Is the city part of the county and not its own county? I am reading on it and it seems tht is the issue (a law from 1869), but may be off. And, maybe I need to go to a new thread with this if too much
Is this directed to me?
If yes, here's the answer. The city of Memphis lies within Shelby County. Memphis is NOT its own county. We went thru a city-county consolidation merger effort a couple of years ago that was not successful. Boo.
Weird. Interesting with the merger and I will have to read more.
Ok. Time-Out. I don't know who actually runs the New Orleans School District, but typically, school districts have separate boards who create the policies for the school district. Frankly, it annoys me when local elected officials run on education platforms because, they don't normally have a lot to do except provide additional funding. So, it's not really the Mayor the beef is with. It's the superintendent and the school board who create the achievement metrics for a district.
Considering that you are a teacher, I'd imagine you know this already.
i speak of the mayor more re: Katrina clusterfuck. And the schools as a whole are pretty much run by blacks as well. I won't even get into the issues with the union there.... also black run, but not helping teachers much at all (other than some liability insurance)... just keeping those in power in power was their main agenda. Not the kids.
I think that is more an issue of party and power than race.
Maybe for you but I when I hear that I think of stepinfetchit. yassir massa clinton, ise be real quickfooted massa clinton.
Me too. When I read this I was all I had the same reaction to Biden on how Obama speaks (or anyone who says Obama is well spoken. It is just an odd thing to say about a seasoned adult/professional).
I almost forgot about that... see, the Dems say tons of crap that the average minority would go "HUH?" when they hear... yet the left media won't ever mention it... so they think "dems love minorities!"... but if they actually heard it all - would they actually believe that so much?? Maybe, maybe not... or would take it more on a person to person basis, and not a party that loves minorities.

Can't speak for NOLA but in D.C. the mayor controls the schools thanks to Adrian Fenty. The Board of Education is just an advisory group. Unless it whooshed by me while I was focused on all the court cases he's had to fight, I don't think Mayor Gray gave up that power.
What is the deal with Gray? How the hell did he get into office? Fenty that horrible (and I will duck if he was. I am too involved up here to worry about the other side of 295 ?

To be fair, these are just single people making these ass statements. If the GOP doesnt want to be pigeonholed because of the cray, the Dems should not be either

I don't know much about it in NOLA, but our state superintendent is chosen by a board, not the governor. But, sure as heck if our current gov didnt try to change the law so he could appoint a new one (a puppet was his hope, imo). Maybe that is what she is stating...separate, but politicking interferes?
A quick check shows that in Louisiana the school boards are elected. So, that most likely means that the former mayor (Nagen), probably doesn't have much jurisdiction to influence what the school board does. I'd need to do a little more research, but if it's anything like my state's setup, then the mayor doesn't have jack schitt to do with the district outside of giving money.
I am not labeling a party based on it, I'm just saying, if I were a person of color, I would be less attracted to the convention where I might get peanuts thrown at me. Or if I were gay, I might be less attracted to the party that wanted to prevent me from being married. Just as as a woman, I am less attracted to the party that wanted to take away my right to choose. It is a pretty simple analysis. People ordinarily choose, or should choose, the course that is in their best interest.
And no, Clinton does not get a pass at all but there is more ambiguity in what he said (since being a bag carrier is also a common euphamism for youth) than the monkey comment.
Maybe for you but I when I hear that I think of stepinfetchit. yassir massa clinton, ise be real quickfooted massa clinton.
It is ambiguous for me because junior lawyers (and I assume people in other professions as well) are called bag carriers. I think it is even in a movie, maybe the Firm?
Tef are you referencing the career ladder thing? They did something with that same name in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System way back in the day and my mama was the first group to go through it. She was/is not a fan.
Hmm, maybe. The can get to something like $135k in 5 years with good evaluations and results. Sorry, it was on NPR and I still need to read the article to grasp it all.

Thank you for being so kind, because I felt Militant NitawX rise up. You know this 'fro makes me think I'm Angela Davis Lite.

We think it's weird too. Why this city won't bother to consolidate is beyond me. Oh wait yes I do, class and race. Silly Nitaw living in utopia thinking a consolidated govt would help.
Ok, so with the merger, that is a whooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeee 'nother stroy in itself. I've done a good bit a research related to it all and I'm still trying to figure out some stuff on it. I swear, Memphis/TN politics could have it's own class like Chicago politics.

There are bigots and racists on both sides.
OK, we can use the NAACP report card instead. Same conclusion - every republican in congress gets an F.

Ummm no. Maybe, but Clinton is from fucking Arkansas. He knows good and dayum well that shit would be seen as bigoted. Period. This is probably why they aren't close anyway. Cuz' Imma tell you now, say some mess I see has bigoted, you will get cussed out. Ain't no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
I think part of what's challenging when talking about anything related to race/ethnicity is that it oversimplifies things because social class is a factor as well. So to say, "Well, the Ds offer minorities XYZ..." may not be accurate because a Hispanic woman who is a lawyer may have a very different experience than the Hispanic woman who waited on her at lunch. That's not to say that their race doesn't influence how either is treated, but it may influence the types of policies and programs they vote based upon and the things they're looking for in political candidates.

But many poor vote GOP and, based on posts here (board, not just thread) they want to cut programs that benefit them. I think that is where race can play a role. What drives people? Do you feel affected/singled out/etc?
But the person that threw peanuts WAS NOT in Congress. It was Joe Schmoe Public and that is what Kirkette was referring to, it seems.
OK, but what I am referring to is the original question - why minorities are attracted to the DNC. And my point is that, at nearly every level of the republican party, there is antagonism towards people of color. Encapsulate it as throwing peanuts, or broaden it to every republican member of congress getting an F from the NAACP, there is outright hostility for minorities throughout the party.

Tef - I mentioned it above, I really think poor whites don't see themselves in the same way that poor blacks are seen. The welfare queen myth = blak woman, 5 kids, ghetto fab with skittles and a flat screen tv. It's easy to separate yourself when you're not the group being demonized.

Right, I was referring to your post. My questions were rhetorical in terms of why I was looking at race and immigration as opposed to socio-economic factors.

Yeah, don't assume that cause I don't know anything about bag carriers. I do know something about Pullman Porters and bellhops. I am sure Clinton didn't mean it in the way I think of it, but he likely should have rethought that statement because I am betting more people had stepinfetchit in mind than some legal eagle bag carrier.
I guess none of us know what he meant. I view it one way because it has a very specific meaning in the legal profession, and Clinton is a lawyer, and BO is a lawyer, and so that's how I interpret it. But I can see how people could view it differently, and regardless, he should have chosen his words with more care.
The fact that Brown (voting with NAACP 40% of time), Snow and Collins (both 33%) and STILL getting Fs makes me go Huh? What is teh criteria? Is it more that they are Rs than other areas? I saw this on NAACP website: Issues ranged from education to labor, economic development to health care, and collective bargaining to criminal justice and voting rights initiatives. but I am still curious how members with high "voting with" still got Fs?

I am curious too. In school, you get an F if you score below 60%, right? Maybe that's the standard the NAACP applies.

Thanks, tef. Elle, if I don't share the views of the NAACP, why would I be concerned about the fact that they gave Republicans in Congress an F? There are also no words for the quote at the bottom of the article, "His father said a Black voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders".
How lovely.
You might not. But if the question is why people of color prefer the DNC, one plausible reason is the assessment on many, many levels that the GOP is hostile to people of color.
What would you consider a reliable watchdog entity on race issues? Does that entity rank the GOP higher than the DNC?
But the person that threw peanuts WAS NOT in Congress. It was Joe Schmoe Public and that is what Kirkette was referring to, it seems.
No, but he was there representing other GOP members - as a delegate who was there to vote on behalf of his state's party's constituents. Which means you need to keep that in mind. If someone is going to get called out for doing dumb shit while wearing their college sports uniform and therefore representing their school, you'd better believe a convention delegate is seen as representing their party. (This is a far cry from saying all Republicans are racist. More like "you need to do better vetting the people you want representing you.")
Yeah, me neither. I don't understand how he got to be the majority leader.
Because the Dems don't have a backbone and thought that moderate/conservative Reid would be a good "compromise" and the Republicans might be satisfied with his appointment. Which is obviously not true. Which, IMO, means that if you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, you should just go all the way and pick Barbara Boxer.
