Since we have good discussion tonight....what does the dnc really offer for minorities and immigrants? Is it more the anti-r aspect? Racist factions in GOP? Or, are there actually plans for all (ie solvent social programs)
For me it's the social aspect. I'm solidly pro-choice, pro-gay marriage. I don't feel the same type of inclusion from the GOP. It's very hard to feel like the party has your back when you hear about getting free stuff, or that affirmative action is all about quotas (which always makes me feel as if I'm a dayum charity case and not that I actually had the same qualifications as everyone else).
Also, I don't feel like dismantling social programs is the best answer. Not everyone is astute when it comes to financial planning. So, when you talk about giving vouchers to people for Medicare, or privatizing social security, I cringe. Because some poor, unsuspecting person will be taken advantage of and there will be no remedy for that happening except - oh you should have been smarter.
Okay, but what are the Dems really doing about these? Just being pro-abortion/choice and, just now, pro-gay marriage is understandable, but isnt that universal and not for one ethnicity?

It the support of those laws. It's not the Dems running around craft personhood legislation. They aren't the party decimating funding to clinics that perform abortions (which is what happened in my city and made me pissed that I voted for our Republican mayor who I felt was more moderate). Dems also tend to push legislation like Title 1 that places more funding in inner city school systems.
Also, nothing can diminish the value of people who feel as if they are being heard. If you felt your husband deliberately ignored your feelings, you'd be upset. If he did it all the time and then made derogatory statements about you, you'd start calling that emotional abuse. A lot of people feel the same way about the GOP, the constant put downs and slights don't make me feel warm and fuzzy. Seriously, the GOP needs to address that.
Tef I am confused by your question when you mention ethnicity.
My original question asked what is the draw for minorities and/or immigrants (pro-choice and pro-gay marriage are universal issues so it was just a clarifying question...my focus was more on what is the DNC doing about other areas to keep programs sustainable and effective, like SS, as was mentioned).
Tef I am confused by your question when you mention ethnicity.
Never mind...once again Nitaw said it best. For me, I do not feel like I fit in the GOP because of my social views and where I live in Texas, I am not evangelical.
I don't know if this applies in the US but are minorities more visible within the party ranks of the Dems as opposed to the Republicans? Are there more minorities running for seats? I think that plays a role in how people feel included/supported within a party.
And you know what else, I think my comment about how minorities feel finally explains to me why white folks who I know benefit from things like the ACA or free lunch programs vote GOP. They don't feel like those slights are aimed at them. Lazy, trifling welfare queens are poor black kids. Not poor white kids.

How is the DNC effective in the "warm and fuzzy" feeling? I ask as I am in a very, very blue state and while I vote D for a number of posts, I dont feel welcomed at all. It is assumed I am a happy D because I am in education when this is far from the case. I have a LOT of issues in my state with how they support social programs (especially education and the criminal system) so I am curious.

Yes. Locally, there are several Dem elected officials. Same thing at the state and national levels.

I think there are more running, but when they speak on stage at the convention, they are solely seen as tokens. That makes me do this then
eta: I am referring to Rs running. A Dem running that is a minority is seen as wonderful and glorious (see Dem convention). I am glad to see it from both and just see it as good or progress for the R party, but not more than that.
The DNC may not be doing as much as it could, but at least it is not openly hostile to women, minorities, and gay people. People at the RNC called CNN's black camerawoman a MONKEY. Not people at a tea party rally, people who managed to get into the convention. That is really not attractive.
I also don't see how an educated, intelligent person can conclude the republican's economic policies work - unless most of your income comes from investments or you are a bank or corporation (in which case the economics work perfectly). You don't balance a budget by bringing in less revenue. That has never been a solid economic plan.

Honestly, that's an issue with your local Dem party. I am constantly updated with the Shelby Democratic Party. When I go to local events, party officials engage in real conversations. Although I'm not in Cohen's district, if I see him out or at an event, he is cordial, goes over local issues with me, etc. Now, maybe I don't know where Marsha Blackburn is, but I don't ever hear about local events from her. If I'm in her district, I at least expect a mailer about a town hall or something. Nope. Nada. Nothng. I get more correspondence from Lamar Alexander than Blackburn.
THe issue with taxes is that raising them on people at $250/200/150k (whatever the plan du jour is now) is not the best issue. These are not the 1%. They are upper middle class (or upper class, but that title doesn't fit) based on income. I am fine with corporations paying their share, even if this means me losing my fiscal conservative card, and reevaluating our ancient tax code. I am not fine with picking a, seemingly, arbitrary number to raise taxes on.

Are you a one party state? I dont pay much attention to states outside of a few so I apologize for not knowing. I actually think this is the big problem. The AlJazeera story highlighted all that is wrong with a one party state, imo, and the Ravens crap from a Dem in our state highlights why I don't get the warm that some do from Dems elsewhere. And, to be fair, I dont from the Rs either, but I am a registered Dem so I dont expect it here.

really? we're going to now label the RNC based on what one idiot said to someone?? that's just as bigoted as the person calling someone a monkey.
Especially when bill clinton said Obama would have been carrying his bags a few years back... but that gets a pass.
Im going to start a thread on this as I just heard of a new program that they are implementing to pay teachers more for results. Good in theory, not so sure in practice (cheating, etc).

Neither is appropriate and this RNC attendee was removed post haste. I am very happy for that action.

yeah- that's a whole other issue, and I agree re: theory/practice.
Don't even get me started with new Orleans public schools... mostly a black/dem local govn't in charge there... some of the shittiest schools in the nation --- how are they helping the minorities? And BUSH hated black people b/c of Katrina... yet their own black mayor who should have done more from the get go?
Tef - statewide we're pretty much controlled by Republicans. Governor and both houses of the General Assembly. Shelby County is heavily Dem, BUT, both the GOP and Dem local parties are very, very active. Like so active that I know the former Shelby Republican Party Chairman by name and face. Both local parties do actively court citizen participation. That could be why I do feel more connected given our local climate.
Oh and we weren't always a one state party. The GOP won control of the State House 2 years ago. And that's part of the reason we're in the middle of this school merger nonsense.

I am not labeling a party based on it, I'm just saying, if I were a person of color, I would be less attracted to the convention where I might get peanuts thrown at me. Or if I were gay, I might be less attracted to the party that wanted to prevent me from being married. Just as as a woman, I am less attracted to the party that wanted to take away my right to choose. It is a pretty simple analysis. People ordinarily choose, or should choose, the course that is in their best interest.
And no, Clinton does not get a pass at all but there is more ambiguity in what he said (since being a bag carrier is also a common euphamism for youth) than the monkey comment.

Ok. Time-Out. I don't know who actually runs the New Orleans School District, but typically, school districts have separate boards who create the policies for the school district. Frankly, it annoys me when local elected officials run on education platforms because, they don't normally have a lot to do except provide additional funding. So, it's not really the Mayor the beef is with. It's the superintendent and the school board who create the achievement metrics for a district.
Considering that you are a teacher, I'd imagine you know this already.
Is the city part of the county and not its own county? I am reading on it and it seems tht is the issue (a law from 1869), but may be off. And, maybe I need to go to a new thread with this if too much

I don't know much about it in NOLA, but our state superintendent is chosen by a board, not the governor. But, sure as heck if our current gov didnt try to change the law so he could appoint a new one (a puppet was his hope, imo). Maybe that is what she is stating...separate, but politicking interferes?
Maybe for you but I when I hear that I think of stepinfetchit. yassir massa clinton, ise be real quickfooted massa clinton.
Me too. When I read this I was all :-| I had the same reaction to Biden on how Obama speaks (or anyone who says Obama is well spoken. It is just an odd thing to say about a seasoned adult/professional).

Is this directed to me?
If yes, here's the answer. The city of Memphis lies within Shelby County. Memphis is NOT its own county. We went thru a city-county consolidation merger effort a couple of years ago that was not successful. Boo.
yeah- that's a whole other issue, and I agree re: theory/practice.

i speak of the mayor more re: Katrina clusterfuck. And the schools as a whole are pretty much run by blacks as well. I won't even get into the issues with the union there.... also black run, but not helping teachers much at all (other than some liability insurance)... just keeping those in power in power was their main agenda. Not the kids.
