn't racist as shit.
A bunch of people tried to say that she legitimately didn't know what it meant.
Is this a thing in Texas or something? Am I missing something?
Are there regional racist slurs that go on?
It's not regional. It's used many places.
It is not a word you can stumble across and use thinking it means happy or positive things. It's absolutely a disgusting, hate filled word.
I still haven't been able to look it up bc I am at work. I don't think I will look it up, I just know (now) that it's bad and not to use it. Honestly I thought it had to do with clowns, never had a reason to look it up or even think it was a slur.
FTR, I am not saying she didn't know, I am saying I didn't know. Me. I have just associated that word with clowns, never a slur.

Why would you automatically go there? What about this teacher makes you think she deserves the benefit of the doubt?
White people are ALWAYS GETTING THE BENFEFIT OF THE DOUBT and that's why we are incapable of having useful conversations about race in this country. After the Sands posts and the MMM idiocy yesterday, I have exactly zero fucking patience for this benefit of the doubt bullshit. DO BETTER, PEOPLE.

I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I don't reserve that only for my white friends.

No.
Check your privilege on this.
If this was a male teacher who called a group of female students "the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Skanks," and then tried to pretend he thought skanks was another word for skunks, how would you react? Would you give him the benefit of the doubt? Or would you be rightfully outraged?

You're assuming I'm white. Try again.
Which one do you want me to check? My DR father? My PR mother?

Not regional but common enough in The south (including Texas) that you don't live in this region and not know that that word is racist and inappropriate. There is no way you as an adult of her age and not have heard it used by some racist in a context that makes it VERY clear that it is a slur.

I have never heard that word before and I used to teach at a school (in FL) with 90% minority students.
It isn't clear from the article, did the KIDS get to do the usual suggest 4-5 things, vote on one that is popular, thing? Or did the teacher come up with it? Any time I have come up with team names in my classroom, the kids have done the suggesting (THIS IS NO WAY MEANS THAT THE TEACHER SHOULDN'T LOOK INTO IT) (ETA: IF the teacher is the one who suggested the word in the first place, by all means, burn it down)
I am paranoid as eff and always assume something is either sexual or racially based and look stuff up first. I can see teachers at my school using that and gleefully going about their day having no clue thinking it is just a funny word.
In absolutely no way should this be allowed to pass or stand, and the teacher should be reprimanded, but hopefully other teachers will see this and know to do better (which should have been done in the first place).
(I am the paranoid one who emailed the teacher in my district who did a Kindergarten program called SNAFU in Santa's Workshop. Apparently, she had no idea what SNAFU stood for and never looked it up, and I was the ONLY person to mention it to her.)
*raises hand* I'm from Texas and didn't know what it meant. My first thought was, "It sounds kinda like that Jay Z song. Does she just not know the lyrics?" But also – GOOGLE EVERYTHING, stupid person.
My second thought was, "Ah, H-E-B. Where we played a football game in college for our Dallas alums because your stadium was INSANELY HUGE. I am not surprised about your lack of racial sensitivity."
